To ask how much your summer 2023 holiday is costing?

Doxxy17 · 25/02/2023 21:46

I know things have changed since last year but wow. Even compromising the price is still wow. To the point I'd rather pay for exactly what I want than pay so much for the compromise.

I need to get some perspective I think on whats the going rate these days. I dont like to discuss money with family and friends so would rather ask here.

Would you share if you are having a holiday, what you are paying, family size, board and term time or not so I can work out if I am BU in my budget?

Oh dear. It must be a shit life being so bitter.

It is far more believable that people say they are doing a week in Crete, 10 days in the Algarve etc.

Take a lot of these threads with a pinch of salt.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 26/02/2023 09:34

3 weeks 5 star AI in Egypt. Two adults 1 child.£6.5k

I am not bitter..far from it.. but honestly I just think people exaggerate a lot on these boards. Do you really believe what you all read on the internet by strangers? Take it all with a pinch of salt.

I find it perfectly acceptable to believe people go abroad more than once a year. To despute that is incredibly stupid.
If you don’t want to see how many holidays people take, don’t click on the holiday threads.
Don’t click on threads asking about peoples holidays then say it a stealth boost when people respond about their holidays 😂

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 26/02/2023 09:38

Zero. Can't afford it.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 26/02/2023 09:43

Devon in August 2k

Croatia in July 10k for 2 weeks. Yes I know it's insane but we haven't had a holiday aside from camping for years and due to some unexpected good luck we have a decent pot. (And no, I don't work for Shell!)

I guess you're the poster who thinks earning 6 figure salaries is the norm plus 50k bonus every year. On the threads which people comment on how much they earn.

But for the majority of people who earn normal wages they would not be able to afford all those holidays.
Unless they're heavily in debt up to their eyeballs maxing out their credit cards or bullshitting.

I’ve had years where I’ve done loads and some with no holidays. I find it entirely believable. As a student within arguably less money I travelled loads as was prepared to stay in a hostel. Now with kids I spend more for less.

Have a long weekend in centre parcs for £1k (probably worst value) and staying in someone else’s villa but flights probably £2k for 4 before any spends. Next year spending a fortune on Ikos.

i really want to do a spa weekend at pennyhill park but feel like the costs have ramped up too much to justify it.

Idtotallybangdreamoftheendlessnotgonnalie · 26/02/2023 09:48

2 adults, 2 kids, one week all inclusive in a trip advisor 1% resort £3900.

MattressKing4 · 26/02/2023 09:50

£1840 for 1 week all inclusive in Tenerife with Jet2. Three of us going and it includes unlimited entry to Siam Water Park. This is in June, our school is fine with kids being off during term time for holidays. It's been 5 years since we were last abroad so not sure if this is a good price or not! Includes direct flights and transfers as well.

uggmum · 26/02/2023 09:51

@Mulhollandmagoo
I booked my Sicily holiday with jet2. 1 week
Lovely hotel, sea view, private beach.
Flights, transfers etc for less than £2k.
So worth a look

This would be significantly cheaper if you were flying economy both ways. I’m interested to know what you’re anticipating spending £15k (so £3k per person?) on over 2 weeks given that you have already paid for accommodation and have some food included. Souvenirs I suppose? Once you’re in the parks most things are included other than food. I’ve done Disney many times, 3 in the last year in fact, and we don’t worry about the money and just spend what we want - but even then we haven’t come close to that kind of spending per person.

@QuizzlyBears we are hoping to do a similar trip (but a few days in NYC then 7 days in Florida, perhaps 3 at Disney) for a lot less than this. Any tips for us about best value Disney hotels/keeping costs reasonable vs what is a waste of money there please?

MissDollyMix · 26/02/2023 09:52

I joined a number of hotel groups on Facebook and I was shocked at how many people visited these 5* hotels more than once a year and then took other holidays on top! So it definitely does happen!

We spent a lot on holidays last year so this year was supposed to be a cheap year. When I looked at holiday cottages in the UK though they were coming in at around £1800 for a week and then you have to factor in fuel and food too. It just felt like too much. So instead we’ve booked to go to Tenerife in May 2a, 2c - 5* half-board and it’s about £3500. Taking the kids out of school for 3 days because doing that saved £1500. At least it will be warm and I won’t have to cook! We went to an all inclusive in Greece 3 years ago for £3k but when I went to look at it for this year the price had shot up to £8.5k!! For one week!! Prices have definitely gone up.

Hell I could ' afford' all those holidays. Max out credit cards to the limit.
Paying it back for years and years with interest rates.
Snowed under debt.

So take everything with a pinch of salt what people say.
Not real life people say on here. Can be heavily exaggerated.

PamelaDawes · 26/02/2023 09:57

We may not holiday this year. We have NEVER not taken 2-3 weeks of holiday except in 2020. I love planning and taking holidays.

