To not tip hairdresser?

My appointment was at 11:45. I'm still waiting to be seen. My hairdresser has also said they're unable to do what I booked as they're double booked, so can only do half of what I want (have to leave my roots and can't dye). I always, always tip at hairdressers and restaurants, I usually give her £20 tip for a £90 appointment but I'm really annoyed, I'm going out tonight and wanted my roots and colour done, plus I'm still waiting to actually be seen. I booked for roots, dye, haircut and blow dry, but they are only able to do cut and blow dry. AIBU if I don't tip today? I feel bad but I'm really annoyed at the same time.

My whole hair appointment costs half what you tip!

Nanny0gg · 25/02/2023 12:37

For those that still tip, that's virtually 10% so not unusual.

And if the stylist doesn't own the salon she won't be getting £90. Salons often take a high percentage of each appt + chair rent if the stylist is self-employed

£9 would be 10% of £90, so £99. £20 is a 22% tip (!)

I explained afterwards I pop money in the charity box there as the staff can't take tips.

I donate to Foodbank when I can instead of tipping for my haircut, so much the same

Never tipped anyone, not going to start now.

Can I ask, not even a ‘keep the change’? Never?

Bullshot · 25/02/2023 15:37

I hope you walked out OP.

If you did stay for the cut and blowdry then certainly don't tip -and I'd ask for a reduction in price for the colour on the next visit as they have inconvenienced you.

@WaltzingWaters

dont exaggerate

I’m genuinely not. All I have is a cut, and have a hairdresser who comes to my house. It costs £10.

Habreathmint · 25/02/2023 15:43

I hope you left! She's shown total disrespect and doesn't deserve your custom. But tipping £20, £30 is demented. She should be giving you 5 star treatment!

gemeouttahere · 25/02/2023 15:59

Meanwhile back at the hair salon....did you stay or go, did you tip or not, will you use them again or go elsewhere, OP?

That's a very lovely thing to do.

You sometimes tip £85?!

Afraid so! Especially if I get it done while I’m in LA. But it’s fairly common in the large cities here. Great stylists have big followings and can be hard to get in with so it’s expected to add a good tip on top. I’ve had enough bad cuts and colors in my life that I now suck it up and pay hundreds of £ (well, $ now) to have my balayage done three or four times a year. It ends up being worth it to not be side-eyeing my hair in the mirror.

I’d be annoyed they hadn’t rang me and asked if I still wanted it done.

I don’t tip the hairdresser unless they behave cash on me, then I’d leave them a tenner tops.

Erm, no. 10% is £9 tip. £20 is over double that

YouJustDoYou · 25/02/2023 16:42

£20 quid tip!! Jesus fucking Christ! That'd feed me for a week!

ttcat37 · 25/02/2023 16:50

Tip the hairdresser? Wtf? Every appointment?

Maireas · 25/02/2023 16:52

@YouJustDoYou - it seems that there are a lot of people with significant disposable income. Just look at any hen do or wedding thread, for example. I think it's a very generous tip, and unnecessary, but some folks like to splash the cash! Her money, but she's not exactly getting great service in return.

Piepiepiepie · 25/02/2023 16:56

I never tip the hairdresser. Am wondering whether I’m making some huge faux pas now, but my appointment usually costs around £140 so I don’t feel the need to tip on top of this!

Yes, money indeed; I guess for me and those I know £20 is a huge amount to just give away when you;ve ALREADY paid for getting your hair cut all fancy-like. I cut my own, heh. I can buy so, so much food for £20.

Maireas · 25/02/2023 17:03

I think you're right, @YouJustDoYou - it's an additional sum on top of something quite pricey. In your situation, you learn to make every penny count. Just be glad you're not in the USA with those tipping expectations!

KillingLoneliness · 25/02/2023 17:12

I don’t tip anyone ever! 🙈

Thanks x I don't earn a lot but try to donate where I can. I'd personally rather it went to someone I know needs it more than me rather than someone on a similar wage.

BotterMon · 25/02/2023 17:17

YANBU. I never tip my hairdresser. He owns the salon and works alone. If he wants more money he can put his prices up.

They obviously don't value you, your time or your custom so I would have walked out.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 25/02/2023 17:22

They obviously think you’re a soft touch, if you throw your money around like that. Vote with your feet!
