Roundabout with diagram , was I wrong?

I'm the red line, white van is blue line, he was behind me in my blind spot, yellow x is where I indicated to leave the roundabout. He blew me out of it.
This is the town I live in ( hopefully unrecognisable from the air 😀) But if I was wrong ( and I'm prepared to admit it if voting is unanimous ) Then I have been going around this roundabout incorrectly my whole adult life!

If there are two lanes entering and exiting you are fine to use either lane, but sticking to one lane obviously.

If there is only one lane on the exit you should be in the left hand lane.

Ffsmakeitstop · 28/02/2023 19:36

If the road you were turning into has two lanes then you were correct. If it's only got one then you were wrong sorry.

helpfulperson · 28/02/2023 19:37

It depends on the road markings. We have a similar roundabout where both lanes are marked straight ahead but only one on exit. You just need to be aware of other traffic.

And I'm fairly sure when I learnt to drive if no markings either lane was OK. Its surprising how much the highway code has changed over the years.

OhNoNotThatAgain · 28/02/2023 19:37

It appears as though the exit is a single lane and not a dual carriageway. So in that case you were in the wrong lane, sorry.

caveat: During periods of heavy traffic, local convention (and an absence of signage) might dictate that the left hand lane is occupied by a long queue of vehicles turning left, and people going straight on or turning right habitually use the right hand lane.

Here's the problem. Up until today, that roundabout only had one lane feeding onto it......
🫤
It didn't obviously. But I would have sworn in court it did....until I looked it up on Google earth.
Mea culpa. And also mea completely blind...

God that's even worse OP. Left lane is for left or straight on. Right lane is for right. Unless the writing on the floor says otherwise.

I was taught either lane for straight on.

Thing is, the van may not have been able to see your indicator if you were alongside.

You have to negotiate your way off.

I wasn't. Definitely left lane for left and straight on. Right lane for anything past that.

I learnt about 18 years ago.

OneTC · 28/02/2023 19:38

If there's no updated road markings since that picture then you were in the wrong lane.

There are many many roundabouts that don't follow the convention for straight over though, but they will be marked with instructions on the lane as you approach

Dinersaur · 28/02/2023 19:38

Looks to me like you could use either. I'd have been in the left though.

Ridelikethewindypops · 28/02/2023 19:40

I might have to change username after this, but just whilst I have you all here......

Which lane to get from A to B??( another local roundabout, I'm afraid I've been doing this one wrong too!!)

This as well. There are exceptions but are usually clearly marked.

Right hand lane

Personally I think you were in the wrong lane... however my parents are convinced they were taught that they could be in the lane you were in.

My parents say the same!

I would use the right lane.

OneTC · 28/02/2023 19:42

Actually on the second one in not sure. Are those bollards so it's only 1 lane?

If that's so then either

Cornelious2011 · 28/02/2023 19:43

Yes you were wrong.

AnonymousArabella · 28/02/2023 19:44

Right Lane but being aware there may be traffic in the left hand lane that have entered the roundabout from the entrance after A.

PonkyPonky · 28/02/2023 19:45

Your second picture would be right lane as the one you want is after the 12oclock point on a roundabout with more than 4 exits (general rule of thumb unless markings dictate otherwise). When there are 4 exits total then it’s left lane for left and straight over and right lane for turning right.

Brightshinylight · 28/02/2023 19:45

Inside lane to go ‘right’. Left lane to go left or straight on.

RedDay · 28/02/2023 19:45

I’m learning here too OP! So it sounds like you can be in the right hand lane if there are 2 lanes coming off, but how do you know that when you enter the roundabout?

zurala · 28/02/2023 19:47

I was taught you could be in either lane, though I would use the left lane, but you left it far too late to indicate and move over, and you really should have been aware of a van beside you.

GoodChat · 28/02/2023 19:47

Look out for signage and road markings. If you're not certain, use the obvious lane.

soleilblue · 28/02/2023 19:47

Right lane right only (unless marked otherwise)

That's why I would always use the left hand lane unless road markings indicated otherwise. Then you can't go wrong. Why take the risk?

NevieSticks · 28/02/2023 19:48

For the second one you use the right hand lane and after you have passed the last exit before yours you indicate left and start to move over according to the HC.

iloveyankeecandle · 28/02/2023 19:48

The big roundabouts like me allow for you to go straight over in the right hand lane. However, I make sure I'm right over the roundabout before signaling to move over to the left hand lane if that makes sense?