I just can’t justify the prices; especially when we are so much worse off with inflation. I refuse to spend multiple 1000s on a uk break again (looking at you, Devon caravan park, overcrowded pool, tacky entertainment, in damp August 2021).

I have a couple tent camping weekends booked with younger DC. I will keep an eye out to see if prices drop, if not holidays may be alternate year experiences.

TheBirdintheCave · 26/02/2023 09:57

@Mulhollandmagoo Yeah I booked everything separately over the course of two weeks :) I am autistic so when I get interested in something I hyper focus on it and research everything to the nth degree. I have some quite intense spreadsheets with pre-vetted restaurants and an itinerary of activities all mapped out and ready to be downloaded to my phone 😅

To start with I decide where we might want to go (I read travel sites and watch YouTube videos to get a good idea of what would appeal to us as a family) and when we want to go. My husband knows that planning holidays is more in my wheelhouse (he has ADHD and is very disorganised) so is happy to take my recommendations 😂 Once that is nailed down and the flights are booked (I use SkyScanner to find the best deal) I use Booking.com to find a good deal on an apartment (we can't do hotels as we need washing facilities for my son's cloth nappies and also like having a separate living room). I like Booking.com because it allows me to choose one that I can reserve and cancel for free in case I change my mind later on or find something better. Sometimes it can be cheaper to book directly through the hotel or apartments website though so that's worth a look too. I try to find something under £90 a night as my aim is always to get flights and accommodation for around £1k. It's not always possible, I was maybe £200 over with this trip, but having a pre set budget helps me not to go overboard in terms of what we can actually afford. I imagine this will increase once we have a second child to account for in terms of plane seat booking but for now it works well.

Once the apartment is sorted then I move on to transfers/transport. We don't drive on holiday so any taxis we need I book in advance to get the cheapest deal. If the city has a good internal transport system and/or is too big to be easily walkable with a toddler (like Lisbon for example) then I'll also pre book tourist travel cards for us as well that can be used on trams/buses etc.

I also buy a very comprehensive travel insurance plan well in advance to make sure we won't lose out in the event of illness or cancellations.

Hope this rambling was of some assistance! 😅

WordtoYoMumma · 26/02/2023 09:59

We can't afford a holiday really. My mum owns a caravan on the coast and lets us use it for free, so we have "booked" that for 2 weeks - we won't all be there the whole two weeks but it's not far away so we can dip in and out. Food costs will mainly come from the monthly grocery budget, so our cost is just travel and then daily activities which we will tailor to what's in our bank accounts at the time...

I am trying to save money each month (getting harder and harder with no pay rises and everything costing SO MUCH) and am hoping to have 1k stashed away by end of July, to cover the 6 week break. Kids are aged 10-18. Eldest pays his own way, largely, but I wouldn't expect him to chip in for a family meal out, for example. He also won't join us for much of the holidays as he will be working!

I suspect I will budget around £500 all in for the family holiday, not including groceries for the caravan, so we can go out for a curry, have an ice cream on the beach, do some paid activities etc 🙂

No I just think you are very gullible to believe everything you read on the internet.

Unless you're snowed under with debt up to your eyeballs there is pretty much no way people can afford all that what that poster says.

It is being realistic.

IsletsOfLangerhans · 26/02/2023 10:01

1.8K for four of us (3 adults one teenager) - 10 days in Italy. Ferry and self drive to Northern Italy; self catering lovely 2bed apartment, petrol costs and one night in hotel on return route factored into price. All self booked.

soboredoflooking · 26/02/2023 10:02

First time booking school summer hols 😞

It's costing just under £4k
End June/start of July (Scottish holidays which is a bit cheaper than later in July/Aug)
4 star AI
10 nights
2 adults and 2 children (6&3)

Last year was less than £2k for the same but was a 3 star rather than 4star and a few weeks earlier so June but not school holidays.

I did notice travel insurance quotes were about double what they usually are. Ended up getting an annual policy as we going away later in year too.

You must have a very small circle to believe nobody can afford more than 1 holiday a year without being in debt.

Furrydogmum · 26/02/2023 10:02

Early August, 7 nights in a four bed/sleeps 8 country house near Fort William/Aviemore in Scotland £2000 + can't remember cost for 2x dogs but not huge. Seven adults, one 10st dog and one 3st dog plus luggage, in two newish diesel cars so unless fuel prices rise dramatically, maybe £100/150 max per car depending on the travelling around we do. Food £200 plus eating out - won't be everyone due to dogs - so maybe £500 all in. Probably not much more than £4000 for the seven of us for the week including spending..

OoooohMatron · 26/02/2023 10:02

£2600 for 10 nights self catering in Turkey at the end of July. This does not include taxis to the airport and spends.

The average tom dick and Harry that's more than what they earn. The average person cannot afford all them.
