To not tip hairdresser?

My appointment was at 11:45. I'm still waiting to be seen. My hairdresser has also said they're unable to do what I booked as they're double booked, so can only do half of what I want (have to leave my roots and can't dye). I always, always tip at hairdressers and restaurants, I usually give her £20 tip for a £90 appointment but I'm really annoyed, I'm going out tonight and wanted my roots and colour done, plus I'm still waiting to actually be seen. I booked for roots, dye, haircut and blow dry, but they are only able to do cut and blow dry. AIBU if I don't tip today? I feel bad but I'm really annoyed at the same time.

I never tip my hairdresser, and I’m a thoughtful type, always tip at restaurants etc.

cherish123 · 25/02/2023 17:43

No. I would not tip.
I never tip hairdressers. £20 is a huge amount to tip.

Murdoch1949 · 25/02/2023 21:54

Your stylist obviously doesn't give a shit about you, despite your massively overgenerous tipping policy. I'm surprised you didn't walk out. You certainly need to never return and just find a better salon. They've taken you for a mug.

I wouldn't even be waiting let alone tipping. That's awful service.

Yep, I would have walked out and not come back.
Hardly your fault they are so disorganised

Greenshed · 26/02/2023 17:43

I don’t tip the hairdresser except at Christmas. It’s expensive enough as it is.
Out of interest, and as an aside, I wonder if men tip their barber?

Ceryneianhind · 26/02/2023 17:51

Nanny0gg · 25/02/2023 12:37

For those that still tip, that's virtually 10% so not unusual.

And if the stylist doesn't own the salon she won't be getting £90. Salons often take a high percentage of each appt + chair rent if the stylist is self-employed

I hope you're not an accountant

Same. I'd not be going back either. I don't give second chances for shit service like that.

Wow ! Unprofessional!
I’m a hairdresser
i had an appointment with another hairdresser for consultation she wasn’t there but walked in 5 mins later with coffee I didn’t get my hair done if that’s how it begins it will deffo get worse !

artsperson · 26/02/2023 17:59

Rubbish service. No tip!

VickyEadieofThigh · 26/02/2023 17:59

TWENTY QUID TIP? No wonder they think they can treat you with such contempt.

Ginburee · 26/02/2023 18:10

You tip way too much.

I pay enough to get my hair cut and don't tip.

I am a nurse and wash peoples pee and pok off my shoes at the end of the day and no-one tips me.

I absolutely would not tip! I had an appointment for my nails once and got there 5 min early. She had the next appointment in the chair and told me to have a seat. I did not have a seat. I stood next to her table the whole time. My nails were a mess or I would’ve left. I did not go back. I had been seeing this lady for about 6 years. I only changed the people I saw for my nails 3 times in over 18 years. It was always because of horrendous service like that.

Same here. I would leave.

diddl · 26/02/2023 18:27

Well that's a way of trying to get money isn't it?

Can only do a cut & blow dry which they will doubtless want to do again when doing roots & dye next time.

LaDamaDeElche · 26/02/2023 18:29

I can't believe people still tip hairdressers these days. They're expensive enough as is!

WisherWood · 26/02/2023 18:29

So you were early, she didn't see you straight away, so you stood over her and waited? Have I got that right? Seems odd to expect service right there and then if you get there early.

AllyArty · 26/02/2023 18:34

Bad service-don’t tip.

This! No chance would I tip someone who I'm already paying £100 to do my hair. Fuck that.

mandlerparr · 26/02/2023 18:48

I would have just left. You are not going to get the things you wanted done to start with, so what is the point? If it happens again, just tell them you don't have time for this. Not a smart hairdresser to not keep an appointment time for a high tipper when a lot of people don't tip at all.

bellswithwhistles · 26/02/2023 18:48

People still tip hairdressers??! Why? The price is the price. No one tips me for my job!

Mandyjack · 26/02/2023 18:49

I'd be annoyed if I'd booked and then told I'm not getting what I asked for. I'd be tempted to walk out TBH

Mothership4two · 26/02/2023 18:50

I hope OP didn't tip and had a great night out. Personally I would have been pretty vocal - don't get the impression that's the OP's way of doing things though. It's not clear if they apologised, told OP there would be a long wait and asked her if she would rather wait than rebook. Or did she sit there waiting to be squeezed in? I certainly would not go back.

£20 seems like a big tip to me. I don't tip my hairdresser who is the salon owner but I do the young women who wash my hair. It depends what is in my purse - £2-5 usually.

I don't mean to drip feed but DP and I only have one key atm, I lost mine a few weeks ago and told him I'd be out until 3:30 so I can't actually go home.

Think you need to spend the money you've saved on getting a key cut!

whynotwhatknot · 26/02/2023 18:52

people going on about amrica ive just come back from there

they dont get minimum wage its made up from tips and theyre very good at service there

i do tip my hairdresser and cab drivers/waiters here usually though

SallyWD · 25/02/2023 12:25

£20 tip?! I thought I was generous by giving a fiver!

Me too 😮
