Where are all the tomatoes?

I'll admit it, I eat a lot of tomatoes.

Daily probably.

But where are they?

AIBU to ask you if there are tomatoes where you live?

Yep, loads. Many different varieties.

BettyCake · 20/02/2023 12:32

No tomatoes or peppers in my local Tesco this morning

Bippetyboppityboob · 20/02/2023 12:33

Bad weather has meant the crops in countries we import from haven't done well, and for tomatoes grown here the cost of living crisis has meant growers can't afford to heat their greenhouses sufficiently. I found some cherry tomatoes in the local shop at lunch, they haven't had any for a while. Plenty in the greengrocers (and red peppers) but expensive.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 20/02/2023 12:35

My only choice in Tesco last week were the multi coloured cherry type.

Tomatoes are the food of Satan. My plan to rid the world of them seems to be working ...... 😯

ChungusBoi · 20/02/2023 12:37

The harvest was affected by the weather this year, so what survived of the European crop is more expensive. The increasing cost of energy to heat greenhouses combined with supermarkets unwilling to pay a fair price to growers are also factors.

verdantverdure · 20/02/2023 12:37

The only ones I could get were beef tomatoes but that was over a week ago, and it's not for want of looking.

No tomatoes yesterday or today in my local Asda. Dd is furious Grin

jay55 · 20/02/2023 12:40

Tomatoes but no peppers where I am.

Mindymomo · 20/02/2023 12:41

I now get the cherry tomatoes, they seem to last. Cannot seem to get red peppers, only green, but we don’t like them. Iceberg lettuces have shrunk to being tiny.

verdantverdure · 20/02/2023 12:41

It's to do with a bad harvest @Bippetyboppityboob?

Generally they see those coming well in advance so we could have switched to other suppliers I would have thought?

We haven't got peppers either. Which is a shame because plenty of my "knock up a meal within 30 minutes of walking in the door" need one of both of those.

Loads in Tescos and Waitrose here.

User174863988 · 20/02/2023 12:43

I usually get piccolo cherry vine tomatoes on my Tesco online shop, last week there were no cherry tomatoes at all the only thing available were packs of six salad tomatoes so I bought those instead.

ByeByeLouisByeByeKlaus · 20/02/2023 12:44

No tomatoes to be found here either! Very annoying, I’m also a daily tomato eater. 😠

Pixiedust1234 · 20/02/2023 12:44

Loads in aldi this morning. East Midlands.

It's very erratic- huge blanks in veg in general here at both Waitrose, M&S and Tescos - and what there is is decidedly a bit manky in my opinion. I've started buying more frozen - cauliflower in particular I've noticed a shortage of

Rebellious23 · 20/02/2023 12:46

Lancashire and none in Aldi
I bought sun dried ones. Loads of other veg though

Alexandernevermind · 20/02/2023 12:46

Not helpful this time of year, but get some seeds in op. Once you've tasted and smelt home grown tomatoes there is no going back.

I don't know what else to eat. I've got salad leaves with black olives in my lunch tub. I can't say I'm excited about it without the crunch of cucumber and the juicy tomatoes. 🥗
