5'3 and 8 and a half stone.
Would you say that is average and not 'tiny?'

SouthernDrawl · 24/02/2023 15:43

But you know it’s not skinny so tell her that. 🤷🏻‍♀️

PinkRiceKrispies · 24/02/2023 15:43

Creepy you have searched through all my posts @Gwen82 but OK...

OP posts:
DrManhattan · 24/02/2023 15:44

No you are massive 🙄

Stellaris22 · 24/02/2023 15:44

Hmm, maybe people need to read @Gwen82 posts before replying to OP.

I'm tall so to me it sounds tiny

Bamboo4 · 24/02/2023 15:45

@Ashleighz88 " I'd get this constantly in work, I'm 5'3 and 8 and a half stone. All bigger and older women would comment "I need to eat something" or "you'll fall through the grid". I'd have probably been sacked if I commented on how their bigger weight was unhealthy."

I find the opposite, the older women at work would lament their slimness in youth and praise being skinny in your 20s and 30s because you'll gain weight with children and menopause. They are the first ones to encourage dieting and moan about donuts at work. The young colleagues are more about curves, thick thighs and booty and body positivity.

Swiftswatch · 24/02/2023 15:46

I would imagine 8.5 stone at that height is about a size 10 or so, not particularly tiny but slim to some and obviously smaller than the average nowadays which is about a 16 I think.

Ashleighz88 · 24/02/2023 15:48

@Bamboo4 maybe it's certain industries then. Definitely not my experience. I'd personally rather be more curvy, so it's quite insulting to be thin shamed.

Thesystemonlydreamsintotaldarkness · 24/02/2023 15:48

It's not average. But it's definitely a healthy weight for your height.

A size 16 would not be a healthy size. I say that as a size 18

Bamboo4 · 24/02/2023 15:49

I think most women seem size 10 to 16uk here with some smaller and bigger sizes but in the demographics of the UK, I wouldn't say you're tiny, just average slim.

However, there are people who have very skinny limbs or really slim narrow face and that can exaggerate the appearance of being tiny when you are just a healthy weight.

Shellingbynight · 24/02/2023 15:49

Many sources still say 5'3 is the average height for a woman in the UK which is surprising, thought it'd be taller. We seem to be a short nation.

www.ukpopulation.org/average-female-height/

I'm 5'3 and at 8 and a half stone I'd be a size 8-10, not tiny IMO. But I used to have a friend who was 6ft tall and she thought I was tiny, so I suppose it depends on your perspective.

A colleague told me I looked unhealthily skinny and it embarrassed me. I don't think I am which is why I am asking.

I've had this before and it is annoying (they wouldn't say it about me any more though since having DDBlushBlushBlush). Was in a communal work kitchen with a few ladies I worked with and they were talking about diets and one turned to me (I was much younger and she a little older) and said she just wanted to fatten me up, force feed me burgers because I looked so skinny. It wasn't nice. It can be embarrassing. I had disordered eating and that sort of body talk wasn't good for my head. Let's all just agree not to talk about other people's bodies if we don't know them that well, eh?

Ignore them, OP. Try and take the compliment, being skinny is apparently a "good thing" and was likely intended as a compliment. But yes, it does feel a little like you're fishing right now.

Okunevo · 24/02/2023 15:51

It's a healthy weight for your height, near the middle of the healthy range for bmi. However, middle of the healthy bmi range and average for the UK are not the same thing. Your height would put you on the cusp of petite sizes. Based on that I would consider you a small woman. Your colleague is very rude.

Doliveira · 24/02/2023 15:53

Some people think orange is red. Some people call purple mauve.

eh.

Do you feel average?
Are you happy being average?
Would you like to be more than or less than average?
Would you like average as your pronoun?

FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks · 24/02/2023 15:56

It should be, but we have an obesity crisis in this country and a “body positivity” movement that’s hindering any attempt to fix it.

bellac11 · 24/02/2023 15:57

Changingnametime · 24/02/2023 15:40

These are searchable statistics (from 2010). The average female height in the UK is 5’3”. Average female weight is 11 stone.

You are average height, but less than average weight. But your weight is very healthy and is definitely not “tiny”. The average weight is too much overweight.

That is very interesting. I thought the average height was around 5'5. Im 5'6

WimpoleHat · 24/02/2023 15:57

Oh - I’m a very similar size to you. This drives me mad too. Petite, obviously, but absolutely not skinny at all. You’re just a healthy weight for your height. Average? No, as most people are overweight these days. But a perfectly normal size.

not surprising given the number you’ve started

I was a size 8 at 5ft 1.5 and 8.5 stone.

IWasFunBeforeMum · 24/02/2023 15:59

You're not allowed to be slim and tall on Mumsnet OP 😂

bananafishbones1 · 24/02/2023 15:59

PinkRiceKrispies · 24/02/2023 15:37

A colleague told me I looked unhealthily skinny and it embarrassed me. I don't think I am which is why I am asking.

I'm your height and a fairly small build. 8.5 stone is my ideal weight - at that weight I looked slim, but not under weight. (Wish I was that weight now 😂)

I was ill and went down to 7.5 stone and that did look underweight for me.

bellac11 · 24/02/2023 16:00

If the average height is 5'3, why are trouser lengths so bloody long. Im much taller than that, and everything is way way too long.

Leg length would vary. I'm 5'5 and trousers are a good length on me, occasionally they need a turn up but usually fine.
