To ask how much your summer 2023 holiday is costing?

Doxxy17 · 25/02/2023 21:46

I know things have changed since last year but wow. Even compromising the price is still wow. To the point I'd rather pay for exactly what I want than pay so much for the compromise.

I need to get some perspective I think on whats the going rate these days. I dont like to discuss money with family and friends so would rather ask here.

Would you share if you are having a holiday, what you are paying, family size, board and term time or not so I can work out if I am BU in my budget?

I’ve just had a look and Our holiday last year by comparison for the same holiday this year is £900 more. And to be frank not worth it. The place we went to is lovely but for the board and rating is massively overpriced

weirdly enough the holiday we have booked this year (which we booked in June last year) is working out cheaper per person by £150 if we were to book today (although we got a free child place last year when booking so not overall cheaper but comparatively cheaper)

Without getting into debt? Nothing. Can't afford it.

Yet many people are struggling to afford one holiday, let alone 5 including 2 transatlantic

Libby has already said they don't have children though so climb off that high horse. It's nice that other people are able to plan so many great trips. Absolutely no need for bitterness or snide comnents. If you want to be snide, direct it towards the people who are making it difficult for you to enjoy the same privileges.

No I just think you are very gullible to believe everything you read on the internet.

Unless you're snowed under with debt up to your eyeballs there is pretty much no way people can afford all that what that poster says.

It is being realistic.

One of the children in my DCs class is the son of a premiership football player who is also in the England team. I don’t think they’ll be worrying about being in debt up to the eyeballs to take their usual holidays. Nor will the multiple other wealthy families that send their children there.

It may be your realistic that nobody can afford holidays. It’s certainly not everybodies.

The poster your referring to was spending less than £1.5k per holiday if I remember correctly. She’s hardly on millionaire territory!

The average tom dick and Harry that's more than what they earn. The average person cannot afford all them.

True but some will always have a lot more (and others a lot less) than the average.

Camping in France. £850 ferries (including cabins) and £500 campsite fees. One week. We'll mainly BBQ and eat baguettes. Odd meal out.

Greek Island hopping. Flights £1k, accommodation £2k for 10 days. Ferries and meals extra.

Camping weekends between £100 each a pop (UK)

May half term self catering UK £1000 for the week.

October half term - TBC.

Flights have increased for sure. But I think that's less about increased costs but more that we've been flying for too long, too cheaply. We will always use ferries over flights for environmental reasons. This is the first time in 7 years we'll have been on a plane.

10 days in Crete for 2 adults and 2 teens
Flights, s/c accom (3 bed), car hire comes to nearly 3k. We'll take about £1500 for spening
It's more than we would usually spend but not sure if its location (we usually do mainland Spain) or increased prices - probably a bit of both

Do you mind me asking when you are going and who you are flying with? We are going to Crete in August for 10 days and the flights alone have cost just over £1500 for 3 adults. We are flying from Gatwick. I'm worried I didn't do enough research on flights now!

Exactly. The average 'normal' working class family cannot afford that.

But I forgot these boards attract the more 'weathier' side of the population and not the average person earning a normal wage. (To even spending 1.5k for each holiday is a lot when you put in spending money etc) many people cannot even afford one of them.

For the average person working an average job which these boards seem to 'not attract' it is just bullshit.

It is far more believable for people to say they're spending a week in Crete, Algarve etc.

These boards are just full of 'snobs' who seem so out of touch of the real world. (Or just bullshitting, you decide)

🤣

We have booked to go to Tenerife (all inclusive) for a week during the Easter holidays and it cost nearly £3000 for 3 adults.

In August we are having an overnight stay in Windsor and then going on to Center Parcs Longleat. £650 for Center Parcs and will just book a cheap Travel Lodge for Windsor.

October half term we are going to Sorrento for 5 nights and staying in a lovely hotel. That has cost just over £2000 for 2 of us.

VestaTilley · 26/02/2023 10:12

A fair bit, because we’re moving around frequently so staying in hotels and guest houses. We’re going to Scotland and stopping for two nights in the Lakes on the way.

The hotels aren’t fancy, but we’re two adults and a young child, and have tried to find a couple of places with a pool. We’re going in summer holidays because we’re at a wedding mid-holiday so had to go then and decided to make our summer holiday around the wedding. Just hope the weather is ok.

The whole thing will probably come in around £1- 1.5k for accommodation, plus a lot of petrol, CalMac ferry and days out on top, but after having DC, then it being Covid, then (finally) buying a house we haven’t had a holiday for five years, so we’re treating ourselves. DS (4) still hasn’t been abroad or on a plane. Our gas bill was £700 this winter and our mortgage fix is up in May…so our two weeks in Scotland will definitely be our only holiday this year. Luckily we live in a nice part of the country, so are fortunate we can do days out at the beach etc in good weather.

