Why is there shops full of clothes for women who are skinnt but nothing bigger i hate going clothes literally can never find anything in a size 16 it's all size 6 and 8 is the fat back in the 90s discrimination trend coming in again?? Shouldn't need to skinny to look nice??

I’m a size 8. I always find the rails full of bigger sizes but hardly anything in my size. It’s the same with online shopping, the XS and Smalls sell out first.

BreviloquentBastard · 20/02/2023 09:06

Oh behave, the average size of UK women is 14-16, stop trying to find things to make yourself a victim of some sort of discrimination. I could understand if you were a size 28 and genuinely struggled to find anything in your size in typical highstreet shops, but 14-16 is just going to sell out quickest.

Ndd135632 · 20/02/2023 09:06

Oh gawd. So happy to see it here. Size 10 ain’t skinny. It’s kind of the size we meant to be.

Gincan · 20/02/2023 09:08

Where are you shopping?? 🤔

Hope551 · 20/02/2023 09:09

Well I have noticed there is an influx of tiny sizes now. I've always had an ED so could yo-yo from size 4 to size 12. Back a few years ago in shops clothes would start at 6 or 8. But now they have size 4 and xxs. But I think they might be catering to teens now though as the teen clothes shop no longer exist. When I worked in H&M the kids section age 12 was bigger than size 4 😂 I use to tell some teens to shop in adult section and look at size 4.

lljkk · 20/02/2023 09:10

That's funny. I swear clothes are all made for apple or Pear shapes & very little for us hour glasses. We used to be the standard shape but now everyone is a pear or apple. I have resorted to buying teenager clothes (age 15-16) to get adjustable waists that actually fit my waist = not fat middle.

I'd say there's Pear shape privilege!

Thepeopleversuswork · 20/02/2023 09:12

I find there's always stock available for the very small and the larger sizes but never anything in sizes 10, 12 or 14. It's the middle sizes where the real crunch tends to happen. I rarely see sizes 6 to 8 sold out....

I thought pear shape still has a waist and wider hips so is we are talking separates, whatever is available for a pear should suit an hourglass>

80sMum · 20/02/2023 09:15

Firstly, YABU for using the term "skinny" to refer to normal-sized people. Secondly, a lack of larger sizes has never been my experience - more often than not, clothes rails are full of sizes 14, 16 and 18 with few, if any, smaller sizes.

ImprobablePuffin · 20/02/2023 09:21

I have the opposite problem in that I can only find sizes 16 and up - went shopping twice recently to look for some new tops and was frustrated as everything on display was size 16 and up - not a 12 or 14 in sight

Wanderingowl · 20/02/2023 09:25

Whyisitsososohard · 20/02/2023 08:48

I think clothes stock is a tiny part of what skinny privlidge is. I've gone form a 22 to a 14 do not skinny but getting clothes is so much easier.

You'll have people here telling you it's not a thing and the price you pay for being fat though...

It's not a privilege to be a normal, healthy weight. It's just baseline. It's not easier to be a standard size for a human, it's just harder to be bigger than that. Just like it's harder in lots of ways to be very short, as I am, or very tall. Though with our height we don't have any options to change.

I am pear-shaped (size 6/8/10 top, size 10/12/14 bottom, depending on where the clothes are from).

Pear-shaped people wear separates. There are no one-piece clothes that I'm aware of that will fit a pear-shaped physique. I've never seen a size chart that matches my proportions - bust 33, waist 29, hips 39 - and I very much doubt that I ever will. If you know of any, please let me know!

Separates can be worn by any shape, including hourglass shape surely?

The 4 and the xxs are just bigger now than they used to be. I wear a 4 or xxs in lots of shops and I have 39" hips. I don't know what the hell women with smaller hips wear.

I’m a size 8 but I’m not skinny.

Last time I was in M&S there were lots of bigger sizes - I struggled to find the smaller ones.

The very cheap shops are probably aimed at teenagers who are likely to be in the smaller sizes?

If you’re ‘size 8’ but you’re not skinny and struggle to fit the smaller sizes then you’re not a size 8 surely? Confused

ChickenDhansak82 · 20/02/2023 09:31

ARGH! I think it is the other way round.

So many clothes in a size 14 to 16 compared to size 8 or even a 10 on the shelves.

The sales are just what is left over - usually the poorly fitting items where you try on your normal size and it looks ridiculous.

And you should try being a size 10 and nearly 5'11!! So many 14+ pairs of jeans the other day but hardly anything in a 10, then so many of the size 10s short length, as they seem to assume slimmer people are also really short!

And just to get this clear, size 8 is NOT skinny unless you are over 6ft tall. It is a NORMAL size. Most people in a size 14 unless you are quite tall would be considered overweight.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/02/2023 09:31

Years ago when l was a designer, shops bought in size ratios. So one size 8, one size 10, 2size 13, 3 size 14 etc.

I think they must still do this. They don’t seem to have caught up. If it akways small and large sizes in the sales, then they are buying the wrong sizes ratios. But they don’t seem to care.

Prinark has lots of small sizes as it’s aimed at teens who are smaller that the rest of the population.

@Cuppsoupmonster I didn’t say I struggled to fit the smaller sizes? I am definitely not skinny despite being a size 8 - I would say I have a petite slim shape. I’ve been the same weight since I was 18 (apart from the baby years) but I’ve never been described as skinny.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/02/2023 09:33

Fwiw I’m a 14L.

Rarer than hens teeth

Smoothlines · 20/02/2023 09:33

I don’t think it’s right to “inverse-fat-shame” people by deriding them as “skinny”. Size 6/8/etc are normal sizes, not freakishly unusual ones.

Courgeon · 20/02/2023 09:34

I get called "skinny" and I'm smack bang in the middle of the BMI healthy weight range so hardly underweight. The whole "real women" and "fat positive" thing has warped our view of what normal is, as well as irresponsible advertising by companies like snag in the name of inclusivity. Promoting obesity is as bad as promoting smoking in my view. I'm an 8-10 but find it hard to buy clothes as I have broad shoulders, narrow hips and big boobs. Dresses just don't fit me which is frustrating as I like them!

follyfoot37 · 20/02/2023 09:34

This does not make sense.

ItchyBillco · 20/02/2023 09:35

Where are you shopping that there’s only 6s and 8s on the rail? Isn’t 12-16 the most popular size in the UK? That’s probably why, if it’s the case, that they’re not on the shelves.

Everanewbie · 20/02/2023 09:36

Skinny privilege? Heard it all now. There is no inherent privilege with maintaining an energy consumption that matches energy output. I've got admiration for their discipline and wish I had a bit more of it myself.

Maybe an 'advantage of having a healthy body mass' is a fairer way of describing the phenomena that you encounter?

Designer stuff tends to aim towards the model physiques but as other people have said, our average tends to be 12-16 which means that those items will fly out when there is a sale.

there's never any small washing up gloves in the shops let alone extra small, all socks are too baggy on me and heel ends up, up my achilles, all cycle helmets move around pointlessly my Y5 daughter still wears toddler one, and Clark's don't make shoes narrow enough for my daughter or for me now, all adidas trainers are far too wide for her, swimming caps cover my daughter's eyes and nose and all knitted gloves are too baggy for me and I have to fold the wrist over, I have to tie aprons crossed over at back and tied at the front, can't wear any jeans at all, traditional running belts don't adjust enough, I get advised to try teen glasses at Specsavers..... where's my skinny privilege? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
