Roundabout with diagram , was I wrong?

I'm the red line, white van is blue line, he was behind me in my blind spot, yellow x is where I indicated to leave the roundabout. He blew me out of it.
This is the town I live in ( hopefully unrecognisable from the air 😀) But if I was wrong ( and I'm prepared to admit it if voting is unanimous ) Then I have been going around this roundabout incorrectly my whole adult life!

With regards to the diagram, I was coming down the road, so roundabout appears upside down. In hindsight should have put it in the other way. 2 lanes entering, 1 lane to exit. Considered adding arrows but fingers too pudgy. No attempt to mislead regarding layout of the road.
To the pp who asked, blew me out of it = leaned on the horn= beeped.
Roundabout is in Ireland, people blast horns and flashing lights all over the place. Sometimes just being friendly as passing someone they recognised. Pretty sure white van man was not a mate of mine 😄

Even if there are two lanes off sounds like OP drifted over to the left lane to exit not realising there was a van in the right hand lane.

Sorry van in the left hand lane

Does it?
possibly, but I don’t see anything that says so

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 28/02/2023 21:27

Oh for fuck sake.
Ok I have to apologise then if there is not two lanes coming off then you were wrong.

Ah sorry then if there’s one lane to exit you are incorrect.

where do you expect the left lane traffic to go?

ArcticSkewer · 28/02/2023 21:31

Oops, so if only one lane coming off ... was that why in the picture you have white van man driving into a bush??

I thought that was just a clumsy arrow on a dual carriage way

knittingaddict · 28/02/2023 21:33

There is no centre line on the exit road. I think the faint line people can see is uneven wear on the road. It is one lane coming off the roundabout. You can see the road markings elsewhere that indicate two lanes.

Thank you for confirming. That's how it looks in the photo - one lane exit.

SnackSizeRaisin · 28/02/2023 21:35

I would generally use the left lane for going straight over. However whichever lane you use, the rule for roundabouts (as with any other road situation in fact) is that you give priority to anyone already in the lane you are trying to enter. So if you are exiting the roundabout you must give priority to anyone to your left - even if they are driving all the way round the roundabout in the left lane, or using the "wrong" lane for their intended exit. Basically if you try to leave a roundabout and crash into someone who is staying on, it is your fault (unless it's one if those big roundabouts with lane markings that lead you into a specific exit...)

knittingaddict · 28/02/2023 21:36

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 28/02/2023 21:23

It's blatantly clear there are two lanes.
Wtf!look at every other exit they all have two.

Honestly, people really are taking the piss now!
Op still correct.

Well op has confirmed that you are wrong.

amusedbush · 28/02/2023 21:40

FurAndFeathers · 28/02/2023 21:12

If it was a single exit lane that would be correct, but it looks very clearly like a two lane carriageway and continues to be so. Looks like there’s a dotted white line between the lanes and it’s the same width as the clearly marked two lanes on the opposite carriageway

I bloody well knew it looked way too narrow to be a two lane carriageway! I'm glad to be vindicated by the OP confirming it was one lane Grin

knittingaddict · 28/02/2023 21:41

Just a minute, Ireland? So you are the person who posted that wind up roundabout thread a week or so ago? The one where you excited via the entrance to the roundabout and argued the toss about it?

ancientgran · 28/02/2023 21:41

Musicalmistress · 28/02/2023 19:41

My parents say the same!

Yes they did used to teach roundabout lanes differently. When I learned to drive (50 years ago) it was left for a left or straight on, right for straight on or right turn. If you were in the right land but wanted to go straight on you would change lanes after the left turn.

Youraccountisnolongervalid · 28/02/2023 21:41

FurAndFeathers · 28/02/2023 21:26

Does it?
possibly, but I don’t see anything that says so

OP wasn’t aware there are 2 lanes entering the roundabout until today, OP also says ‘I genuinely just didn't see him. He was quite a bit behind me, not sort of alongside me iykwim. I only became aware of him when he blew the horn and I craned my neck and saw him enter the lane behind me.’’

Also why would someone beep in this scenario unless they could see a vehicle in front cut them up?

GinBlossom94 · 28/02/2023 21:42

To me it looks like a 2 lane merge on exit and going purely by your lines you cut straight across the van instead of checking before merging

Well, she did cut him up - she’s confirmed it was a one lane exit

GinBlossom94 · 28/02/2023 21:44

BUT and I'm very tired - if op didn't think there were 2 exit lanes then yes, in the wrong lane (I hope that I'm making at least some sense)

Yes but even if there were 2 lanes off she is still cutting him up otherwise they would have both just exited the roundabout (assuming that’s where the van was going)

YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 28/02/2023 21:47

But the Highway Code doesn’t say left lane for straight on (just ‘the most appropriate lane’). And its diagram is 2 lanes to 2 lanes. Although I’m a left hander (as the right lane people here have the issue of getting in and I prefer an easy life) I was taught either lane for straight on (1990s).

I’m surprised it’s a test failure given it doesn’t appear to be in the Highway Code? You also don’t know it’s only 1 lane exit until you’re already committed!

also OP is in Ireland so the rules may be different to U.K.

No not me. I'm not arguing, I agreed on the first page I was in the wrong 🤷
I thought it was one lane one and one lane off, it's a roundabout in a shopping area, not main thoroughfare do not unusual to be single lane around here. Van entered roundabout after me, I didn't actually see him enter so not sure where, except he was behind me.
Anyway, I'll know for the future.

I’m learning here too OP! So it sounds like you can be in the right hand lane if there are 2 lanes coming off, but how do you know that when you enter the roundabout?

If in doubt or you don’t know, then it’s left lane for straight over
