To think if you work with people or children you should not be rude?

Why are some people rude in the work place? It’s annoying me!

I visit schools each week to work with children and often have to go in classes to get specific children. There’s a particular person who is always very abrupt and rude to me. She talks to me like I’m one of her yr 2’s. Talking more slowly, emphasising words as if I’m stupid. She never smiles and acts like I am an annoying inconvenience because I’m interrupting her! She also tries to manage when I should visit- I’m more than flexible by the way and totally get some times are not convenient (eg I avoid core subjects sessions) but it’s yr 2 who are doing painting mainly when I’m there.

I spoke to the Head and it turns out this person is not even in a teacher (I had assumed she was the teacher as she’s always quick to respond when I go into the class) she’s the TA for Gods sake! Head then laughed and said she thinks she’s actually in charge and runs the school and rolled her eyes 😂 and offered to have a word with her. (I realise this is not personal and she likes no one)

so if you don’t like people / children why would you work in this environment? I don’t get it.

For somebody who claims to be way "more qualified" than a play therapist you don't seem to understand much about schools and the people who might work in them. I started my working life as a hospital play therapist in the 90s and now work as a counsellor in a specialist education setting. I've Post-grad qualifications coming out of my arsehole (including my gold-plated PGCE) and am still constantly training. You'd still look down on me I expect because I might be on the floor playing with LEGO when you enter the classroom.

I understand just fine

So other than being told you are right what else do you accept people to say that would meet your standards?

StopInvolvingMe · 02/03/2023 20:14

MichelleScarn · 02/03/2023 19:59

The tone was absolutely not derogatory towards Play Therapists a highly educated and skilled profession. Tone was more towards your attitude!

Hi Michelle it’s been a while hasn’t it? Aren’t you bored yet?

I think the OP is saying that Parents don't pay for Salt but they pay for her.

Of course she is wrong, DS had private SALT.

Depends where you live

she’s the TA for Gods sake!
I find this rude, do you think a TA is a lesser being? Are the teacher/TA aware of when you're going to be going into their classroom or does being flexible mean you're just pitching up?

Well the fact that this person is a TA wouldn't have been brought up if the TA wasn't rude!

There is no excuse for rudeness in any job. I'll tell you the worst offenders - school secretaries.

Icedlatteplease · 02/03/2023 20:16

You do realise any humour was just killed stone deaf by the rudeness of "She is white but on the portly side"

Pomposity you can laugh at... but that was just about every kind of rude going.

All jokes aside I really think you could do with taking a long hard look at your ideas of politeness.

The fact you could even consider saying that means you are way off base

StopInvolvingMe · 02/03/2023 20:16

Dominoeffecter · 02/03/2023 19:58

Why is portly relevant?

It’s not, just responded in the same tone as the post it related to

It is relevant that TA was brought up as she’s not the decision maker

OP confirmed they work directly for the parents.

They liase with the head

I do this too. At two schools I'm employed by the school, and at two others I'm paid by the parents, but it is the school that offers the facility for the lessons, and advertises the fact in their prospectus. Music teachers don't just turn up and say 'can I teach here?'

Cocobutt · 02/03/2023 20:21

I was shocked she was a TA because she commandeered the role of decision maker, not because she’s a lesser person?!

I don’t understand why you can’t understand that a TA can be a decision maker.

My TAs have just as much say as I do.
I just tend to make most of the decisions because it’s part of my job role but there are plenty of time when they make the decisions.

You’ve been to this school several times and you say she’s always like it and she’s always the decision maker - therefore she IS the decision maker.
If the teacher doesn’t tell you when to visit etc but the TA does then it’s obviously the thing that she is in charge of.

I don’t think anyone should be rude, regardless of where they work.

However, the fact that you think the TA should not be making any of the decisions regarding you, makes me think that you are the one that’s rude to her and she’s just giving it back.

It was derogatory because it implied that TA’s should somehow be impressed with ‘ooh’s and ah’s’ on entering the room which suggests play therapists have a sense of self importance

A TA may well make lots of decisions within their classroom or school, but not where I am concerned. My terms of work are agreed with SLT.

I have been nothing but polite hence why I spoke to the HT

Ooooh get you all snooty- not condescending at all 🤣

No another misjudgement of tone.

DD used the subsidised lessons from the music service when she was in primary. She cut short her lessons ultimately, but it was my regret that I knew I wasn't going to be able to support her continuing because I'd seen the damage regular missed learning from music lesson. There was no way I could have afforded any lessons without the music services.

It was a very genuine heartfelt regret.

But it’s the TA and teacher in the classroom and they’re the ones that make the decisions when the best time for you to come etc.

If the teacher isn’t making these decisions and it’s the TA every time and the teacher stays quiet then it’s obvious that she is in charge of this area.
