To think if you work with people or children you should not be rude?

Why are some people rude in the work place? It’s annoying me!

I visit schools each week to work with children and often have to go in classes to get specific children. There’s a particular person who is always very abrupt and rude to me. She talks to me like I’m one of her yr 2’s. Talking more slowly, emphasising words as if I’m stupid. She never smiles and acts like I am an annoying inconvenience because I’m interrupting her! She also tries to manage when I should visit- I’m more than flexible by the way and totally get some times are not convenient (eg I avoid core subjects sessions) but it’s yr 2 who are doing painting mainly when I’m there.

I spoke to the Head and it turns out this person is not even in a teacher (I had assumed she was the teacher as she’s always quick to respond when I go into the class) she’s the TA for Gods sake! Head then laughed and said she thinks she’s actually in charge and runs the school and rolled her eyes 😂 and offered to have a word with her. (I realise this is not personal and she likes no one)

so if you don’t like people / children why would you work in this environment? I don’t get it.

You'd fucking hope not with that kind of nasty attitude wouldn't you?

the only nasty attitude was the TA

That's just how you think you appear. It doesn't mean that's how other people see you. I'll bet you don't think you're coming across sneery and dripping with contempt on here, but you are. Quite a number of people see it.

That’s not the case but thank you for your valuable input

@StopInvolvingMe - the TA is a work colleague. There is a problem when you view her as an inferior. Where is the teacher in all this, if you think it beneath yourself to have to talk to the TA? Is she cowering in a corner because she’s scared of the other adult in the room?

DoubleShotEspresso · 02/03/2023 18:30

You had me until I read "she's the TA for God's sake"

Maybe OP her rudeness stems from being treated by other professionals as "just a TA", maybe she's mega busy and overloaded /stressed/stepping for teachers and room changes at the drop of a hat. Maybe she's wondering if her life might improve if she took higher pay and less responsibility stacking shelves in Lidl?
Just a thought...

MelchiorsMistress · 02/03/2023 18:31

A TA running a lesson alone has as much authority as a teacher in that situation, and as much right to choose when their lesson is interrupted as a teacher has if you’re genuinely offering flexibility.

She shouldn’t be rude to you, but the fact that she was when she was doing something she is being significantly underpaid for doesn’t mean she’s in the wrong job.

Ha ha maybe you missed the bit where she clearly likes no one

I didnt she just might have disliked you more.

It’s not really a true reflection though as I’ve posted a few times and many of the same posters have posted several times so I think it’s more fair to say your point is not effective or neutral

Yanbu, used to work in education and I've often thought this about some of my colleagues. If you hate people/children so much why would you pick this industry?!

She wasn’t treated in any other way by me, maybe she’s been treated differently by others though. It wouldn’t surprise me

At yet the OP reminds me distinctly of my sons cahms consultant.....

He spent considerable amount of time explaining my sons condition to me, explaining why what I was saying was wrong and how he knew because he was the qualified one and therefore his (epically failing) treatment plan was correct. Except he hadn't read the letter on file from my sons far more qualified consultant that stated exactly what I said was correct.

He still to this day can't admit he was wrong. About everything

Well exactly- it’s like a vet who doesn’t like animals or being a HCP who doesn’t care about people or helping them.

I was asking where the teacher was. Ie is the teacher cowering in a corner? Or is the TA actually the one in charge of the classroom at the time? And yes you self-evidently view her as inferior, because you said she is “not even a teacher” and “she’s the TA for God’s sake!”

Doesn’t sound anything like this situation

As an aside, I'm a TA and while I love the kids, I can't say I'm a big fan of adults.Grin

My comment was reflecting decision making - it’s not a TA’s call to quiz my existence or why I’m there. Come to think of it I think the teacher was cowering a bit scared of her

Does it really matter? Seems that having an unfortunate manner is ok if you’re a TA according to some posts
