Roundabout with diagram , was I wrong?

I'm the red line, white van is blue line, he was behind me in my blind spot, yellow x is where I indicated to leave the roundabout. He blew me out of it.
This is the town I live in ( hopefully unrecognisable from the air 😀) But if I was wrong ( and I'm prepared to admit it if voting is unanimous ) Then I have been going around this roundabout incorrectly my whole adult life!

you were correct

Blossom45 · 28/02/2023 21:02

I failed my first attempt driving test for doing exactly what you did, so you were in the wrong. Left hand lane for 1st and second exit, right hand for 3rd and beyond is what I was taught.

knittingaddict · 28/02/2023 21:02

Lots of us have said that they can see one lane coming off as the lines aren't clear in that section. The op hasn't once corrected that. I have my suspicions now.

The Highway Code:

“When taking any intermediate exit, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
select the appropriate lane on approach to the roundabout
you should not normally need to signal on approach
stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want.”

I always find it astonishing in threads like this how many folk are adamant about their (often incorrect) remembrance of the Highway Code - why not just look it up rather than drive according to your personal incorrect remembrances?

YouOKHun · 28/02/2023 20:49

That reminds me of my late father saying to me when I was learning to drive, “Always drive assuming everyone else is a homicidal maniac and you should be OK”!

My late dad used to say much the same, with different wording - "just assume every other driver is an even bigger idiot than you are ..." 😂

I hope you wear them when driving @Blablablanamechangagain Wink

Where would the fun be in that 🧐

Google isn’t the Highway Code and “generally speaking” isn’t a rule. Especially on two lane carriageways

Touché 👏🤣

I can't see a second lane where OP exited - the road narrows almost immediately so unless there are curved arrows on the road (which are too faded to see in that image) telling people to merge into one lane as soon as they come off the roundabout, it's a single lane road.

I was taught that the left lane is for left and straight on, and the right is for anything past that. Unless the exit has two lanes, in which case you can use the right lane if you are joining the right lane of your exit.

I have only ever seen a couple of people use the right lane to go straight over into a single lane exit and both times they nearly crashed into someone going straight over from the left lane. Emergency braking, horns blaring - the lot.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 28/02/2023 19:25

You were in the wrong. Left lane for left and straight across, right for anything beyond straight across.

Agree

BabyPapa · 28/02/2023 21:10

I always advise people hat to he Highway Code should be abided to unless local rules over rule and then common sense should be used.

Theres a lot of roundabouts on my test route that vary including one where the left lane is for 1st and 3rd exit only 😂

I nearly failed for hesitating on a roundabout, yet all the fools you see whizzing round them with no regard for other cars , presumably never failed their test for being too cautious . The test is a little ridiculous with some of its rules. Common sense and experience create safe drivers , not a one hour test . Obviously I understand it’s a necessary evil.

Plenanna · 28/02/2023 21:11

Surely the highway code doesn’t apply as this roundabout isn’t in the UK? You don’t go anti-clockwise around British roundabouts.

If it was a single exit lane that would be correct, but it looks very clearly like a two lane carriageway and continues to be so. Looks like there’s a dotted white line between the lanes and it’s the same width as the clearly marked two lanes on the opposite carriageway

I thought that too, but it's upside down, or rather the driver approaches from top towards bottom

She doesn’t go anti clockwise

MoreSleepPleasee · 28/02/2023 21:14

OP wtf that is clearly the wrong lane 🤣🤣👎

daffodilday · 28/02/2023 20:54

This . Who is that second lane for , if not for cars in the lane OP was in ? The Highway Code does not account for all Roundabouts. Drivers also have to apply common sense .

I agree

You're lucky, we have to cross one on the walk to and from school and the amount of people going straight over the roundabout but in the right hand lane and indicating right is unbelievable! I've just had to teach DDs to assume that everyone indicating right is an idiot and is actually going to go straight on so not to cross the road until it's totally clear.

WetLettuce2 · 28/02/2023 21:21

You were wrong sorry !

sexbolt · 28/02/2023 21:21

@Ridelikethewindypops I have some sympathy - the offset roundabout means that you probably go straight-over in the right hand lane when travelling from bottom to top, but you should be in the left hand lane when travelling bottom to top.
Had you been on a bicycle, I'm sure you would have joined and left the roundabout in the outside lane.

FurAndFeathers · 28/02/2023 21:22

“Do not turn right / 3rd exit from the left lane. A vehicle may be following the road ahead (2nd exit) from the right-hand lane which can cause a collision if you turn right (3rd exit) from the left-hand lane.”

It's blatantly clear there are two lanes.
Wtf!look at every other exit they all have two.

Honestly, people really are taking the piss now!
Op still correct.
