Is threatening illegal immigrants going to stop them coming?

Channel migrants face lifetime ban on returning to UK www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64848101

I read this with horror. I know we are a tiny island with limited resources but this legislation seems callous and cruel. These people are risking their very existence getting on these small boats and to then be locked up and shipped off again to who knows where. Plus the cost to us as tax payers. AIBU to suggest that I don't have a solution but this one seems extreme.

Oh, is the Labour shadow cabinet posting policy on this thread?

I would like to see Yvette Cooper showing up here.

Florenz · 07/03/2023 18:37

We are a small island, already vastly overpopulated. The ideal population of Great Britain is about 3 million people and we currently have almost 100 million people living here. Something needed to be done.

I, too, like to pull numbers out of my ass.

Blossomtoes · 07/03/2023 18:34

But you just said it doesn’t 🤷‍♀️ Make up your mind.

Let’s call it an unofficial ‘understanding’.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

The next election is going to be won or lost on the tens of thousands arriving this summer and next on boats, the drownings and the growing public awareness of the sheer numbers going through our courts of drug dealers, traffickers, rapists, low level crime to gangs of war. The average person isn’t aware yet of what is sitting in our systems currently. Blissful ignorance.

Springchicken75 · 07/03/2023 18:23

Oh it does exist trust me. Labour know exactly what they will do with immigration.

You can hear the policy ringing through this thread loud and clear. They are certainly not going to own it at this delicate stage. The polls would plummet overnight if they did.

You do know that the Tory policy is related to illegal channel crossings and not wider immigration policy as a whole right?

Net migration under your beloved government hit an all time high last year at +504,000. Since only 45k entered illegal the "problem" with legal migration appears to be at least 11 x worse. So why such a hyper focus on such a small part of the problem? I wonder.....

What do you suggest then? Do a Merkel and welcome them all in...soon have millions trying like she did

Don't forget, last year we allowed in 1 Million migrants. That is totally unsustainable. No wonder the NHS and other public services are breaking due to years and years of excessive immigration

Best do you not want to stop boats and trafficking? Did you see what happened off the coast of Italy. Boat overloaded and children thrown overboard. The tactics are extreme and dangerous.

I’m fine with using work visas and matching skills we need, I’m also ok with some safe routes. But even with that the trafficking industry, which is growing massively, isn’t good and can be linked to further crime.

Would you like boats to keep crossing?

Notonthestairs · 07/03/2023 18:47

Id like to the Government assessment of how much this policy will cost (detention, processing and deportation) when they anticipate the policy will actually happen and the rate at which they believe it will stop the boats.

I'd also love to explain why they aren't prosecuting the gangs that are based in this country but I suppose that is too much to ask.

At the moment it's all pie in the sky Tory electioneering and nothing more.

What we need is a really serious plague to get us back to population levels of the 1500s. Or maybe a mushroom apocalypse would do it.

lazycats · 07/03/2023 18:55

“Stop the boats” has clearly been focused-grouped to within an inch of its life. A classic three-word slogan used 9 times in the press release and even stuck on the podium. A great strategy - at least up until the point the boats are still there in a few months.

Yes, it hit an all time high because we took in so many afghans and Ukrainians would you rather we left them there to rot?

I would also argue that the predicted numbers for this summer means it most definitely isn’t ‘small’ and it’s the danger they are exposed to. It’s far from a small problem! You have no grasp at all have you? Pitiful.

MarshaBradyo · 07/03/2023 19:02

It’s hard to know what Labour posters are arguing for

Is it to have boats keep crossing? Is that what you’re hoping is in Labour manifesto

Why do you keep assuming we are all Labour voters?

Most parties oppose this bill

Whoever your party is what would you like? Boats to keep crossing or no

Moonicorn · 07/03/2023 19:09

Actually I would go as far as to say people in favour of letting boat refugees stay are unwitting male rights activities. Men take over the country, the other men flee. The Afghan women are stuck with not a soul to look out for them, and the women in the U.K. are now expected to absorb a large number of men who come from a culture that seems women as lesser humans. So women getting shafted at both ends to make sure the men are okay 🤷🏼‍♀️ twas ever thus wasn’t it?

Of course I want small boat crossing to stop, but I want safe, easy to access, efficient and humane alternatives in place first.

Failure to do that will do absolutely nothing to stop the problem, no matter how many boats you intercept or people you send back. All that will do is drive people to take bigger risks and force them deeper into the black market.

It's really basic stuff that any semi-compotent government should know.

You will likely need both as safe routes won’t provide enough places unless unlimited, so the market will still exist

Hold on.. are you now saying you are all for helping ensure asylum seekers are provided with safe routes into this country and provided with all they need to rebuild there lives?? That's great! Not sure why you've spent the last 38 pages arguing against that.....

.....Oh wait, I remember now, you're under the impression that everyone coming across on those boats are economic migrants, rapists, murderers and drug dealers, despite over 70% of them having their application granted once they're actually assessed.

I would also argue that the predicted numbers for this summer means it most definitely isn’t ‘small’ and it’s the danger they are exposed to. It’s far from a small problem! You have no grasp at all have you? Pitiful.

No grasp of what? Immigration issues? Reality? Whatever it is I've got a significantly firmer grasp on it than you do.
