I found this dress totally unacceptable

Would you wear this out to a restaurant? Wearing nothing underneath but nipple covers and thong?

just to be clear…this is an open all day brunch/lunch then tapas burgers kinda place. family friendly, kids menu crayons ect. Not an evening or drinks venue.

I was completely taken a back as to why anyone would think it’s appropriate to wear that to a kid friendly restaurant

couldn’t find a link to the actual dress but it’s very similar to this Kylie Jenner one.

AIBU here?!

detail missing incase it’s outing!

I wouldn't, but it wouldn't bother me if someone did. Stop policing what women wear. YABU.

Is it meant to be torn at the knees?

A classic symptom of hypothermia is stumbling which might explain the knee rip.

limitedperiodonly · 23/02/2023 10:09

I said sexist, I meant ageist. I'm tired. Please explain why you say I don't understand what ageism means.

@Makilda we'll forget you getting in a muddle about sexism but I'm tired too so why don't you do me a favour and explain what you mean by ageism. Then I can work out whether to bother to respond to you or write it off as you getting in another muddle about words.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 23/02/2023 13:58

What I’ll never understand is why it’s inappropriate to wear tight/see through/revealing clothes yet at the swimming pool or the beach it’s perfectly ok to wear practically nothing and have your body on display to all and sundry.

I'm not talking about the appropriateness of certain outfits for certain occasions, but just the fact that a swimsuit or bikini leaves one incredibly exposed, yet if you wore your bra and pants in, say, the park it would be a huge problem. What is it about a swimming pool that makes it ok? I mean there are kids and men there too. You are showing exactly the same amount of flesh.

TangledWebOfDeception · 23/02/2023 14:10

It’s not hard to understand, really. Think about it for a while and you will likely be able to figure it out.

HeebieJeebies7 · 23/02/2023 17:58

What type of hypocrisy is this , if a man wore something like that to a restaurant with kids he would be labelled a peadophile , why is it OK for a woman to do so ? Where are the woke kids today ?

middlenglander · 23/02/2023 18:07

It's a disgrace - and really doesn't look good on any level. Bizarre outfit.

PuddlesPityParty · 23/02/2023 18:10

Why is it unacceptable? Who made you the fashion police? It covers what it needs too. It’s just the fashion atm.

hareagain · 23/02/2023 18:57

ChristinaXYZ · 22/02/2023 22:07

Agree with this - no adult, male or female has the right to expose themselves in front of children, and whilst that dress is not quite as bad as exposing herself it is still inappropriate outside of an adult only setting. In the evening and in adult only settings then hell yes, the woman can wear what she wants.

Other adult women might shrug and say so what, but I bet some of the kids there felt very uncomfortable. Not all, but some and kids can't articulate why and they can't just vote with their feet and leave. N othing to do with policing women. It is to do with protecting kids from adult behaviour.

What about bikinis and speedos?

What about bikinis and speedos?

It's about context, isn't it? On the beach/at the pool, speedos and bikinis are fine.

You don't wear it into a restaurant, although if you're on holiday you might just shove a cover-up on.

But it would be bloody weird to wear speedos or a bikini into a family restaurant in the UK in February, with or without a cover-up.

UthredofBattenberg · 23/02/2023 19:08

I wouldn't wear it (at any point in my life, but certainly not these days! ) and tbh, I would be a bit 🤨 at anyone that did outside of a nightclub.

But I'm clearly a prude given the other responses!

I personally wouldn't be offended or upset (with original image) and neither would I be worried if I had the kids in tow. I really don't think they would notice , probably because they wouldn't be influenced by my negatively. I don't think it has anything to do with context.

supersop60 · 23/02/2023 19:32

Is that one of those dresses that only shows up as see-through under flash photography? Some sheer fabrics are more opaque in normal light.

lazycats · 23/02/2023 19:33

The cowardly OP has fucked off but I’m curious why they’d give a shit.

I personally wouldn't be offended or upset either, but I would think that the person could probably use some guidance from someone who loves them about what's appropriate in various settings/situations.

cherish123 · 23/02/2023 19:52

Inappropriate but also hideous and unflattering.

KnittingSister · 23/02/2023 19:58

Looks draughty, she could do with a vest on, and some comfy knickers 😁

TheHateIsNotGood · 23/02/2023 20:15

Weren't they a bit chilly? No wonder they needed nipple protectors.

Happychappy3 · 23/02/2023 20:34

We're all entitled to our opinions :)
However, who's to say what's appropriate or inappropriate. Each to their own !

Do you not like going to the beach then?

OoooohMatron · 23/02/2023 20:56

Well I wouldn't but we'd all have a good snigger at whoever was.

DinosApple · 23/02/2023 20:58

I'd stare Grin.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 23/02/2023 20:59

I love these posts where mumsnetters fall over themselves to prove themselves the most right on and the least judgemental, when in reality most people would give a second glance and be a bit taken aback at the very least!

I'd think it's an odd outfit to wear during the day and to family friendly event unless the person was a) a known attention seeker or b) a celebrity.

Sennelier1 · 23/02/2023 21:05

If it's the children you are worried about......I would tell my grandson that the lady couldn't find her underwear this morning, so went without. He's 5 and would think it weird, but he wouldn't be in shock, let alone damaged.
