5'3 and 8 and a half stone.
Would you say that is average and not 'tiny?'

OP posts:
KirstenBlest · 24/02/2023 18:00

@Changingnametime , it's nearer 5'4".

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 24/02/2023 18:02

Agree-its nothing to do with having a ‘perfect body’, but we do need more education about what is a healthy weight for our height. Also, educating the public about the potential (highly likely!) health conditions further down the line if you are obese.

completely agree @Hellybelly84

RemoteControlDoobry · 24/02/2023 18:03

It’s a healthy weight. I’m 5’1 and nearly nine stones, size 10 and slim. At 8 stone 3lb I’m a size 8, which is what I was when younger but I do look a little bit skinny in the face these days. But I’m 50. Different people do look different at different weights though. I’m nearer to the higher end of the healthy weight range for my height but I don’t look it.

It’s just what bigger people say to smaller people.

No, for the millionth time, the OP is average for height. UK women’s average is 5’3”.

I was about to say 'nah mate that's rubbish,' but googled it, and yep. 5 ft 3 and a bit IS the average woman's height in the UK. I am shocked because most women I know, especially under 40 - are around 5 ft 5 or taller. The older a woman is, the shorter she is - (in my world.) I bet if it was 'average height of women born after say, 1990,' the average height would be taller.

SummerWinds · 24/02/2023 18:03

Why are you so invested in the opinions of others.

PurpleButterflyWings · 24/02/2023 18:06

I agree that obesity is a problem in the UK. But the very idea pushed (by SOME posters) that if you are say, 5 ft 2 to 5 ft 4, and 10-11 stone, you are FAT or OBESE, is offensive and inaccurate.

IDGAF what any 'charts' say before anyone drags one up; you don't have to be less than 9 stone - at 5 ft 2 to 5 ft 4, to be a 'healthy weight...' When someone says they are 5 ft 3 and 10 stone, and someone pipes up that they are overweight and 'we have lost sight of what a healthy weight is' it really boils my piss.

WilsonMilson · 24/02/2023 18:09

I’m a bit taller and a weigh a couple of pounds less. I’m thin, not average. Most people are bigger than me, but I don’t go around the internet bragging about it, it’s just how I’m made and I eat loads and exercise. I’m healthy. Some people comment that I’m skinny but I guess they feel they can say that rather than calling others fat. Doesn’t really bother me either way, I am what I am and do not really give it any thought. Wouldn’t be motivated to create a thread on it.

caringcarer · 24/02/2023 18:10

I think average height for adult female in UK is about 5 foot 5/6. Average dress size 16. So yes, you are shorter than average and lighter than average. As long as you are healthy it's not a problem.

ErinAndTonic · 24/02/2023 18:11

It's hard to tell because weight isn't the best indicator, muscle and fat mass percentages are what's accurate as you could be extremely muscular and lean, or you could have little muscle and high body fat but actually weigh less because fat is lighter.

I am just under 5"2. I weigh around 7st 10 or so. People would assume I'm therefore teeny tiny, I am not at all. Yes I generally wear a size 6 but this is proportional to my tiny height. I am not fat either but I'd say I feel kind of average in that I'm still quite curvy and have thighs and not a super flat stomach.

When I go to the gym and build muscle, often my weight goes up but fat % goes down and I look smaller yet weigh more. So it's really a complicated one. Also people who aren't short will never get that you can wear a tiny clothes size but not actually be skinny when you're so vertically challenged 😅😅

Fireflies23 · 24/02/2023 18:13

Check on nhs bmi checker…,

BillyDeanisnotmylover · 24/02/2023 18:19

Meh, in real terms, the average size of women in the uk is 5’3” and 11st. But that doesn’t mean that most women are that size, that would be the mode, not the mean. So you could be well over/under that height/weight and still be absolutely usual. 5’3” and 8.5st is small compared to some, but not anywhere near underweight or under height. I really wouldn’t dwell on it.

Ihavedogs · 24/02/2023 18:19

PinkRiceKrispies · 24/02/2023 15:37

A colleague told me I looked unhealthily skinny and it embarrassed me. I don't think I am which is why I am asking.

I am two inches taller than you and only a couple of lbs heavier. I don’t think I look unhealthy or skinny. I suspect you are not either. Sadly we have lost touch with what is a healthy weight and size.

Benjispruce4 · 24/02/2023 18:28

8st 7 at 5ft 3 is normal weight I’d say.

Benjispruce4 · 24/02/2023 18:30

My DD19 is about your size. She is slim, size 8.

Benjispruce4 · 24/02/2023 18:31

Acting she’s about 8stone

But technically 10st to 11st is overweight for some people of that height range. The 'healthy' weight range for my height (5ft3, 36 years old) is 7st 6 to 10st 1. If I weighed 11 stone I would be noticeably overweight...

I'm fat before I'm technically overweight as I have a small build. The highest I've been is 10 and a half stone at 5ft 5 and that was certainly not a healthy weight for me.

It isn’t, though. As it’s been mentioned lots of times, average height is actually 5’3”. Average weight is 11 stone-that may be any dress size.

Yes, that’s possibly true -because it would exclude middle-aged and elderly women who may have been smaller to start with, or who shrink post-menopause.

Same. I was 9st 5 after my freshers year and I had fat rolls...

LT2 · 24/02/2023 19:45

YABU.

I consider myself slightly shorter than average at 5ft 4. I'm around 9 stone.

EmptyPlaces · 24/02/2023 19:48

I’m 5ft 2, 9 stone and at the top end of the healthy BMI. My family constantly accuse me of having an ED. They’re all obese, so to them, I am tiny.

But you can’t come on MN and tell people you’re a normal weight, you’ll get shredded for it.

SleepingSnowRedInBootsAndThePea · 24/02/2023 19:53

You are shorter than average. Your weight is in the middle of a healthy weight for your height so fine.

I don't understand the point of the post? You must have known this before your colleague asked you?

emituofo · 24/02/2023 19:58

Depends on which country you are in. Im similar height and weight to you, I wear UK6 8 xs S usually depends on the brand. In the country where I m from, I would be L XL. Growing up, I was the second fattest in my class and some people called me "fatty", I was often told "sorry we dont have your size". When I went abroad (not to the UK but similar) at 20 years old, I was shocked to be called "tiny" and I could even wear kids clothing. I was also shocked to see how big the sizes are available. It doesnt matter what other people think about you, it is how good you feel in your body. I know when I went up to size 12 after giving birth I looked awful, I hated looking at myself in.the mirror and not being able to wear my normal clothes. Now Im back to size 8 and I feel much happier.

another1bitestheduck · 24/02/2023 20:10

this thread is hilarious in showing how people blithely ignore actual, published and easily obtained statistical data and just base their idea of normal/average on their own life experience.

How does someone 5'8 spend their life walking around in the UK and not realise they are quite a bit taller that most of the women around them?
