To not tip hairdresser?

My appointment was at 11:45. I'm still waiting to be seen. My hairdresser has also said they're unable to do what I booked as they're double booked, so can only do half of what I want (have to leave my roots and can't dye). I always, always tip at hairdressers and restaurants, I usually give her £20 tip for a £90 appointment but I'm really annoyed, I'm going out tonight and wanted my roots and colour done, plus I'm still waiting to actually be seen. I booked for roots, dye, haircut and blow dry, but they are only able to do cut and blow dry. AIBU if I don't tip today? I feel bad but I'm really annoyed at the same time.

I thought it was normal to tip hair dressers? I always see people tipping at the barbers too...do people not tip waiters/waitresses either?

Not £20 though! More like a fiver at most

Weallhaveavoice · 25/02/2023 13:54

I always find Tipping the hairdresser stressy
Never know if it’s expected, how much.
Ill tip a waitor/ess if the service is good. If not I don’t
We always do a Christmas tip for the postmen and bin men because they are marvellous

Its interesting how much people say they tip, now I know I’m probably a bit stingy. Tbh I don’t think we should have to, no one tips me, no Christmas bonus, nothing.

OP if the service falls short don’t tip
If the service is above and beyond tip ( think that’s the methodology I’ll use in the future )
If you have to make two trips as they’re not doing it all in one then is it right / fare on you to tip twice

America12 · 25/02/2023 13:55

I'd leave. You're massively over tipping.

SeemsSoUnfair · 25/02/2023 13:56

spend the £20 tip on an extra couple of glasses ofWineand you won't care if your roots look shit.

Enjoy your night out!

I don't mean to drip feed but DP and I only have one key atm, I lost mine a few weeks ago and told him I'd be out until 3:30 so I can't actually go home.

Coffee ? Shopping? Lunch?
Home root touch up kit ?

DarkDarkNight · 25/02/2023 13:56

What did you do in the end OP? I wouldn’t tip or certainly not more than a couple of pounds in this situation. They left you waiting more than half an hour, have double booked so you can’t get a colour just a cut and blow dry and they don’t seem overly fussed about it.

Maireas · 25/02/2023 13:57

EllieM27 · 25/02/2023 13:31

I certainly wouldn’t tip in this situation as they haven’t provided good service. I’d continue tipping in general though and don’t think your tip is unusual. I also always tipped stylists £20-25 when I was in the UK. Now that I’m in the US I tip anywhere from $50-100 (~£42-85) depending on what I’m having done, even though stylists here make more money even before tips. I’m happy to do it as they deserve extra for their skill, and also because getting in with the best stylists in an area can be competitive and I want to keep them. 😂

You sometimes tip £85?!

JMSA · 25/02/2023 13:57

Definitely not Sad

Blort · 25/02/2023 13:58

MelchiorsMistress · 25/02/2023 12:25

Definitely no tip today! I think being a generous tipper can work against you in some cases because the service provider assumes you’re a soft touch who will put up with service that comes below expectations and still come back, and still tip.

Ask if they’re giving you a discount seeing as they are unable to provide you with the service you booked.

Absolutely! So annoyed but definitely was left that impression by my previous hairdresser who kept charging me more and more and last time made a mistake with colour and never even told me. I assume she thought I wouldn't look at my own head?

Moved on to another stylist now after years.

WilsonMilson · 25/02/2023 13:58

Nanny0gg · 25/02/2023 12:37

For those that still tip, that's virtually 10% so not unusual.

And if the stylist doesn't own the salon she won't be getting £90. Salons often take a high percentage of each appt + chair rent if the stylist is self-employed

Maths is not your strong point. £20 tip on £90 is more than 20%. 22.22% to be exact.

Ridiculously high tipping. I would expect a big discount on your cut and blow dry today for your inconvenience and their mistake. I certainly wouldn’t leave a tip.

Maireas · 25/02/2023 13:59

Nanny0gg · 25/02/2023 13:18

Nor would I. But that's the salon owner not the stylist.

So it depends which one does your hair

Nope. They set their rate, I pay their rate. Fair exchange.
That is all.

ArcaneWireless · 25/02/2023 13:59

Given the lack of key, I’d have paid my hard earned money to a locksmith.

And would have done my hair myself today.

I’m curious as to why the person in the chair was more important than you.

Either way, I’d not be back. And if you do go back OP, I’d not be tipping so generously in future.

It got ye nowt.

AngelinaFibres · 25/02/2023 14:00

Garman · 25/02/2023 12:27

Why do you give such a big tip? They decide their prices there's no requirement on you to tip.

This. Maybe it's a city thing bit I have never tipped a hairdresser in my life. I don't know anyone who does that. They tell me the price, do the job and I pay them.

ArcaneWireless · 25/02/2023 14:01

SeemsSoUnfair · 25/02/2023 13:56

That is a better solution than mine 😆

@TomatoSandwiches

I bet the staff in McDonald’s can’t believe it when you tip! I have never ever heard of anyone tipping in McDonald’s.

You order at the machine. How do you actually give them the tip.

Hellzbellz25 · 25/02/2023 14:04

I never tip the hairdresser, I pay by card so it isn't awkward! I don't get tips for my job and it's much more important than doing someone's hair

Mothertess · 25/02/2023 14:06

I've never tipped at a hairdressers, the set the rate and I pay it. For a all I know gratuity is included. Always tip in restaurants for good service.

What did you do in the end OP? I would have left.

Maireas · 25/02/2023 14:10

AngelinaFibres · 25/02/2023 14:03

Presses it into their hand with a wink 😉

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 25/02/2023 14:11

Yep. It's a weird one that you pay for a service that costs X but it's become the norm to give some professions a tip. So you tip a hairdresser and taxi and person who brings your restaurant food but not the guy who cooks it, or whoever services your boiler (also £90) or sweeps the chimney.

I had a convo with my hairdresser and she said you don't tip the top person/owner, just the junior or whoever washes your hair.

NoBiscuitsLeftInMyTin · 25/02/2023 14:12

Forget the tip - I’d be gone.

QueenCamilla · 25/02/2023 14:15

The tips here!! 😯🤯

A visit to a hair-dresser cost so much these days, that I've stopped tipping altogether! All the hairdresser's I've visited in the last years have been self-employed, so I'm sure they've set their prices at a comfortable earnings point for themselves.

I usually leave a few quid to my son's barber, who always seem to be surprised. Like: Are you sure madam!?

This hair-tipping thing seems yet another "be nice" thing that women do.

Maireas · 25/02/2023 14:16

I think that's a good point, @QueenCamilla (curtseys).
They should set appropriate price points, which I'm sure they do.

ILiveAt64ZooLane · 25/02/2023 14:17

£20 eek, I feel stingey, my hairdresser gets £10 at Christmas.

QueenCamilla · 25/02/2023 14:19

Just ignore me @Maireas .
I want my privacy too.
😁

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 25/02/2023 14:19

I'd get it cut but find a new hairdresser for next time who values your time.
Double booking isn't a good enough excuse.
