I know it’s regional, but I can’t find a thread here, only a brief mention on the BBC and even the daily mail it is way down.

is this a bad or good sign?

@MarshaBradyo yeah, it's really rubbish for the kids. They are taking targeted action on schools within certain constituencies (Sturgeon, Swinney, Somerville and Greer). That's 9 days they've been in school over the last 4 weeks. Both sides need more pressure to get this resolved.

Another 3 days off school next week too in these constituencies.

The SNP power vacuum isn't going to speed this up either.

Springchicken75 · 28/02/2023 20:33

People have got far bigger things to worry about quite frankly.
People are also sick to death of the strikes. They have become a normal way of life, like covid, another thing to work around.

noblegiraffe · 28/02/2023 20:37

Perhaps people should be sick to death of the government failing to run the country properly.

Crunchymunchies · 28/02/2023 20:39

Have any offers been made?

OP posts:
PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 28/02/2023 20:40

Loads of people moaning about it at work today. I don't even have kids, and I know all about the hassle it's caused.

noblegiraffe · 28/02/2023 20:45

Crunchymunchies · 28/02/2023 20:39

Have any offers been made?

No.

And the government have since announced another pay cut for experienced teachers next year.

No one has the energy to care. It’s not like the war is going to end tomorrow. We are in this for the long haul. People striking only adds to the burden and stress for the rest of us. I have bigger thing ms to worry about. Past caring.

Botw1 · 28/02/2023 20:49

Scottish teachers were offered and rejected 6%? I think

Ah poor dc

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 28/02/2023 18:18

None of the schools here that my DC or friends DC go to are shut.

I'm in the midlands.

It's the first of March they are striking in the Midlands

Crunchymunchies · 28/02/2023 21:07

What was the offer, for experienced teachers? @noblegiraffe

OP posts:
JudgingwithJudy · 28/02/2023 21:08

The year 11's are still going in because they are doing practice papers and revision as it is their mock exams this week. Plus they did say they might be doing PE.. much to my son's disgust!

England? There hasn't been an offer.

This year experienced teachers got 5%, inflation over 10%

For September the govt has recommended to the independent pay review body that they should recommend 3%, inflation predicted 6%

noblegiraffe · 28/02/2023 21:18

Incidentally the 5% this year was unfunded, it came out of school budgets. Same for next year, no new money for the pay rise.

Crunchymunchies · 28/02/2023 21:18

Sorry not offer … what was the pay cuts?

OP posts:
Springchicken75 · 28/02/2023 21:19

That’s an amazing pay rise back in the real world. Inflation will come down this year so the gap should close.

No, predicted inflation is double the 3% offer, therefore another real terms pay cut. I trust you understand inflation means money is worth less.

And if you haven't read this thread that I linked to already, you really should, to understand why it really matters. www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/4752592-utterly-disastrous-teacher-trainee-applications-for-next-year

Education is being destroyed as we watch, and any parent with a child in state education should be horrified.

Springchicken75 · 28/02/2023 21:29

It’s a guaranteed job with great pensions and holidays. I can’t get worked up about it. Most of us have bigger fish to fry. Like feeding the dc and keeping the lights on.

Very much in line with the majority of the country. Read the pay rise in private sector thread. Pretty much no one is getting an inflation rise as it’s not realistic. 5% is good. I agree that it’s an issue it’s not funded tho if h, that but should be sorted so all teachers can get the pay rise and it doesn’t affect school budgets.

Botw1 · 28/02/2023 21:35

@noblegiraffe

Are those figures nationwide or just England?

noblegiraffe · 28/02/2023 21:37

That's one of the issues the NEU are striking over. A fully funded pay rise.

And again, it doesn't matter if you think 5% is good if the people who should be training to be teachers don't think the pay is worth it.

We don't have enough teachers. Kids are going without teachers and the situation is getting worse and worse with no end in sight.

England. Education is devolved.

The government are not funding the 5% though. They are expecting schools to fund it from their already small budgets. That means they have to make cuts elsewhere. Support staff, intervention groups, smaller ratios, resources - all going! This directly impacts the children. It’s also not a guaranteed job as someone unthread said. There’s no money!

Botw1 · 28/02/2023 21:39

@noblegiraffe

Yes, I know

It just wasn't clear from the statement in your post.
