To not tip hairdresser?

My appointment was at 11:45. I'm still waiting to be seen. My hairdresser has also said they're unable to do what I booked as they're double booked, so can only do half of what I want (have to leave my roots and can't dye). I always, always tip at hairdressers and restaurants, I usually give her £20 tip for a £90 appointment but I'm really annoyed, I'm going out tonight and wanted my roots and colour done, plus I'm still waiting to actually be seen. I booked for roots, dye, haircut and blow dry, but they are only able to do cut and blow dry. AIBU if I don't tip today? I feel bad but I'm really annoyed at the same time.

The root touch up is a lost cause now but you might get a C&BW somewhere, there might be a cancellation...leave! They're treating you poorly and if you have a long standing relationship with this salon and tip (over generously IMHO) you'd think they'd be more respectful of your custom. If you do stay no bloody tip this time and find a better salon for the future.

For those that tip all the time regardless…

those who can’t afford to tip, should they just not get their hair done in your view? Like when some people say that if you can’t afford to tip waiting staff you shouldn’t be eating out

I grew up very poor, lived in a refuge, didn't have much of anything for all of my childhood and once I was able to work at 14 I did at every opportunity and not always in well paying jobs.

I haven't always had the means to tip either and would never think to judge anyone who couldn't at all.
I can now and I really appreciate good service, so I tip and or express my gratitude in other ways like good feedback etc.

StaceyMeloni · 25/02/2023 13:16

That tip is madness. I only tip in restaurants when the service has been really good.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/02/2023 13:16

No I put money in the charity box at McDonald's as like you've said, you can't tip the staff.

Reinventinganna · 25/02/2023 13:16

Op, I tip like you. Although the difference is that I am tipping well because of great service!
I live in fear that my hairdresser might leave or something and I love her. She is worth every penny.

starfishmummy · 25/02/2023 13:17

I'd have walked out. I've had good basic trims at those walk in no appointment places, or if you didn't want to risk a cut, they'll usually still do a wash and blow dry.

And then find a new hairdresser.

Nanny0gg · 25/02/2023 13:18

Maireas · 25/02/2023 12:47

Actually, I'm the highest paid.
It's not my job to pay extra for services. I will if it's waiting staff because that's usually a tough job on a minimum wage. I'm not going to tip a woman who drives a sports car and owns three salons.

Nor would I. But that's the salon owner not the stylist.

So it depends which one does your hair

Calphurnia88 · 25/02/2023 13:20

Nanny0gg · 25/02/2023 12:37

For those that still tip, that's virtually 10% so not unusual.

And if the stylist doesn't own the salon she won't be getting £90. Salons often take a high percentage of each appt + chair rent if the stylist is self-employed

It's 22%.

AlwaysGinPlease · 25/02/2023 13:22

I would cancel the appointment and find a new salon. That's ridiculous.

Scarlettpixie · 25/02/2023 13:22

I don’t tip my hairdresser. The other day for a cut and colour I paid £120. I feel that is enough and expect/believe she charges what she thinks is the right price for the service. I really like her and am very happy with my hair but I just couldn’t afford to tip her. I already go less often than I would like because of how much it costs.

I have a friend who always tips a fiver and goes every 5 weeks but her hairdresser charges half what mine does.

RemoteControlDoobry · 25/02/2023 13:23

Well you’ll end up paying much more because you’ll have to rebook for the dye and then have another blow dry.

This.

I would either walk or insist that on my subsequent appt I only pay for the colour (because of their error).

ijustneedanamefgs · 25/02/2023 13:30

I would be expecting it hugely discounted, not leaving a tip

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 25/02/2023 13:31

Oh jeez, that sounds like my hairdressers, where Time Has No Meaning. They semi-regularly do this, without even acknowledging it. I like my own hairdresser, and she's good, and it's walkable, and a reasonable price for the area. Without those things, I'd take my custom elsewhere. If I've been messed about lots, I don't tip.

EllieM27 · 25/02/2023 13:31

I certainly wouldn’t tip in this situation as they haven’t provided good service. I’d continue tipping in general though and don’t think your tip is unusual. I also always tipped stylists £20-25 when I was in the UK. Now that I’m in the US I tip anywhere from $50-100 (~£42-85) depending on what I’m having done, even though stylists here make more money even before tips. I’m happy to do it as they deserve extra for their skill, and also because getting in with the best stylists in an area can be competitive and I want to keep them. 😂

Nixynic · 25/02/2023 13:39

I’m a generous tipper for my hair/beauty appointments, because I think it’s nice if you can afford to. But also because it means that the salon knows I am a good tipper and so will give me priority for a short notice appointment, or in situations like you find yourself in today. So I would be pretty annoyed if I were you. Personally I would ask to speak to the Manager and politely explain my annoyance that I had been waiting so long and also been told I couldn’t have what I had pre-booked. I would expect a small discount on what you’re having today and a booking for the other missed services in the very near future.

JaffaCake70 · 25/02/2023 13:42

criedariver · 25/02/2023 12:23

@Nanny0gg I did on their app, have done so a few times in the past with no issues and booked the thing I needed.

I don't see how there can be a double booking if you have booked on an app? Surely once the slot is taken no one else can be booked in for that particular stylist for that slot?

So to add to the already shoddy service, I think they are lying to you and have just fallen behind and are trying to make up time by not delivering the service that you booked in for.
'
Definitely no tip, and definitely find another salon. I'd have walked out after 15 - 20 min's wait to be honest.

Whatifitallgoesright · 25/02/2023 13:45

Wow, wished people tipped me like that for doing their cleaning.

samsam123 · 25/02/2023 13:45

Why tip anyway? people dont tip me for doing my job so why do some jobs get tipped. Sure she earns enough

EarthSight · 25/02/2023 13:47

Why do you tip when you're already paying for the service?? It isn't like they're doing it for free for you!

Sassysia · 25/02/2023 13:48

SallyWD · 25/02/2023 12:25

£20 tip?! I thought I was generous by giving a fiver!

I know me too and my hair costs more than £90! A 22% tip is unreal!!

MoreSleepPleasee · 25/02/2023 13:49

You should have left. They are going to rush to get you out as quick as possible to move on to the client they value more. They should ring to cancel the one after you, who is not there yet. Not you who has been waiting 45 mins. So rude of them.

Regularsizedrudy · 25/02/2023 13:50

I have never tipped a hairdresser.

Tbh I think they are probably hoping you will just leave.

drpet49 · 25/02/2023 13:50

Garman · 25/02/2023 12:27

Why do you give such a big tip? They decide their prices there's no requirement on you to tip.

This. £20 tip is ridiculous.