Your post makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. So you're going on 5 holidays (minimum), 4 of them overseas but for "environmental reasons" you're taking the ferry where possible. Is this magical ferry you've seen powered by unicorn farts or something 🤣🤣🤣🤣

£1500 for a week in the Lakes (August) but we're going halvsies with my PIL as they're flipping hilarious! 😂 I cannot wait. Its going to be epically fun

It's a holiday cottage we've stayed at before and absolutely love it.

LemonPledge555 · 26/02/2023 10:15

I’m taking DD (6) to a caravan park to overlap with some other family. I was offered the sofa but politely declined as that’s not really a holiday is it 😂 that’s £230 for 3 nights, smallest caravan. Only booked a week or so ago so feel like that’s a good price.

Have also just booked a week in Barcelona. I was surprised that flights were around £1025 for me, DH and DD. It’s Ryanair but the flight times are actually good and we know we’ll manage in one suitcase too. AirBnB with 2 bedrooms is £1300. But between city and airport so good location. And so much to do. Apartment so will be having breakfasts and able to buy fruit and snacks etc. Good parking at the airport was £72. I know it’s a lot cheaper to book that ahead of time.

It does feel like a lot, but we’re bound by school holidays, DH very anti her missing days at school.

Last year we did 3 nights in Paris (aparthotel) and did some brilliant touristy stuff. Then 3 nights at Disney. Including all activities/hotels/tickets and probably half the meals it was about £4600. But not flights as we used air miles. School holidays though. And had inheritance money for that. I’m not sure we’d get that for the same price this year? But despite DDs best efforts it’ll be at least next year before we go to Disney again 😂

It's likely the case that, like me, you didn't book early enough. I booked 2 weeks ago and the prices were increasing on a daily basis for flights during school holidays. Plus they have also gone up in price massively in the last year.

Beautifulcoconuts · 26/02/2023 10:17

@JustMarriedBecca ummmm lol 😂😂😂

Unfortunately, ferries generate high emissions – almost twice as high per passenger kilometre than flights = as per Google.

Two abroad. One by ferry. One flight. One flight in 7 years. And the carbon emissions for a ferry compared with flying is bonkers low.

RoobarbandCustud · 26/02/2023 10:20

Cottage in St Ives, self catering obvs, 3 bed. 2 min walk to beach, gorgeous view, £1400 for 1 week. Premier Inn to break journey, £120 dinner, bed and breakfast for 4.

Lostinalibrary · 26/02/2023 10:22

I don’t know why people come on these threads just to get themselves worked up. There clearly is no shortage of people who can afford holidays. Fro example, we are going to Florida (tacky by mn standards). I have regularly seen people diss Florida as a holiday - so this isn’t a brag (not that I care). We’ve actually done it on the “cheap” as far as Florida goes. We aren’t going to all the parks, etc. That’s flights, hotel, car hire and one lot of tix. Still costing 15k before spends.

I can tell you, out of two flights PER day from just one airport. The flights are pretty much full. It’s not nonsense that people can afford holidays. Why come on to a thread about how much is your holiday to get angry you can’t aren’t having one, the call people liars. 🤷🏼‍♀️

OoooohMatron · 26/02/2023 10:22

GiltEdges · 25/02/2023 22:16

It's no bad thing really, overseas holidays have been underpriced for years. If the increase in prices encourages even some of the people who would have gone abroad this summer to holiday in the UK instead then the environmental impact will be huge.

It won't be the well off suffering though will it? They'll still be jetting off while those less fortunate will have to endure a rainy week in Skegness.

So you really really really care about the environment so much that you avoid 2 flights. But not so much that you still take 5 holidays. Got it! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Icequeen01 · 26/02/2023 10:25

@Casilero Aaah that could be the case. I only booked the flights last week. I thought February was early 🤣 I can never think ahead to holidays until Xmas is out of the way!

TeenTraumaTrials · 26/02/2023 10:29

We are flying Glasgow (or poss Edinburgh - DH has booking) to Chania with easyjet but we booked them really quickly after release so were under £1k for flights

Howmanysleepsnow · 26/02/2023 10:30

Those of you going abroad on the cheaper end of the scale, can you recommend cheaper destinations for accommodation/ cheaper agents for packages/ where to get cheapest flights etc. We normally book separately for the eurotunnel and accommodation, but I’m wondering if a package deal or flights and accommodation may work out cheaper this year. No idea where to start though as it all looks more expensive than upthread
