Why is there shops full of clothes for women who are skinnt but nothing bigger i hate going clothes literally can never find anything in a size 16 it's all size 6 and 8 is the fat back in the 90s discrimination trend coming in again?? Shouldn't need to skinny to look nice??

OP posts:
Morgysmum · 21/02/2023 19:22

I have always thought this, been a fat kid, all the girls clothes where for the thinner kids, I wandered around the shops, whilst my mates picked up and tried on clothes. I just hung around and said that's pretty, whilst knowing none would fit me. Mum brought my uniform from the ladies size, in her kays catalogue.
Roll on a few years, it's the same, I see something I like, but no it only goes up to a 12 (I aren't) the larger size clothes are in a pattern like a 80's carpet.
I brought a top, I didn't really like, but needed a new top, the skinny woman, who sold it, said its nice to be comfortable. But I could tell, she wouldn't be caught dead in it. It had the style and fit of a paper bag.

Yarrawonga · 21/02/2023 19:22

Remember shopping in a store in Singapore, lovely clothes, everything 6,8 or 10.I asked did they do any clothes in a 12,the sales assistant looked at me in disgust like I was grossly overweight!

I had the same thing when trying to buy a bra. I couldn’t find anything in my size so had to ask. From the assistants reaction I think she thought that I ought to be in an a circus freak show.

Maybe you need to visit other shops.
M&S and Bonmarche have upped their game in recent years and cater for sizes up to size 24/26.

She says she fits into size 18 jeans, so within the standard range of “normal” sizing in many shops.

cherish123 · 21/02/2023 19:23

I find the opposite.
I think sizes are ridiculously big now. I bought an xs jumper recently and it was enormous. Another person could have fitted in!
30 years ago, I was 7.5 stone and wore size 12 Mark and Spencer skirt. Now I am around 8 stone and have to buy size 8.

Beverlybeier · 21/02/2023 20:42

It was a thing in the 80's 90's and 2000's but not now unless you want to shop on line. Just the sad way of retail

Seasonofthewitch83 · 20/02/2023 10:09

That isn't privilege though.

Still sucks for you, but it is not the same.

I don’t see the difference. Melanies could complain about the privilege of being bigger than a size 4, just as much as someone size 24 could complain about the privilege of being smaller. Neither are much catered for is the point.

I don't either. Slim people, overweight people in regular sizes, and those in between are well catered for. Very thin/slight people and people in plus sizes are not well catered for.

But the current fashion is very oversized.

WTAFhappened123 · 21/02/2023 22:42

Skinny privilege? Ha ha whatever next… size 8 here - I work bloody hard to stay in shape and watch what I eat! I think it’s hard to find sizes are both end of the sizing spectrum because a brand will cater for the ‘average’ sized person but seriously naming it ‘skinny privilege’ is another bonkers woke entitled waaah poor me 😂

kennycat · 21/02/2023 22:58

I disagree OP. I’m a size 6 and see virtually nothing labelled as such. And the few things I do find are much bigger than a 6 in truth!!

This, and this again.

eastegg · 21/02/2023 23:08

Sorry not sure that was very clear! I was just agreeing wholeheartedly with kennycat.

BellePeppa · 22/02/2023 09:27

GarlicGrace · 21/02/2023 07:53

Don't you get it? They're envious. I used to lie to colleagues who made a thing about my coffee-break cake, saying I'd have to knock 400 calories off my eating for the rest of the day. And if they called me skinny, I'd say thank you.

It's not bloody difficult.

So some middle aged bloke at work telling me I looked like a ‘Biafran’ was because he was jealous of me? Another middle aged jerk telling me I had legs like pipe cleaners was also an expression of jealousy. My friend’s middle aged parents telling me I needed to ‘eat a good meal’ was also because they were both jealous of me, er ok then. Maybe people being insulting to fat people is also stemmed in jealousy then, yes?

threatmatrix · 22/02/2023 11:46

I find the opposite. Shops like M&S only ever have sizes 16+ left. I feel like I’m discriminated on because I’m healthy.

wentworthinmate · 22/02/2023 12:02

I can never find 14 or 16 in anything I like in my local Marks. It’s like someone the same as me has just been shopping 10 minutes ahead of me!

Kennykenkencat · 22/02/2023 15:01

If anything size 16 seems to mean you must be very tall.
I am not tall.
I am short even for my age group

I gave up buying clothes years ago because everything seemed to suddenly change and whilst my size hadn’t changed I was suddenly faced with clothes that didn’t fit me in any shape or form.
The normal 8 or 10 clothes which were my go to racks were now huge and so so long.

I tried on a jump suit a few months ago that Dd had picked out but the crotch was somewhere below my knees and the v kneck was some where near my belly button and the amount of material that was trailing on the floor I could have made cushion covers for a whole sofa out of.

Dd tried on the same in a size 2 and it fitted her perfectly. The size 2 would have been a much better fit in the length of things if I wasn’t a size 16
The size 16 was for someone who was around 6ft 10” tall

I am nearer 4ft 10 than 6ft 10”

Greenshed · 22/02/2023 15:57

So it’s ok to refer to someone as “skinny” is it? What’s wrong with saying slim?
Its long been taboo to call someone fat, but it seems skinny is alright to say.

I'm 5'8 and everything suddenly seems short. I bought some standard length jeans the other day and they were at my calf. I have to buy tall now, which I've never had to in the past.

I think the shops are messing with us.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/02/2023 16:24

@HunterHearstHelmsley same here. I’m the same height.

I think the fashion is for ankle length which causes this. I bought some ‘tall’ dungarees from Fat face, a place l never go, but was attracted by the ‘tall’.

What a joke. Cut me in half and the trousers were 1/2 way up my legs. I don’t know how tall their tall is!

LoisLane66 · 23/02/2023 13:14

I'm a size 14/16 and have no trouble buying clothes in size 16 in M&S, Primark, Boden or anywhere else. Last week I bought 2 pairs faux leather trousers from River Island and cord shirt from Boden, not in sales.
You must have your eyes shut. I have jeans and cargo pants recently bought in M&S and Primark plus 2 tops . Most of the clothes in my 3 wardrobes are size 16 and about 20% are size 14 but a generous 14. In Primark I go for large if they're sized - SML+ and not 14/16/18 etc.

LoisLane66 · 23/02/2023 13:27

You weigh 16st yet can fit in a size 16? That's pretty good. I'm 11st 2lbs and size 16, 5-5.
I have been a size 18 when I weighed 13st. Since giving up sugar and all sweet stuff I have dropped weight but if you lose too much you look gaunt and don't lose weight in the right places. All the very expensive 38GG bras no longer fit as I'm now 36DD.
Throughout life your body will change shape even when you might still fit in the same size clothes. For example, they'll be tighter in some places and looser in others yet fit well on your arms and thighs.

I’m 11 stone and a size 10, I’m also shorter than you so are you sure you aren’t buying clothes too big?
