5'3 and 8 and a half stone.
Would you say that is average and not 'tiny?'

And it's the same bmi as a 5ft 8 woman who weighs 10st, you can't compare to a group of tall women without using bmi.

Exactly. I think BMI calculator shows us why people who are the size of the OP shouldn’t be called ‘too skinny’. She’s the exact size she should be when we look at her weight/height (providing she has a normal, healthy diet/exercise etc).

Monoplane · 24/02/2023 17:16

I'm a very similar weight and height. You do get a lot of people accusing you of being too skinny, saying you must never eat, insisting that they'd look 'emaciated' at the same weight etc.

It's a completely normal weight and height and I don't consider it noteworthy.

As a nation we have absolutely lost sight of what a healthy weight is, otherwise we wouldn’t have an obesity crisis and a body positivity movement movement to pretend it isn’t happening.

I agree. Two thirds of adults are overweight or obese. That's not a good statistic.

Agree-its nothing to do with having a ‘perfect body’, but we do need more education about what is a healthy weight for our height. Also, educating the public about the potential (highly likely!) health conditions further down the line if you are obese.

tuppacoffee · 24/02/2023 17:21

I'm 5ft 1 and weigh 8.5 stone

My mum and my boss tell me I need a good feed

But in reality? I'm just normal. I've a belly from two kids and I can pinch more than an inch

Do I care? Absolutely not. I hope my daughter is taller though, she's only 20m so I'll report back in about 16 years.

Justforlaffs · 24/02/2023 17:21

Other women at work call me skinny and make constant digs too. They frequently say I look unhealthy and put food on my desk.

When i was pregnant they laughed and called me a fat hippo. Literally can't win with some people.

(Same colleagues who went to HR about me dressing "promiscuously" in a white top, cord pinafore dress and black tights....)

Have you considered reporting this woman to HR for bullying/harassment? Good for you for not letting it bother you but this really isn’t acceptable behaviour in the workplace? She sounds like a real arsehole!

Lachimolala · 24/02/2023 17:22

PinkRiceKrispies · 24/02/2023 15:37

A colleague told me I looked unhealthily skinny and it embarrassed me. I don't think I am which is why I am asking.

Could be worse, you could be 5ft2 like me and 11 stone 😂

I’m have had lifetime of being told I’m unhealthily thin. Until I went through menopause I was about that weight and an inch taller. Now I’m a stone heavier but still apparently skinny at 9.5 stone.

Many people are overweight and body positive campaign has just made people think it’s ok to be overweight.

Comedycook · 24/02/2023 17:26

Aww...that's absolutely tiny. Most other women are absolutely huge compared to teeny tiny you. She was just jealous.

There you go.

Happy now?

Perfect weight for your height OP and I bet you look great. Ignore the comments.

Gincan · 24/02/2023 17:26

You're a healthy weight OP, ignore your colleague, they are probably jealous. Or like a lot of people, they have a really skewed idea about weight and are reeeeeally tetchy about it. Heaven forbid anyone who isn't over weight have insecurities about their size.

RisingSunn · 24/02/2023 17:30

Yes I would think that is average for your height.

Where's my bingo card! grabs blotter!

@Jenasaurus Your DIL looks fine, and healthy, but she does NOT look like a size 10. More like a 14. Clothes sizes have changed in the past 20-25 years. Pre mid 1990s she would have definitely have been a 14.

Does she know you have posted her pic on here btw? You may have hidden her face, but you haven't hidden yours. Everyone who knows you - and her - will know it's her!

Gatekeeper · 24/02/2023 17:31

ahh- those were the days when I was a young 'un. I was 5'8'' and 8.5 stone and looked great. I'm now 5'7'' and 13 stone and look great ;)

HowdoIgetbacktothe80s · 24/02/2023 17:33

I’m 5ft 5 and weigh around 8 stone 8. People are always commenting how they’d love to be a slim as me but I have awful IBS and hate food so I’m far from someone to be envious of. I’d rather be bigger and eat what I’d like without feeling poorly. I don’t know why people even have to comment on other people’s size/weight and it’s usually women commenting on other women. I can’t imagine many men talking about their mates or work colleagues weight, height, clothes size.

On the contrary, DH's weight has been up and down over the years, and men always have something to say. (A few women too but mostly men!) When DH has gained a stone or two, several male ex colleagues/old so-called friends, who haven't seen him for several years, prod his belly and say 'who ate all the donuts???' And one man he saw after losing 3 stone asked him if he'd got cancer as he looked 'scrawny.' He is 5 ft 10 and had dropped to 11 stone from 14 stone.

After I had had my first child, I was still carrying the baby belly 4 weeks later - and one of our (male) neighbours said 'I thought you'd had the baby! Looks like it's still in there.' Also, parents old neighbour (55 y.o. man) took great pleasure in telling me 'bloody hell, you're still a bit of a size arent ya?!' 3 months after I had my second child, and was still 2 stone heavier than I was before I got pregnant.

All men around 40 to 60. Never younger men OR older men... But yeah, it's nonsense to say it's always women bashing other women - only. Men can be vile too. To women AND other men.

mewkins · 24/02/2023 17:45

Average female height is 5ft 3 for women and 5ft 9 for men. But both seem on the small side to me.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 24/02/2023 17:46

I’m 5’ 3”: size 14. 11 st. When I weighed 8 st, a size 8.

KillingLoneliness · 24/02/2023 17:47

You are definitely a healthy weight but height wise you are below average.
I’m 8.5 stone and 5’6’ and I’m always being called skinny yet I think I look quite chunky in places but I’m a pear!
I can’t image that you look like skin and bones but I’ve noticed a lot of people have a skewed view on what healthy looks like and often call people who are a healthy weight “skinny” or say things like “there’s nothing of you” etc.

WimbyAce · 24/02/2023 17:53

I used to be about that weight but a few inches taller and people actually thought it was ok to ask me if I was anorexic.

IncompleteSenten · 24/02/2023 17:56

It's a healthy weight.

It's not the average weight (of women in the UK ).

I’m relieved to say that although I am that weight but a few inches taller, nobody has ever asked me if I am anorexic. I’m very obviously not.

GG1986 · 24/02/2023 17:57

I am 5ft 4 and when I was in my mid 20s I was 8 and a half stone and yes I looked a bit underweight(even though BMI was healthy range) definitely don't weigh that anymore after 2 kids and a thyroid problem! If you aren't worried about your weight then who gives a fuck what your colleague thinks.

No, for the millionth time, the OP is average for height. UK women’s average is 5’3”.
