To not tip hairdresser?

My appointment was at 11:45. I'm still waiting to be seen. My hairdresser has also said they're unable to do what I booked as they're double booked, so can only do half of what I want (have to leave my roots and can't dye). I always, always tip at hairdressers and restaurants, I usually give her £20 tip for a £90 appointment but I'm really annoyed, I'm going out tonight and wanted my roots and colour done, plus I'm still waiting to actually be seen. I booked for roots, dye, haircut and blow dry, but they are only able to do cut and blow dry. AIBU if I don't tip today? I feel bad but I'm really annoyed at the same time.

@Garman I don't know really, I just feel grateful for the service they provide which is usually good.

I question why you feel grateful for them allowing you to buy a service that they provide! There are plenty of hairdressers fighting for customers. They should be grateful for your custom. Even with great service, in my opinion you are tipping way, way too much!

People still tip hairdressers??! Why? The price is the price. No one tips me for my job!

Nor me!

Wombatbum · 26/02/2023 19:10

If we’re into tipping because wages are crap, your kids nursery workers will be grateful!!! 😖

@Viviennemary I've even done £30 before for a good service here!

Well, now you know how much they value your generous tipping.

The only tip I'd be giving them is for the three legged nag at Aintree.

Don't make a fool of yourself any more-as others have said, they don't value you so take your custom elsewhere/

No tip? I would have left, and never go back. Find a new hairdresser.

Totally agree with this^. Is there a Hairdressing College near to you? They are always looking for models and the prices are very reasonable. I have used them for years, no complaints, everything is well supervised.

Spectre8 · 26/02/2023 19:24

Lol I have to laugh cos OP you have been taken for such a mug! The way you tip has got you absolutely nothing extra, it just shows that despite tipping them so generously you don't even get treated well or better than non tippers. You may aswell flush that tip down the loo!

They know they can get away with it too and they are cos you're there waiting for them to do half of what you booked for. You might not tip them today but they know u will still come back and u will carry on tipping.

But hey its your money after all of you want to waste it go right ahead but wow what a mug you have ended up being

Agree with this, now there is a minimum wage and hairdressing colleges there are no apprentices earning a pittance

Maireas · 26/02/2023 19:25

"I feel grateful for the service they provide"
It's not a charitable institution, they're charging you for the service already!
That's the deal. No need to pay extra. Would you add £20 onto your Tesco shop because they do a good service?

Have to agree with you. What woman cannot wash and set/blow dry her own hair - not saying cutting - but ordinary set/blow dry.

SeenYourArse · 26/02/2023 20:01

Haven’t read anything except your OP, but have to say I’m a hairstylist and that’s absolutely completely and utterly unacceptable in every way! They should be apologising profusely AND giving you some form of compensation ie the cut free or a free treatment or a discount on your next appointment.

SeenYourArse · 26/02/2023 20:02

DO NOT TIP THEM A PENNY!

Pogue4Life · 26/02/2023 20:07

What happened with your appointment Op?

PinkyFlamingo · 26/02/2023 20:09

Nanny0gg · 25/02/2023 12:37

For those that still tip, that's virtually 10% so not unusual.

And if the stylist doesn't own the salon she won't be getting £90. Salons often take a high percentage of each appt + chair rent if the stylist is self-employed

10% of £90 is £9 not £20

SarahsHoneydew · 26/02/2023 20:34

I would have left, bad enough keeping you waiting but they are not even giving you what you booked in for. Never mind not tipping, I wouldn’t be going back there again.

Middleagedspreadisreal · 26/02/2023 20:35

I never tip. They charge enough.

JudgeRudy · 26/02/2023 21:08

Most definitely don't tip. In fact I'd be asking why they didn't notify you earlier/as soon as it became apparent they'd messed up and would be unable to give the service you requested.
Tbh I wouldn't bother having it done, or I'd go elsewhere. I might loiter for a bit though and request a coffee whilst I googled someone else!

HeavenIsAHalfpipe · 26/02/2023 21:14

@criedariver

100% definitely no tip, even if they do a good job. Hairdressers, just like every other profession, are on minimum wage - and that is the lowest that they get. They're not being paid below minimum wage/a very low salary. So why are people still giving them tips? Confused

Dozens of professions don't get tips, like checkout operators, people who work in a fish and chip shop or takeaway, Travelodge Workers, Premier Inn workers, market workers, shelf Stackers, street sweepers, factory workers, McDonalds workers, refuse collectors, doctor/dental receptionists, pharmacy workers, dental nurses, etc, and also doctors, nurses, teachers, paramedics, police etc. You name it. We don't tip all them, do we?

This all harks back to a time when hairdressers - particularly for the first one or two years of their working life, were paid very little. I know that a friend of mine who had been working as a hairdresser for about a year, was only on £1.05 pence an hour when I was on £3.75 an hour - in an office ... (This was about 35 years ago.)

But now, since the Minimum Pay Act in the late 1990s, there is absolutely no need whatsoever to give anyone a tip. Hairdressers, along with Taxi drivers, and waiters/waitresses have always been given a tip. (Because their pay used to be very low.) But now there is no need for it at all.

I know people might say, 'but they really work hard.' But most people work hard. So why don't we all get tips? Confused

Also, a £20 tip, for a £90 haircut/style?! Batshit. That's virtually 20%!

Also, her only doing half your hair, because she is double booked is grossly unprofessional, and is appalling customer service. This would have me never returning, and giving her a poor review online.

HeavenIsAHalfpipe · 26/02/2023 21:16

Also as a pp said, hairdressers charge enough as it is! Especially these days! The prices over the past couple of years have risen so much I actually just do my own hair now.

I had an appointment for my nails once and got there 5 min early. She had the next appointment in the chair and told me to have a seat. I did not have a seat. I stood next to her table the whole time. My nails were a mess or I would’ve left. I did not go back.

So you were early, she didn't see you straight away, so you stood over her and waited? Have I got that right? Seems odd to expect service right there and then if you get there early.

The person she was doing was the appointment AFTER me. I stood there intentionally making her uncomfortable for taking the next appointment when I was there early.

cookie4640 · 26/02/2023 21:40

I don’t tip ever anyway - they are in control of their prices and a haircut isn’t cheap anyway! I never expect and have never had a tip from my customers, I don’t tip at the supermarket, and I rarely tip In restaurants- we have minimum wage here unlike USA where I do tip the servers.

id be looking for a new hairdressers, wouldn’t even be waiting for the cut and blow dry!

HeavenIsAHalfpipe · 26/02/2023 21:45

I should re-phrase my words really. Hairdressers are on at LEAST minimum wage. THAT is when they start. After several years, they will be on much more.

rookiemere · 26/02/2023 21:45

I wonder if the OP still waiting patiently at the hairdressers , battery gone on her phone, wondering if she dare tip only a tenner for being so shamefully treated

Happychappy3 · 26/02/2023 21:50

SallyWD · 25/02/2023 12:25

£20 tip?! I thought I was generous by giving a fiver!

I agree 😵
Is 20£ the norm? I would never have an extra 20 spare on top of the cost of getting my hair done !

Seems more odd not to wait the five minutes for your client and take the NRXY appointment (who must have been VERY early) instead.
