5'3 and 8 and a half stone.
Would you say that is average and not 'tiny?'

A colleague told me I looked unhealthily skinny and it embarrassed me. I don't think I am which is why I am asking.

Well that's just rude of her.

ifonly4 · 24/02/2023 16:04

I wouldn't say there is an average, and even if there were we'd all be different. As long as you feel happy with yourself, have enough energy to do whatever and eat sensibly I wouldn't worry about it.

Many sources still say 5'3 is the average height for a woman in the UK which is surprising, thought it'd be taller. We seem to be a short nation.

www.ukpopulation.org/average-female-height/

I'm 5'3 and at 8 and a half stone I'd be a size 8-10, not tiny IMO. But I used to have a friend who was 6ft tall and she thought I was tiny, so I suppose it depends on your perspective.

That link says the average female height is closer to 5'5 than 5'3, which I can believe.

I'm nearly 50 and 5'7 and when I was a teenager/early 20s, I almost never saw a woman who was taller than me, so it was something I really noticed when I did.

However, now women are definitely taller on average and I know/see lots of younger women who are noticeably taller than I am. 5'10 to 6' isn't particularly remarkable.

Which is probably why trousers have got longer and more shoes in sizes 8 and 9 are available. When I was younger, long length trousers were only just long enough for me - they had to be 32" but they were often 31" which were too short. Now regular length is sometimes 32" so long enough.

Predictably we only get to reply number 4 before someone starts with the "we've lost sight of..." comments. Clearly we haven't lost sight of it, no chance of that, someone will always come along and remind us.

rothbury · 24/02/2023 16:07

No not at all. I am 5 ft 5 and was still a size ten when I weighed 8 stone 3.

You do appear to have a lot of issues with your workmates though 😂

As a nation we have absolutely lost sight of what a healthy weight is, otherwise we wouldn’t have an obesity crisis and a body positivity movement movement to pretend it isn’t happening.

Eh? Do you know what average means? Of course there is. There’s only one definite average. And we definitely couldn’t all be different. That makes no sense. It’s maths, not personal opinion.

BananaLlamaFarmer · 24/02/2023 16:09

Hello. I’m 5’2 and about 8.5 stone. I’m a size 10 or 12. before Christmas, I exercised and went down to just above 8 stone. I looked about average then and fitted well into clothes. However, I fallen off the wagon and have indulged in too much chocolate and crisps since then, and stopped exercising, so I could do with losing that half stone again because I have a muffin top/pot belly that doesn’t go away very easily!

Gwen82 · 24/02/2023 16:10

I always think on such threads that it would be interesting if a requirement to post was to confirm truthfully your own weight and height.

I suspect it would put in to context a number of the posts!

Dixiechickonhols · 24/02/2023 16:11

5 ft 3 is average uk female height but that obviously includes all age groups. If you and colleagues are younger age group it probably seems on small side.

It is petite in comparison to the average British woman. I am shorter than you and I am definitely considered small. Like you, my BMI is in the middle of the healthy range and I think I am considered on the slim side for my age (mid 50s) but I wouldn't describe myself as skinny. Just built on a slightly smaller scale than the average.

KirstenBlest · 24/02/2023 16:13

That sound about right to me.
The average height is just over 5'3"
8.5 st is within the normal weight according to BMI

Alwayswonderedwhy · 24/02/2023 16:14

It's a healthy weight so probably not average as so many people are overweight. It's definitely not tiny.
I'm 5ft 2 and look my best at just under 8.5 stone. Sadly I'm way over that now.

LocalHobo · 24/02/2023 16:14

Eight and a half stone sounds skinny to me- just checked round the 6 women I'm with and none of us are under 10 stone. However we are all 5ft 7 or taller and all over 40.
It's all subjective isn't it?

It’s not petite compared to the average British woman! It is average. Average is 5’3” , which is the OP’s height.

3WildOnes · 24/02/2023 16:15

I've had people say similar to me too. It is so rude. I'm slim but I am a healthy weight. Even if I wasn't a healthy weight it would still be rude to comment. I dont go around calling people fat so don't call me skinny.

You just suddenly asked 6 women their weight?

A colleague told me I looked unhealthily skinny and it embarrassed me. I don't think I am which is why I am asking.

I take it she was fat and was trying to make herself feel better by putting you down?

Kennykenkencat · 24/02/2023 16:17

Just because the average is size 16 it doesn’t make it healthy.

Having worked in offices I had plenty of people who called me all sorts and asked or commented on things that were inappropriate

Get a group together and you can have a list of people who don’t like you for obscure reasons and you don’t like them because if it.

Bamboux · 24/02/2023 16:18

It's not tiny, skinny or underweight, no. I weigh 8 - 8.5 stone when I relapse into my ED, but I'm 5 ft 8, so 5 inches taller than you.

Currently I weigh 9.5 stone and don't feel tiny at all.

SealHouse · 24/02/2023 16:21

You are the perfect weight for your height. Just because most people are obese doesn't make it right. Report the person to HR for body-shaming - you'd sure as hell be the bad guy if you told your colleague they were "unhealthily fat" (which I'm guessing the person is)

DD’s friends are all around 5ft 2”
I can’t think of one that is over about 5ft 3”

xsquared · 24/02/2023 16:21

OP, 5'3" is below average height for UK women, amd 8.5 stone isn't average, I suppose its within your BMI.

Average UK dress size is 16.

Pay no attention to your colleague. It's been a while since I've had sizist comments directed at me, being 5'2" myself. Those who did were the type of people who needed to prop themselves up by tearing others down.

LolaSmiles · 24/02/2023 16:23

Average height I believe and within a healthy BMI range. Different people will carry weight differently depending on their frame.

Taking it at face value, your colleagues seem to have form for being very rude OP.

But this thread will inevitably turn into:

  • BMI is awful because it says some very fit rugby players are obese
  • BMI is rubbish/people are obsessed with skinniness because it says I'm overweight or obsese and I'm not much different from other people
  • OP claiming they had no idea they were average height and a healthy weight
