To not tip hairdresser?

criedariver · 25/02/2023 12:18

My appointment was at 11:45. I'm still waiting to be seen. My hairdresser has also said they're unable to do what I booked as they're double booked, so can only do half of what I want (have to leave my roots and can't dye). I always, always tip at hairdressers and restaurants, I usually give her £20 tip for a £90 appointment but I'm really annoyed, I'm going out tonight and wanted my roots and colour done, plus I'm still waiting to actually be seen. I booked for roots, dye, haircut and blow dry, but they are only able to do cut and blow dry. AIBU if I don't tip today? I feel bad but I'm really annoyed at the same time.

I pay £65 for my full head highlights, cut and blow and just tip a fiver!

That's shocking service op! What did they say about not being able to fulfil your appointment?! Id be furious especially as you are going out!

Can they not at least stick a toner on or do a quick root melt so at least your colour is refreshed?

Just ignore me @Maireas .
I want my privacy too.

Yesterday I paid £194 for a colour and blowdry, I can’t start giving tips on top

Tinkerbyebye · 25/02/2023 14:24

I don’t get tipping. They should be paid minimum wage at least

RoomOfRequirement · 25/02/2023 12:20

I wouldn't even be waiting let alone tipping. That's awful service.

This.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 25/02/2023 14:26

I pay over £200 for cut, colour and treatments (and blow dry) and always tip £10 each to the colourist and stylist and then £5 to the junior who removes the foils and root colour and then does the toner.

However, I’d be voting with my feet in your position OP. I’d go and buy some root spray, take it to a walk in salon and ask for a blow dry - I’d get them to apply the spray for me at the end.

BuildABlah · 25/02/2023 14:28

If you MUST stay then demand they do your roots instead of the cut.

That way you can try other salons for the cut (who won't be able to do your dye job because of 24 hr patch tests)

7notrumps · 25/02/2023 14:29

Nobody gets to treat me with such distain. I’d have politely smiled and immediately left, never to return.

Hairdressers aren’t exactly thin on the ground.

Kinneddar · 25/02/2023 14:31

You just know OP will have left some kind of tip today though

@YellowAndGreenToBeSeen

a salon would have their own root spray surely?

and don’t use root spray at the end of a blow dry either

GoingOnce · 25/02/2023 14:44

Where I go they are canny about running late. They get you gowned up and sitting in the chair, tea/coffee etc and then you notice your stylist blow-drying some else hair and it’s too late to leave!

Andylion · 25/02/2023 14:46

they said they're only charging me for what I'm having done,

I bloody well hope they would only charge for what you are getting done.

@LuckySantangelo35 think the commenter means the root spray that colours the hair as she needed her roots done.

The trouble is, they're used to being over paid.

moozles · 25/02/2023 14:47

I never tip, didn’t even realise people did!

amprev · 25/02/2023 14:56

I don’t think a £20 tip is abnormal as some have suggested, and the idea of it doesn’t make me feel faint. It’s all relative isn’t it? I tip my hairdresser generously because I really value her and she makes me feel brilliant. I think she’d be the same if I didn’t tip her too, she’s just great at her job and I’m happy to pay extra to show her my appreciation. She also tells me that a few of her little old ladies who come in every week for a wash and set tip her £1 each time and that means a lot to her too.

If for some reason I had a terrible experience with her, then I wouldn’t tip.

I think your experience today is not only not tip-worthy but also walk-out worthy. I would prefer to do my own hair than pay them a penny - you’re being treated rudely.

Brightblueskysunshine · 25/02/2023 14:58

I too think twenty is a bit much. May be a fiver.

I think this is one off. May be confirm next time when you book her that she is free and not double booked . If you feel that this is an ongoing thing then I would say look elsewhere.

@TomatoSandwiches

How do you tip in McDonald's?

WisherWood · 25/02/2023 15:08

For those that still tip, that's virtually 10% so not unusual.

It's 22%. Rounding up to £100 would be fairly generous. And still (marginally) over 10%.

mirax · 25/02/2023 15:11

JackiePlace · 25/02/2023 12:50

Good grief!
£20 is 22% of £90. (20/90 X 100)
The level of math incompetence in the general public is just astounding.

Esp as 1/9 is 11%, 2/9 is 22% and is such an easy pattern for even kids.

I've been going to the same salon for years but I've never tipped, nor the girl who threads my brows. I pay the prices they set, and I am a repeat customer in there every month. I'm very happy with the service and they really are lovely people, but I think sometimes tipping is unnecessary in this country. We already pay a decent amount for the services we receive, anything extra is not needed. I wouldn't tip in Mcdonald's, a bus driver, or an amazon driver, etc. I worked retail for years and never got tipped. It's not a case of "I didn't get anything why should you" but I fear we will be like America soon. People will be afraid not to tip, but not getting the service we pay for in the first place.

Absolutely this.

I don't tip my hairdresser, never have. I love him, been going 10 years but he's the owner and has FAR more money than I do (big house in an affluent area etc). He's getting 100% of my payment. He gives me a Xmas present of a posh shampoo, so I don't think he's annoyed.

I don't tip taxi drivers either. I don't want to be the US.

Maireas · 25/02/2023 15:17

I agree about the USA, and tipping is too often used as a reason by employers not to pay better wages.

Puffalicious · 25/02/2023 15:18

Also, the apprentice being poorly paid is not unusual. They're learning whilst on the job, like all apprentices. DS2's friend was just telling me today that he earns £4.56 an hour as an apprentice heating and plumbing engineer- age 17. He gets £200 a week for long hours. The point is both jobs will have a trade within 3 years with potential to earn well.

How do you tip in McDonald's?

I explained afterwards I pop money in the charity box there as the staff can't take tips.
