I'll admit it, I eat a lot of tomatoes.

Daily probably.

But where are they?

AIBU to ask you if there are tomatoes where you live?

I got 1 pepper from my last asda delivery instead of tomatoes. It was red at least. 🙄

verdantverdure · 20/02/2023 13:28

I googled tomato shortage and found this:

None in Aldi for several weeks now, managed to get some of the expensive cherry variety packs from Tesco though. No broccoli last week either. Or eggs.

I'm a supermarket picker and our handsets dictate which subs we must choose. It's not up to us. If there are none of your ordered item on the shelf, there are none on the shelf! So please don't roll your eyes! We do what we can.

I'm in the SE and no tomatoes, cucumber or peppers in my supermarket this morning. Apparently bad weather has reduced supplies. I also was wondered what I'm going to have for lunch at work this week.

Riapia · 20/02/2023 13:43

None in the local food bank either.

JamSandle · 20/02/2023 13:43

Still lots of tomatoes here.

Nitgel · 20/02/2023 13:46

None in sainsbo here in n London

Getthekernowlook · 20/02/2023 13:46

How about tomato chutney for your tomato fix?

What do you have in your lunchtime salad then? I guess I'm quite basic and boringly British, but I like salad leaves, tomato and cucumber with some black olives.

We do the "eat the rainbow" approach to nutrition, and tomatoes and peppers are a good way to get red food into us.

(We have macular degeneration in the family so we make sure to get plenty of utein and zeaxanthin from red and orange veg.)

In winter I switch to soups instead of salads. Things like tomatoes canned in the summer, preserved roasted peppers are tastier sun ripened and preserved than artificially ripened out of season. Also the in-season veg like kale, cabbage, spinach, broccoli, beetroot are high in utein and zeaxanthin.

OK central Scotland. None in my local tesco or morrisons but managed to nab these in m&s but only had half a dozen packs

I thought it was because it was a late Saturday afternoon that there was literally not one tomato in our huge local Sainsburys!

I was very lucky to be able to visit the Mutti tomato factory last summer. When we visited their farm for harvest, it was explained that the whole of the region had experienced extreme draught and it had a huge effect on production (the main river had completely dried out!). And obviously not just Mutti but the whole region had experienced it - so fresh tomatoes too.

I did managed to get one of the last 3 packs of vine ripened tomatoes in Aldi at the weekend. Nothing in Tesco, Sainsburys or Lidl the last few times I’ve been in.

WaltzingWaters · 20/02/2023 13:58

I’m the same, eat loads of tomatoes, and Aldi only had the cheap big salad tomatoes in yesterday, and no peppers.

Toottooot · 20/02/2023 14:01

The Markies local to me had nae peppers fan I was in earlier.

TheKeatingFive · 20/02/2023 14:03

I'm in ROI and I havent noticed any issues with stock here at all.

Eightiesgirl · 20/02/2023 14:13

No tomatoes in Tesco Chorley, lancs yesterday. I tried to add some to my delivery today and none at all available.

stopringingme · 20/02/2023 14:14

jay55 · 20/02/2023 12:40

Tomatoes but no peppers where I am.

Same here, my DD is a very fussy eater but loves peppers.

I had to resort to the very expensive farm shop 2 average size peppers £3

I am hoping they are in stock when DH goes to Tesco later.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/02/2023 14:14

No problems of any kind getting them in S.Yorks. Always in delivery when ordered.

Bubblebubblebah · 20/02/2023 14:21

Wholesale price jumped alraedy in summer/early autumn.
Crop was poor afaik plus there were some delays

motleymop · 20/02/2023 14:22

Ah! There were none in Waitrose this morning. No peppers either. I thought it was a bit peculiar.

BusySittingDown · 20/02/2023 14:27

They had very few in Sainsburys yesterday. They had lots of vine ones that looked delicious but they can get fucked if they think I'm paying £2.25 for cherry tomatoes.

I got some cheap baby plum ones but they are very pale and don't taste that great 😕.

They only had two sticks of cucumber too!

Yerroblemom1923 · 20/02/2023 14:44

Cherry toms I managed to find in Lidl yesterday but can't find carrots anywhere! Not even the Co op!
