To not tip hairdresser?

My appointment was at 11:45. I'm still waiting to be seen. My hairdresser has also said they're unable to do what I booked as they're double booked, so can only do half of what I want (have to leave my roots and can't dye). I always, always tip at hairdressers and restaurants, I usually give her £20 tip for a £90 appointment but I'm really annoyed, I'm going out tonight and wanted my roots and colour done, plus I'm still waiting to actually be seen. I booked for roots, dye, haircut and blow dry, but they are only able to do cut and blow dry. AIBU if I don't tip today? I feel bad but I'm really annoyed at the same time.

Oh, little fat fingers - do you never cease to humiliate me! 😀

The train driver will be the highest paid out of that list.

Most stylists don't earn a fortune. Especially since covid

People seem to have no idea what some people earn...

Pal's father was a London cabbie... He earned loads... And had tips on top... (as 'taxi drivers don't earn well' 😂)

At the time, it was double what a qualified nurse (his wife) earnt in a central London hospital.

I've never tipped a hairdresser, I've never tipped anyone. I don't get tips for my job.

Neither do I, nobody ever tipped me. Hairdressers either rent the chair and keep the cash or get paid a wage. It's not up to us to subsidise them.

shittyshitshit · 26/02/2023 19:05

Nor me!

Ahh not just me then. Thought i was being a tightass!
You've already paid for the service no need to tip.
Why would i tip you for a job you're already getting paid for.

Singularity82 · 26/02/2023 22:55

No way would I tip. I wouldn’t have even waited, OP. Look at it the other way-if you’d booked a lengthy and expensive service such as a colour and they’d blocked out 2 hours, then you turned up and said actually I’ll just have a trim and blow dry, would that be ok? No, of course not! Your time isn’t worth less than theirs. I’d be looking for another salon.

I don't either.

I did a few years ago but the price has more than doubled since then.

GodSaveTheClean · 26/02/2023 23:17

I tip hairdresser, cleaner etc at Christmas. £20?! Good grief!
You don’t sound like you value your own time much OP

T1Dmama · 26/02/2023 23:31

I wouldn’t have even stayed.. so no 100% wouldn’t tip

T1Dmama · 26/02/2023 23:45

Nanny0gg · 25/02/2023 12:37

For those that still tip, that's virtually 10% so not unusual.

And if the stylist doesn't own the salon she won't be getting £90. Salons often take a high percentage of each appt + chair rent if the stylist is self-employed

Since when has £20 been 10% of £90 😂😂
£10 is 10% of £100… so £20 is more than 20% of £90!!!! (22.22% infact)

oosha · 27/02/2023 02:53

There is no way I would be tipping if I wasn’t getting exactly what I booked, I would be seriously pissed off. To be fair I would probably look for someone else and not go back, that’s very unprofessional. And £20 tip is crazy for a £90 appointment in my view unless you have cash to burn.

Allblackeverythingalways · 27/02/2023 07:49

Actually I ditched a nail tech once for having a go at me for being late (I lived in another town and used to drive to her after work. One day the traffic was very bad so I called to let her know)
"If you're not here in 5 minutes I won't be able to do your nails" it would have made me 10 minutes late max.
I routinely sat there waiting for her to finish the previous client for 20-30 minutes.
So she lost a customer.
I've ditched many a hairdresser for shite service too.
It goes both ways, you keep me waiting regularly, I expect you to cut me some slack too.
I do my own gels now, turns out it's not hard, and definitely not worth the money.

rookiemere · 27/02/2023 07:52

Yes @Allblackeverythingalways I had a similar experience at my hairdresser.
I routinely have to wait for George - for a hairdresser he's not very skilled at multi tasking i.e. talking and working at the same time. I don't really mind, he has great chat and they have a good coffee machine.
But the one time I got caught in traffic, the receptionist was very demanding to know if it was going to be a 5 or 10 minutes delay when I couldn't honestly tell at that point in time.

ChilledBeez · 27/02/2023 12:02

Ha ha - I thought the exact same thing. £20 is way over the top.
To OP - Deffo would not tip. Why would you even think about it?

fedupwithcookingfromscratch · 27/02/2023 12:46

No tip - and if I were you, I would get your roots done instead. Do your own blowdry - colour is more important if you’re going out!

UdoU · 27/02/2023 13:16

I get my hair done at a college. Where do
people stand on tipping students?

I always tip but reckon I could get my hair done more often if I didn’t tip. They are always asking me to come back, as I have a long hair.

I disagree, it depends on your hair - a good blow dry can disguise my roots and I look way better with a blow dry and a bit of grey than covered roots and doing my own blow dry!

Happygirl79 · 27/02/2023 16:37

You sound as if you have low self esteem and you're over generous with your tips to be liked?
I would have walked out ages ago

SaponificationQueen · 26/02/2023 21:37

The person she was doing was the appointment AFTER me. I stood there intentionally making her uncomfortable for taking the next appointment when I was there early.

Ah, thanks. So someone queue jumped and she just went with it? Think I'd just buy a nail file, to be honest.

I tip students when I go to the local college.

They only charge £10-15 for a really good, well-supervised haircut - I am happy to give them another couple of quid for themselves.

I've been going to the same salon for years but I've never tipped, nor the girl who threads my brows. I pay the prices they set, and I am a repeat customer in there every month. I'm very happy with the service and they really are lovely people, but I think sometimes tipping is unnecessary in this country. We already pay a decent amount for the services we receive, anything extra is not needed. I wouldn't tip in Mcdonald's, a bus driver, or an amazon driver, etc. I worked retail for years and never got tipped. It's not a case of "I didn't get anything why should you" but I fear we will be like America soon. People will be afraid not to tip, but not getting the service we pay for in the first place.

I agree. If people are employed, it's for their employer to pay a fair wage. If they are self employed, its for them to charge it. The only time I tip is in a restaurant where service has genuinely been very good and its deserved or where service is part of the t&c additional charge. I have worked plenty of minimum wage jobs without tips. I think we are as a country in danger of moving more towards the US in many respects. A tipping culture just encourages employers to pay naff wages.

GulfCoastBeachGirl · 27/02/2023 23:55

Maybe this is just an American thing, but it's definitely customary to tip a hairdresser, usually in the 20% range. That's assuming you're happy with the service provided.

The stylist in this scenario however has handled everything poorly and I personally wouldn't tip nor is it likely I'd return.

LoisLane66 · 28/02/2023 01:02

I very very rarely tip and never at restaurants or hairdressers. They're doing a job for which they get paid. When I was working I didn't get tips. I made sure my career paid enough to live comfortably.

ToaPayoh · 02/04/2023 09:36

I used to tip hairdressers, but never felt comfortable with it because never sure what to give or who to give it to (as you often have more than one person washing, cutting, or even taking the payment at the end). Also someone said to me that you never tip the owner, and I never go anywhere frequently enough to know which one (if any) the owner is! So I've just stopped tipping unless they have a tip jar on the counter as I feel happier doing that.

Tipping is a funny old thing. You tip some people in employment, and not others - but they all provide some kind of a service 🤔
