To say this is average size?

5'3 and 8 and a half stone.
Would you say that is average and not 'tiny?'

OP posts:
HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 24/02/2023 16:39

The link posted upthread actually says the average is a whisker under 5'5".

My DD is 5'3" and is the second shortest of her friends. I would definitely say someone 5'3" is short.

Why do you care OP?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/02/2023 16:41

Well yes you are shorter than average. And although a healthy unremarkable weight, probably weigh less than the average woman, esp these days.

So I’m not sure what you want people to say?

KirstenBlest · 24/02/2023 16:41

The mean height of men and women has generally increased in England. According to the survey, the average height of males rose slightly during the period in consideration from 174.4 centimeters in 1998 to 175.9 centimeters in 2021. While, mean height of women was 162.4 centimeters in 2021, up from 161 in 1998.

@Changingnametime , petite clothes ranges are usually for 5'3" and under or 5'2" and under. I'm average height and just a little too tall for them.

Petite doesn't refer to someone of a dainty build.

Generally, young people are taller than the generations before them, but people are living longer, and people shrink as they get older. If you took the average of women's height excluding children and the elderly, the average would be higher/taller.

@LocalHobo , 8.5 stones would not be skinny on me (5'4"). I'm towards the lower end of BMI and am definitely not skinny, thin or dainty. I'd be fat at the top end of the BMI range.

Yes, average height is 5’3”. I know what petite means. The OP is average height of women in the UK. Average women’s height includes the elderly of course, but I am sure it doesn’t include children. That would distort statistics massively.

A colleague told me I looked unhealthily skinny and it embarrassed me. I don't think I am which is why I am asking.

Tell your colleague to fuck off with her/his personal remarks.

If that doesn't make you feel better, book an appointment with the nurse at your GP surgery, & ask her to give you a health check & nutritional advice.

Although as PP have mentioned you seem to encounter an awful lot of adverse commentary from your colleagues, maybe you either need a change of job, or to reframe the way you respond to the human inevitability of the odd asinine comment.

The OP is not shorter than average… She is average.

Kennykenkencat · 24/02/2023 16:21

DD’s friends are all around 5ft 2”
I can’t think of one that is over about 5ft 3”

In my experience younger are taller, older ladies shorter - giving average of 5 ft 3. I’m 5ft 8 and lots of my daughter’s friends are taller than me. It obviously varies based on ethnic background too.

weatherthestorms · 24/02/2023 16:45

I'd say that's petite. I'm that size and get told all the time I'm 'Short' like it's some bloody revelation! Like telling someone who's 6'4 they're tall...

KirstenBlest · 24/02/2023 16:45

162.4 cm is one sixteenth of an inch shorter than 5'4"

The mean height is the height of all women divided by the number of women.
The average 35 yr old height will probably be much taller than the average 75 yr old.

Nousernamesleftatall · 24/02/2023 16:45

5 foot 4 inches is average height for women.

i would say your weight is just fine, not too skinny but probably below average as their is an obesity crisis.

Nocutenamesleft · 24/02/2023 16:46

Eh?

im that height and weight and no way am I tiny!!!

im absolutely boringly average. Which is what you are I’m sure.

I would literally blend into the crowd and wouldn’t stand out.

wouldn't make a post about it though…..even if someone called me tiny or fat. Because it wouldn’t even register on my radar.

😂

Rude of them

SirenSays · 24/02/2023 16:47

Healthy average, pay no attention to them. I've had ex colleagues say the same to me. It's likely just jealousy

KirstenBlest · 24/02/2023 16:47

This, but use a more palatable term than 'Fuck off'

Hellybelly84 · 24/02/2023 16:47

Yes its exactly what you should be for your height/weight in terms of BMI. Obviously you cant tell from Mumsnet if you have a healthy lifestyle, but in medical terms, you fall into the perfect weight for your height. Im simlar to you.

For your height you are bang on weight wise so I assume you look healthily slim.

PinkRiceKrispies · 24/02/2023 15:43

Creepy you have searched through all my posts @Gwen82 but OK...

Tip: good idea to regularly name change because people will regularly do 'research' on you or just 'notice'

Icaughtuadeliciousbass · 24/02/2023 16:51

I'm 5ft 2 and 8stone is perfectly average. Boringly so. Other women at work call me skinny and make constant digs too. They frequently say I look unhealthy and put food on my desk.

When i was pregnant they laughed and called me a fat hippo. Literally can't win with some people.

(Same colleagues who went to HR about me dressing "promiscuously" in a white top, cord pinafore dress and black tights....)

Don't let them live rent free in your head x

MrFlibblesEyes · 24/02/2023 16:51

It depends on how you carry it I think. I'm the same height and weight but I currently look a little chunkier than I like because I'm narrow hipped and it goes around my waist. I look best at between 8-8st 4 in my eyes! Definitely don't look skinny even at 8st.

Okunevo · 24/02/2023 16:53

LocalHobo · 24/02/2023 16:14

Eight and a half stone sounds skinny to me- just checked round the 6 women I'm with and none of us are under 10 stone. However we are all 5ft 7 or taller and all over 40.
It's all subjective isn't it?

It wouldn't be skinny for the vast majority of women who are 5ft 3 as it's a bmi of 21. Maybe on a woman with a large build.

80sMum · 24/02/2023 16:54

Unfortunately, as such a large percentage of the population is overweight, I doubt that it's average these days.

It is, of course, definitely not "tiny" in that it's a perfectly acceptable and healthy weight for that height.

But perhaps the description of "tiny" was referring to height and not weight? 5' 3" is quite small these days. Most young people seem to be taller now.

Zippy1510 · 24/02/2023 16:54

I’m surprised size 16 is now considered average. I would say you are more petite than average OP- but not at an unhealthy level. Not that it matters we are all different shapes and sizes.

Stravaig · 24/02/2023 16:55

Average height for a woman in the UK is 5ft 3, so your height is average.

Average weight for a woman in the UK is 11 st, so your weight of 8.5 stone is well below average. However 60% of women in the UK are overweight or obese.

Your height/weight combo is in the middle of the healthy BMI range, which is excellent.

If you feel healthy, and your doctor is happy, then I'd ignore any derogatory comments. Public perception of what is a healthy weight has warped, and levels of denial increase every day.

There's no reason to be embarrassed. Your colleague is rude, it's not for them (or anyone really) to pass comment on your weight.
