To say this is average size?

5'3 and 8 and a half stone.
Would you say that is average and not 'tiny?'

OP posts:

I’m 5 ft 3 and 8 stones size 8. I don’t think I’m average height. I’m shortest out of all my female colleagues. I also don’t consider myself skinny. I consider myself slim. Therefore no, I don’t think you’re tiny or skinny.

But what you “think” doesn’t matter. The facts are clear and proven. Average height for a woman in the UK is 5’3”.

Icaughtuadeliciousbass · 25/02/2023 08:03

5ft 3 is definitely average here. All the women I know are this height or a bit shorter (5ft 2)

When we meet up and take photos we're all the same ish height. Nobody taller!

The mums and Grans on the school run are all roughly this height. Teachers too.

So possibly it's a regional thing? I'd say that 5ft 3 is bang on average here

Changingnametime · 25/02/2023 08:05

KirstenBlest · 24/02/2023 18:00

@Changingnametime , it's nearer 5'4".

It’s 161.6cm, which is 5 foot, 3.622 inches, just over three and a half inches - I suppose technically just a bit closer to four inches.

Stravaig · 25/02/2023 09:35

PinkRiceKrispies · 24/02/2023 15:37

A colleague told me I looked unhealthily skinny and it embarrassed me. I don't think I am which is why I am asking.

Warm, friendly smile.

'Gosh, really? That's a bit worrying. Let's just check, shall we?'

Pull up the NHS BMI calculator. Enter your stats.

'Ok, this shows I'm in the middle of the healthy range. That's good!
Shall we try yours as well?'

Either your colleague will offer her height and weight, and confront that she is overweight or obese (I assume); or she knows she's being a bleeeeep and will shut up from now on.

BogRollBOGOF · 25/02/2023 10:16

5'3" tends to be shorter than average, particularly for younger age groups. For 60+ it would be more average.

8.5 stones is a healthy weight for that height, and proportionate.

It is a smaller than average build, but the average is to be overweight. Adults of healthy BMIs are outnumbered by those being overweight or obese. Some people have a skewed idea of what "slim" is.

Skinny used to mean "skin and bone" and being underweight, not slim. it also reminds me of congealed school custard It's not a flattering word.

Okay - you’re obviously gorgeous. There. Is that what you needed to hear? 🙄

So many defensive people on here.

ZaZathecat · 25/02/2023 10:29

Regarding average height, it's going to depend on the demographic. Average for all women in the UK may be 5'3" as it's taking into account all the older generation. Average height for say 20-40 year olds would be taller.

Probably! These types of threads are so tiresome. Yes you're amazing and all these fat horrible women are incredibly jealous of you.

heldup · 25/02/2023 11:18

Depends if you live in a poor or wealthy area. Wealthy area, average - verging on overweight. Poor area uou probably look underweight as the average is obese.

Why is it so offensive to you that the OP is a normal weight and height?

MrsMurphyIWish · 25/02/2023 11:31

Is 5’ 3” really the average height of a woman? I’m 5’ 7” and consider myself average. In fact, I’m the shortest out of all the women I know.

MrsMurphyIWish · 25/02/2023 11:33

Wouldn’t you have to shop in the petite range at 5’ 3” which suggests to me that’s not average? At my height I don’t even have to shop in the tall range.

I’m fascinated!

NellietheElephantpackedhertrunks · 25/02/2023 11:34

Kinda fat, TBH. But then, I only weigh 2.5 stone and I feel HUGE (a roast chicken with a spoonful of veg feeds me for a full month usually but am going to cut down my portions in half).

How does this inane comment even vaguely relate to the OP’s post?

Read the OP and then see if you can spot a joke when you read one.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/02/2023 11:41

"These are searchable statistics (from 2010). The average female height in the UK is 5’3”."

That's probably for all ages including little old ladies.
If OP is young or early middle aged she's probably shorter than other women her age.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/02/2023 11:43

"So possibly it's a regional thing? I'd say that 5ft 3 is bang on average here"

Wow. I'm that height and I'm definitely shorter than other women my age.
Elderly women are shorter of course, both because we shrink and because in general previous generations were a bit shorter.
I'm curious about where you live.

I have. There’s no joke. Her height is completely average. Her weight is not tiny in the least - it’s an excellent weight for her height - though it is below average.

Depends on leg length. 5ft 4 family member is taller than me seated, short legs. 5ft friend has regular length legs.

Well, yes, of course it includes adult women of all ages. That’s what average means. I think this thread is revealing just how invisible middle-aged and elderly women are.

I really don't understand this. How is boastful to be a normal weight and to say someone has been making rude comments about it?

People do make rude comments about it all the time. Like yourself, just now.

I just don't get what purpose this serves for you.

StClare101 · 25/02/2023 11:53

I’m genuinely surprised about 5 foot 3 bring the average height.

I’m 5 foot 6 and certainly don’t feel taller than most.

StClare101 · 25/02/2023 11:56

Just looked up Australian stats and it’s the same - average height and weight 161 cm and 71.1 kilos.

I’m so surprised by the height.
