To not tip hairdresser?

My appointment was at 11:45. I'm still waiting to be seen. My hairdresser has also said they're unable to do what I booked as they're double booked, so can only do half of what I want (have to leave my roots and can't dye). I always, always tip at hairdressers and restaurants, I usually give her £20 tip for a £90 appointment but I'm really annoyed, I'm going out tonight and wanted my roots and colour done, plus I'm still waiting to actually be seen. I booked for roots, dye, haircut and blow dry, but they are only able to do cut and blow dry. AIBU if I don't tip today? I feel bad but I'm really annoyed at the same time.

(And he's gone out I was meant to say)

You're paying for the service they provide, they're not doing you a favour out of the goodness of their hearts, you don't need to feel grateful to them or pay 20-30% more because they fulfilled the transaction.

Today I'd leave, get a blow-dry elsewhere.

@MelchiorsMistress I did kind of say about that I'm not getting what I booked and they said they're only charging me for what I'm having done, which does cost less because it's not what I booked!

It's about the inconvenience of having to book another appointment, taking more time out of your schedule and the attitude to me, if they were apologetic about THEIR mistake it wouldn't put my hackles up but they act like they are still doing you a favour.

No tip!

@Garman I don't know really, I just feel grateful for the service they provide which is usually good.

That's what you're already paying £90 for

Honestly why stay? You’ll end up paying for a blow dry as well when you get your colour done.

I agree.

I wouldn't be hanging around waiting to be squeezed in for a cut and blow dry.

When a salon takes the mickey out of you as a customer, vote with your feet. Don't be so passive.

80sMum · 25/02/2023 12:32

You normally give a £20 tip for a £90 appointment? Good God!! Why?

If they want you to pay £110 and not £90 then they need to charge you £110!

I strongly suggest that you take your custom to a different hairdressing business and then start as you mean to go on, i.e. no more tipping!

Epicstorm · 25/02/2023 12:33

They don’t even sound apologetic. They’ll know you’re a OTT tipper so it should really hit home if you don’t tip at all. I’d be walking out anyway and telling them exactly why. Think at the very least your cut and blow ought to be free.

For those that still tip, that's virtually 10% so not unusual.

And if the stylist doesn't own the salon she won't be getting £90. Salons often take a high percentage of each appt + chair rent if the stylist is self-employed

Maireas · 25/02/2023 12:37

I never tip the hairdresser.
Their rates are quite high enough.

Do you actually know what the stylist earns from doing your hair? (Just curious)

BrilliantUsername · 25/02/2023 12:39

I've never tipped a hairdresser, I've never tipped anyone. I don't get tips for my job.

No. Do you know what I earn?
The Amazon driver?
Doctor's receptionist?
Train driver?

RebeccaCloud9 · 25/02/2023 12:41

Holy shit are you made of money?! Also, you tip that much regularly and they still treat you with bad service like that? Time to get a new hairdresser.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 25/02/2023 12:41

I also nearly fainted at your £20 tip - that’s really OTT.
with that kind of tipping history, I’d expect them to be rolling out the red carpet for you and throwing rose petals at your feet, not leaving you waiting for 45 mins

Quite. I'm paying £75 to have my hair cut. That's enough.

Viviennemary · 25/02/2023 12:42

How is it virtually 10%? A 10% tip on a £90 appointment would be £9. Anyway its far far too much. And hasnt done OP any good as she has been treated really badly.

£20 is not 10% of £90

The train driver will be the highest paid out of that list.

Most stylists don't earn a fortune. Especially since covid

whoamitojudge · 25/02/2023 12:44

I hope you’ve left by now

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 25/02/2023 12:44

Text him and meet somewhere?
I wouldn't waste anymore time on double-booking hairdressers - you need a new salon.

Because my maths was really bad!

And I do agree it's way too much. They clearly don't know how to value good customers and the OP should vote with her feet next time.

Be interesting to see what the stylist has to say when she finally gets around to the OP

A £20 tip on a £90 bill is over 20%, that's not 'virtually 10%'.

JackiePlace · 25/02/2023 12:46

Personally I would not be willing to wait. Just say to receptionist that you'll have to come back another day as you have another appointment to get to.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 25/02/2023 12:47

I bet if you kept THEM waiting for over half an hour they'd have no problem cancelling!

Actually, I'm the highest paid.
It's not my job to pay extra for services. I will if it's waiting staff because that's usually a tough job on a minimum wage. I'm not going to tip a woman who drives a sports car and owns three salons.
