Where are all the tomatoes?

I'll admit it, I eat a lot of tomatoes.

Daily probably.

But where are they?

AIBU to ask you if there are tomatoes where you live?

Go to the markets. It's the supermarkets which are short, not the rest. I've seen 2 markets this week with loads of everything.

@verdantverdure Another huge tomato eater here - all of my five a day and then some. I am now stockpiling tins of tomatoes, tomato puree and tomato juice so I can supply my addiction.

I am trying to stop eating imported veg but that means tomato-less from October to May even with a small greenhouse. I do grow my own and have an allotment but there's a problem with tomato blight and people not burning the blight so I have pots in my garden. I do save as much water as I can.

My independent veg shop (quite a few miles away) had peppers but honestly they were the size of a tomato!

By the time you'd de-stalk and de-seed them, there'd be nothing left! The ones this week in Spain were honestly about 9-12 inches long and oval, delicious!

We have one. It's only one day a week, and it sold out by about 8am last week.

My Tesco delivery has tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, and eggs missing today.

We had a post on one of our local groups saying that one of the local supermarkets had salad, closely followed by one about half an hour later saying it was all gone now so I don't think they had much stock.

It's poo missing out on your regular everyday staples.

We (the government) need to sort it out.

I personally don't want tomatoes shipping from Mexico or Africa. I want a sane trade agreement with the nearest tomato growing countries just over the water.

I got mine from Tesco. They were normal size but only green and yellow available.

RosesAndHellebores · 25/02/2023 20:13

They are all in Waitrose and M&S in my local town. My apologies if that upsets anyone. There was also lettuce, cucumber and avocado. Not sure about peppers as I wasn't looking for them.

Nimbostratus100 · 25/02/2023 21:55

I've just been to a giant sainsbury's

No tomatoes at all, or cucumber - lots of salad type food missing

Avocados everywhere 😂

Local supermarket had full counters of tomatoes, cucumber & lettuce today.

M&S nearby had middling amounts, plenty enough for a busy Saturday shop.

In ours they're in the small independent corner shops which have alternative supply lines to the big supermarkets. (Transit van from the nearest EU country through our unchecked borders I suspect)

No tomatoes round here again.

We have a salad finding WhatsApp now, we all check our designated supermarket as often as we can and let the rest of the group know the state of play.

That's how I got a cucumber.

I got some cherry tomatoes today, that was the whole selection, 2 crates of small packs of cherry tomatoes. Small crate of cucumbers and some loose yellow peppers.

This was a Sainsburys super store.

This made me laugh

Madcats · 03/03/2023 13:20

This is bizarre. I've popped into. Lidl, M&S, Coop and had an Ocado order this week.

They seem to be having no trouble getting Moroccan tomatoes, cucumber, salad etc.

It has to be the buying policies/supply chains of the hypermarkets that are the problem here.

Sympathies to those of you in an area without local shops.

bonjello · 03/03/2023 13:30

GOT ONE

Harebrain · 03/03/2023 16:11

Loads of tomatoes of all types in our local Lidl this morning. Popped in to Sainsbury’s to get some yoghurts and they had plenty of tomatoes too. 🤷🏻

ifonly4 · 03/03/2023 16:14

I pop into the supermarket about four times a week as I do my shopping on foot after work. It seems that our Tescos have a delivery of tomatoes, peppers and cucumber about once a week as it's been a Wednesday each time they've been topped up.

I got a full 6 in Iceland after striking out in Tesco, Morrisons and Lidl.

Loads of tomatoes, cucumber and peppers in Lidl, Tesco and Asda today. TBH it'd be more worrying if there were no potatoes, carrots and "winter vegetables".

I couldn't get carrots or Kale

Amazingly my Tesco delivery last night contained both cucumber and tomatoes. I wasn’t optimistic.

Oakbeam · 04/03/2023 09:42

I think it must very regional. Tomatoes were a bit thin on the ground at one point but I’ve not had a problem getting anything. Certainly not potatoes, carrots and other root vegetables.

The Lidl near where I work has had a massive gaping hole in the veg section for weeks now, but the new one the next town over is sporadically fine according to our fruit and veg WhatsApp.

I've never spent so much flipping time in supermarkets in my life.
