To not tip hairdresser?

My appointment was at 11:45. I'm still waiting to be seen. My hairdresser has also said they're unable to do what I booked as they're double booked, so can only do half of what I want (have to leave my roots and can't dye). I always, always tip at hairdressers and restaurants, I usually give her £20 tip for a £90 appointment but I'm really annoyed, I'm going out tonight and wanted my roots and colour done, plus I'm still waiting to actually be seen. I booked for roots, dye, haircut and blow dry, but they are only able to do cut and blow dry. AIBU if I don't tip today? I feel bad but I'm really annoyed at the same time.

For those that still tip, that's virtually 10% so not unusual.

And if the stylist doesn't own the salon she won't be getting £90. Salons often take a high percentage of each appt + chair rent if the stylist is self-employed

It’s more than 20%!!

I don’t get this tipping hairdressers. I’m regularly charged £250+. Even if hairdresser only get £100 of that, it’s a decent wage for a couple of hours work

Snoopsnoggysnog · 25/02/2023 12:43

£20 is not 10% of £90

Good grief!
£20 is 22% of £90. (20/90 X 100)
The level of math incompetence in the general public is just astounding.

PatchworkElmer · 25/02/2023 12:53

Honestly just walk out. You’ll feel rubbish with half of what you wanted- might as well save your money and book in elsewhere.

RachelGreeneGreep · 25/02/2023 12:55

I definitely would not be tipping. I understand that you want your hair to look nice for later but after this, I would be taking my custom elsewhere.

Thats overtipping imo, and unnecessary. Start as you mean to go on next time around.

LuckySantangelo35 · 25/02/2023 12:55

Yes you should still op

TomatoSandwiches · 25/02/2023 12:56

I tip £20/25 at the hairdressers, I get cut, colour and blow dry, £10 each for the colourist & stylist and if an apprentice washes my hair £5 for her as well.
I consider that fair for a good appointment since they rarely get the full amount you pay for.

LuckySantangelo35 · 25/02/2023 12:56

jokes! As if! Do you really think anyone on here is gonna say that to you?!

flabbygoldfish · 25/02/2023 12:56

My appointment was at 11:45. I'm still waiting to be seen (12.18).

I have ditched hairdressers for this sort of time keeping. It is rude, unprofessional and I would not be leaving any sort of tip.

p.s. why can they not just do the roots and cut and leave you to self dry?

Barleysugar86 · 25/02/2023 12:56

Wow thats a big tip. I tipped £3 on my £57 cut and blow dry.

But fine to not tip if they are messing you around.

£5 for someone washing you hair

lol

Newyearnewhome · 25/02/2023 12:57

I also think this story is a great argument for not tipping in the UK.

we are culturally not geared up for it. If this was in the US, they wouldn’t leave such a generous tipper waiting. I bet they’d also be doing the cut and blow dry free as there had been a mix up.

in the UK, people like to take the tips, but they don’t actually bother about providing good service.

we have a national minimum wage so that people shouldn’t have to reply on tips.

So you add £25 on to what price?
Do you also tip other service providers?

What's funny about that?

Maireas · 25/02/2023 12:59

You're right, @Newyearnewhome
It's not good.

BeckettandCastle · 25/02/2023 12:59

I never tip, ever. And I certainly would not tip for such poor service. I would not be going back there again either.

£5 is half an hour in wages and they already get paid!

Ionlydrinkondaysendinginy · 25/02/2023 12:59

No you shouldn't tip after that service. Also £20 is ridiculous id feel really uncomfortable if someone tipped me that amount it's not normal

@TomatoSandwiches

it just seems excessive

hmrcwhatnow · 25/02/2023 12:59

I think your usual tip is wild. Juniors are notoriously badly paid but your stylist should be charging and getting paid appropriately.

Do you also tip other service providers?

I tip in restaurants, even McDonalds if the children want to go there as we have previously used Ronald McDonald housing, the taxi service we regularly use, I buy a hot or cold drink for the rubbish men that clear the local park area if I am opposite the shop when they are there and I also tip the DPD delivery driver.

Fair enough, I don't mind though, I swept hair as a teenager, they get less than minimum wage.

2bazookas · 25/02/2023 13:01

Don't tip. Tell them its a special occasion.

SicParvisMagna · 25/02/2023 13:02

I've been going to the same salon for years but I've never tipped, nor the girl who threads my brows. I pay the prices they set, and I am a repeat customer in there every month. I'm very happy with the service and they really are lovely people, but I think sometimes tipping is unnecessary in this country. We already pay a decent amount for the services we receive, anything extra is not needed. I wouldn't tip in Mcdonald's, a bus driver, or an amazon driver, etc. I worked retail for years and never got tipped. It's not a case of "I didn't get anything why should you" but I fear we will be like America soon. People will be afraid not to tip, but not getting the service we pay for in the first place.

Benjispruce4 · 25/02/2023 13:02

I never tip hairdressers. She cuts, colours and washes and dries so no poorly paid apprentice to tip. It costs an arm and a leg already so I don’t feel guilty.

RachelSq · 25/02/2023 13:02

I never tip and I’d honestly have been out of the door so quick after being left half an hour.

Only possible explanation I’d accept here is that they’ve squeezed you in with someone else because YOUR booked hairdresser was off unexpectedly.

I would absolutely not be paying for half a job - you’ll need the touch up done soon anyway and you didn’t book for the half job!
