To think if you work with people or children you should not be rude?

Why are some people rude in the work place? It’s annoying me!

I visit schools each week to work with children and often have to go in classes to get specific children. There’s a particular person who is always very abrupt and rude to me. She talks to me like I’m one of her yr 2’s. Talking more slowly, emphasising words as if I’m stupid. She never smiles and acts like I am an annoying inconvenience because I’m interrupting her! She also tries to manage when I should visit- I’m more than flexible by the way and totally get some times are not convenient (eg I avoid core subjects sessions) but it’s yr 2 who are doing painting mainly when I’m there.

I spoke to the Head and it turns out this person is not even in a teacher (I had assumed she was the teacher as she’s always quick to respond when I go into the class) she’s the TA for Gods sake! Head then laughed and said she thinks she’s actually in charge and runs the school and rolled her eyes 😂 and offered to have a word with her. (I realise this is not personal and she likes no one)

so if you don’t like people / children why would you work in this environment? I don’t get it.

It’s totally unprofessional

I don’t work for CAHMS. This statement is far reaching and vacuous. As far as I’m aware CAHMS is a free service to parents- not sure they pay for it

You're paid for by the parents??? Begs the question why your service has to happen in school, in school hours.

That opens the field somewhat, although doesn't rule out private counselling or psychiatry...

Oh go on OP give us a laugh and tell us what you do.

So parents pay for your service?

Gazelda · 02/03/2023 19:11

Would you think it professional of a work colleague talking with another person in a negative way about you and rolling their eyes in reference to you behind your back?

Icedlatteplease · 02/03/2023 19:11

StopInvolvingMe · 02/03/2023 19:07

I think that would have been rude if said in a communal area where others can hear, but not behind closed doors

Its rude anywhere.

Of course - I wrote in a previous post that I’m paid by parents and school facilitates my visits

You would never think they did. You can't even see how unreasonable and patronising you are being on this thread.

It’s not rude, it’s a fact, the teacher is the decision maker not the TA

It sounds rude and dismissive, maybe it’s your attitude rubbing people up the wrong way.

CandyLeBonBon · 02/03/2023 19:15

I'm guessing a music tutor or similar. That's the only thing I can think of where parents pay and the kids go out of class to have their weekly lesson.

Either way op you're posts are pretty abrasive. And your attitude towards TAs and Play therapists is very dismissive.

The TA may have been rude. Maybe she doesn't like you. If you're as abrasive in real life as you are on here I can understand it.

I’ve seen headteachers roll their eyes behind closed doors about the people parents are paying for and expect the school to facilitate visits for. That’s unprofessional too…

Fairislefandango · 02/03/2023 19:16

I thought YWNBU until I saw the way you've spoken to people on this thread and now I think it's you not her.

^This. You sound rude. You were rude about TAs. You have been rude to people on the thread. You clearly think it's ok for the Head to speak to her staff in a rude way.

It's hard to tell if the TA was rude or not. She may have just been in 'addressing children' mode. Lots of teachers and TAs have a different way of talking when they are talking in front of kids, especially primary age children, even when they are talking to an adult. I doubt she was trying to be rude.

This is why I hate Mumsnet!

I considered music tutor too, but would have to be a Masters or Doctoral level to be so much more qualified than a lowly Play Therapist with only an under and post grad?

Walkaround · 02/03/2023 19:19

Still, if the OP does not think a headteacher unprofessional to laugh at their own staff behind their backs in work time with other professionals, and does not think it unprofessional if a headteacher laughs about visiting paid professionals to their own staff, then that’s all fine and dandy and not remotely unprofessional, isn’t it?

Actually you said work directly for the parents not that you were paid for by them

My role is to work directly for parents with their child. This involves liaising with a head teacher who will provide the school to facilitate my visits.

Surely not a music teacher?

Work ‘for’ generally means paid by don’t you think?

That’s fine you’re entitled to your opinion. Not sure why you think the head was rude or disparaging- I clearly wasn’t the first person to have spoken to her about this member of staff hence the reaction I got, it is what it is. She handled it very well and offered to speak to the member of staff on my behalf.

The head laughed at a complaint about a staff member and told you that the person thinks they run the place. That is not the behaviour of a professional manager. If the head has already been told this about the TA by other people it should have been addressed by now. You incorrectly think it was dealt with well because you were agreed with.
