To not tip hairdresser?

My appointment was at 11:45. I'm still waiting to be seen. My hairdresser has also said they're unable to do what I booked as they're double booked, so can only do half of what I want (have to leave my roots and can't dye). I always, always tip at hairdressers and restaurants, I usually give her £20 tip for a £90 appointment but I'm really annoyed, I'm going out tonight and wanted my roots and colour done, plus I'm still waiting to actually be seen. I booked for roots, dye, haircut and blow dry, but they are only able to do cut and blow dry. AIBU if I don't tip today? I feel bad but I'm really annoyed at the same time.

I tip £20/25 at the hairdressers, I get cut, colour and blow dry, £10 each for the colourist & stylist and if an apprentice washes my hair £5 for her as well.
I consider that fair for a good appointment since they rarely get the full amount you pay for.

I think this is mad.

Do you tip waitresses, postal workers, teachers?

IfIGoThereWillBeTrouble · 25/02/2023 13:03

Please tell me you’ve been seen by now? What time did they finally deign to serve you?

I know you wanted your hair done before you go out tonight, but I’d have left after waiting 15 minutes. In fact, as they couldn’t provide all that you booked for, I’d have left straight away.

bear in mind that if you had cancelled your appointment or reduced the services you had originally booked for, they would have charged you a cancellation fee.

if there’s a Supercuts in your town, go there and sit and wait, or see if any other salons had a standby appointment. I wouldn’t go back to the first hairdresser.

£20 tip ???? 😮

I don't mean to drip feed but DP and I only have one key atm, I lost mine a few weeks ago and told him I'd be out until 3:30 so I can't actually go home.

Is he using the time to get another key cut? Use the tip money to have another couple of keys cut!

LuckySantangelo35 · 25/02/2023 13:03

For those that tip all the time regardless…

those who can’t afford to tip, should they just not get their hair done in your view? Like when some people say that if you can’t afford to tip waiting staff you shouldn’t be eating out

TedMullins · 25/02/2023 13:04

I never tip hairdressers even if they do exactly what I want! They’re expensive enough as it is. I’d complain and walk out in this situation.

@Viviennemary I've even done £30 before for a good service here!

My last haircut cost less than that 😄

GoodChat · 25/02/2023 13:04

It sounds like they triple or quadrupled booked you in all honesty. I'd have left and gone to a walk in salon if there's one nearby.

NoInvitesEver · 25/02/2023 13:04

Definitely no tip. I also very much doubt they've genuinely and accidentally double booked - more likely they've squeezed someone in at last minute who they prioritise over you.

ThinWomansBrain · 25/02/2023 13:04

I'd have left by midday - and spent the fifteen minutes I'd been kept waiting leaving a review on google.

bellabasset · 25/02/2023 13:04

Don't tip, rebook and them next time deduct the cost of this appointment and find another hairdresser.

I did post before and yes I tip good service for other providers, for Teachers I pop a supermarket voucher in a card at Christmas and end of year with some wine and sweets since they probably don't need another best teach mug.

I tip in restaurants, even McDonalds if the children want to go there as we have previously used Ronald McDonald housing, the taxi service we regularly use, I buy a hot or cold drink for the rubbish men that clear the local park area if I am opposite the shop when they are there and I also tip the DPD delivery driver.

@TomatoSandwiches

I bet the staff in McDonald’s can’t believe it when you tip! I have never ever heard of anyone tipping in McDonald’s.

MavisMcMinty · 25/02/2023 13:05

I tip my hairdresser because it feels obligatory to do so. I only ever have a wet cut, so there’s no apprentice to tip for the hair wash, and my hairdresser charges between £14 and £18 per cut (I’m guessing £1 for every minute I’m in the chair), so I just tell her to keep the change from the £20 I give her. After the pandemic lockdown I gave her £25 or £30 as she must have lost a lot of income. She only accepts cash anyway, no cards or cheques, and as I’d spend £40 or £50 at any other salon for the same 15-minute appointment, I’m still winning.

A £20 tip is absurd though. Insane, even.

@TomatoSandwiches

are you very wealthy? Surely you must realise that not everyone can tip absolutely everyone whose services they pay for especially with the cost of living crisis

You can't tip in mcdonalds you may donate to the Ronald Mcdonald charity but you don't tip the staff

Moveoverdarlin · 25/02/2023 13:06

Bizarre that they’re treating such a good tipper so badly. Kind of suggests there’s no point in doing it in the first place. Really shoddy to not give you the service you wanted and also poor to keep you waiting. I wouldn’t pay full price for whatever treatment your getting done. I would insist on the colour being done and forgo the cut.

DDivaStar · 25/02/2023 13:06

No I wouldn't tip and I would ask for a free blowdry when you rebook the colour for the inconvenience.

Its not good but mistakes do happen, if you've not had any issues before I'd stick with them

rookiemere · 25/02/2023 13:07

Absolutely no tip OP and I'd likely message them after the event to say how disappointed you were, you might get some vouchers for future use.

2chocolateoranges · 25/02/2023 13:07

I would stay and get the cut and blow dry done if I had booked for my roots to be done, I’d be leaving and trying every local salon .

shit customer service. Not your problem they didn’t control their booking system.

That should say I wouldn’t stay!

FallonofDynasty · 25/02/2023 13:08

No tip!

I've been given a reduction on the charge for this sort of thing - being delayed, in the past.

rookiemere · 25/02/2023 13:09

NB for a while after lockdown I was the world's best tipper, but then they closed again because of a new lockdown and as I didn't have an existing appointment they then couldn't see me for about a month.

After that I've been a bit more circumspect with the tips, except for the time I didn't have my glasses on and gave £20 rather than £10.

Blip · 25/02/2023 13:09

Appalling customer service OP.
I'd tell them that their customer service and general attitude is dreadful and that you won't be going back.

Blip · 25/02/2023 13:10

Or ask for free root touch up another time
