To only drive places I know?

So I am driving around two years now. Passed my test first time and while I know I am a competent driver; I am still nervous. It’s others on the road who make me worry- if that makes sense. Like tailgaters,I try to ignore them but it’s a horrible feeling. I think it’s disgusting that irresponsible people do this just because you are driving safely. Anyway, I only drive when I need to- to work daily and local shops/appointments, I drive the dog to the local park or whatever. All routes I know and I have practice on.

If there is any kind of roadworks diversion etc I feel instant panic set in. I stick to routes I know and don’t drive anywhere else. Is there anyone else like this with driving? I’m happy I have the skill but I do only use the car when it’s essential.

Yes and you said if I believe that it's a good job I'm not driving much.

yes because as already stated, slow driving is hazardous and can be prosecuted as an offence

Well a slow driver in front of me, although they may not doing what they are supposed to do, isn't going to make me crash.unless I get all impatient and drive to close to bully them to go faster.

and what about the other 20 cars all having to crawl along behind you because the slow driver can’t cope with normal driving conditions? What about the emergency vehicles that have to try and navigate that 20 car tailback?
What about the juggernaut HGVs that take 3 times as long to brake that suddenly come upon someone driving significantly below the limit?
You can keep denying it all you like. The fact of the matter is that slow drivers have been successfully prosecuted as they are deemed hazardous and inconsiderate to others 🤷‍♀️

I actually think your absolute lack of awareness about the risks of slow vehicles to drivers other than yourself is pretty concerning @Iusedtobecarmen

OP, just start increasing your routes.

Do it if your own free will in your own time, rather than because of an unexpected diversion etc. Maybe start by choosing a new place each week, and see it as a positive thing. For fun. You will feel a lot more competent and confident.

They absolutely are dicks for sure. But I do also understand their frustration sometimes - I’ve seen someone doing about 65mph in the outside lane (“fast lane” - I know it doesn’t exist, but people call it that) with dozens of cars behind them for a good 10/15 miles because they are overtaking stuff… but with gaps that they could pull in to to let the rest go past them. I don’t tailgate because I don’t want to risk arse ending them, but I do get why people do it when they’re completely oblivious to everyone else on the road.

I agree, it’s similar to anyone driving along the motorway at say 50mph for no good reason, anyone coming up behind them at 70 has to break or overtake which they shouldn’t have to do.

And if the vehicle coming up behind is a HGV they simply can’t slow down quick enough and might not have the space to overtake - anyone driving about completely oblivious to the dangers of being too slow is a real worry on the roads.

I know the stupid bastard in the HGV behind me, filling up all my mirrors, was able to slow down, as he wasn't anywhere in sight when I overtook, but accelerated up on purpose and proceeded to flash me.
How he thought I could pull back blind into the left lane, I don't know.
He must have known I couldn’t accelerate away, as my 2CV was at its limit.
This was years ago, and I still wish him all kinds of ill. It was very scary.

It’s actually worrying that you’re so far wrong on this - driving too slowly can be just as dangerous to other people on the road and the police can prosecute for ‘dangerous’ or being ‘careless and inconsiderate’.

Drivers who aren’t educated in the rules of the road are a danger to other people, and that’s not just speeding.

Well maybe yeah on the motorway if you're daft enough to drive at 30mph.
I don't use the motorway.
I drive at the correct speed on normal roads. I sometimes see someone driving as slow as a snail, but mostly speeding and careless.

Thanks armchair traffic police officer. I'm probably actually more up to date with the highway code as I've passed fairly recently.
I have never come across and massive queue of traffic with am emergency vehicle struggling to get past and a lorry slamming on his brakes amist all this chaos.
But of it happens then yeah, the slow driver is solely to blame :)
I don't even drive fucking slow so I have no idea why I'm explaining to someone ( who has nothing better to do) why I think speeding is worse than driving slow.
Not me. I don't do either.

Iusedtobecarmen · 24/02/2023 17:49

And I'd love to know who all these people have been successfully prosecuted for driving slow are. Wel I tell ya what, someone needs to come and observe all the dickheads that drive like loonies in the rough area where I work.
Jesus they would have successful prosecutions coming out their ears.

So you’re using insults and your limited experience of never seeing something (as a recently qualified driver) to dismiss other’s actual experiences?

yep that’s reasoned robust discussion right there (or not 😂)

you do seem have lost the thread of the discussion, and are struggling to follow it so perhaps have a nice restful Friday night instead eh?
you seem rather worked up

Considering HGVs have speed limiters to 60mph you must’ve been going pretty slow in the overtaking lane.

I do appreciate that sounds like a scary experience but not sure why you’d think it was the other drivers fault that your car wasn’t able to drive at the speed expected on a motorway.

Giggorata · 25/02/2023 14:37

Read my post again - I said he drove up behind me very fast DELIBERATELY to prevent me pulling back in, after overtaking something even slower than me.
Previously. it was all clear.
Or I wouldn't have overtaken, knowing the limitations of my vehicle.

Nah not worked up. Well yes, maybe a little as this is a thread about driving anxiety and threads like this are pretty often taken over by posters who find it odd and make OP feel worse.

I may be a limited driver but I'm a very experienced passenger and traveller! I have travelled extensively up and down the UK and I know what I see. And I've never seen this kind of 'pile up' caused by a slow driver in all of my nearly 50 years 🙄
Plenty of fast drivers though and near misses and plenty of over confident 'experienced ' drivers who know it all.
