Today BJ is stirring up the DUP to oppose Sunak's N Ireland proposals, whatever they may be. Surely there can't be a second chance for the idiot responsible for our current mess? There aren't enough stupid people in our country to let him in again I hope. Will he unseat Sunak?

Millionaire Starmer and friends of Islington no doubt are super excited about all the extra cleaners that will be available at rock bottom prices, and car valet options. They can look past the flood of crack cocaine dealing at the end of the street and industrial scales of human trafficking.

Compared to this shower in charge at the moment, I couldn't think of any good reason not to think that giving the opposition a go would be a good idea. Admittedly, the bar isn't particularly high with this Tory government but why wouldn't anyone not want to try someone different?

We aren't taking people from Afghan, there is no means for an afghan to come here legally... , plus quite a few who cross the channel are from Afghan but you want them stopped?
Ukrainians will, hopefully, go home when safe to do so... and i agree we should help anyone fleeing a war zone BUT China and specifically HK isn't a war zone, its very prosperous place and i assume you don't want the UK to open its doors to anyone from a non democratic state?

More importantly, how can you bemoan "the UK has no housing stock etc etc" but then want to see 5m people come here for no other reason because they can?

You seem to be full of contradictions or rather, whatever the Tories do on immigration is perfect.

I've heard one can expect over a billion immigrants in Starmer's first year as PM.
I guess many will come from China, unless we are expecting the whole of Africa to move in.

I just knew you would say that.

No, opening up safe routes wouldn’t change a single thing because these people would never be granted asylum legally, all the safe routes in the world won’t change the fact that these people are not in harms way. They are looking to make as much as money as possible end of.

So we would continue to see ever more trafficking. Nothing would change with or without ‘safe routes’

Your grip on this is pitiful.

You are spoon fed this bullshit and churn it out it’s worrying.

No, opening up safe routes wouldn’t change a single thing because these people would never be granted asylum legally

You do know that your use of "these people" says so very much about you? None of it good.

At least six out of ten (60%) of "these people" who made the dangerous Channel crossing to the UK in small boats last year will be recognised as refugees through the asylum process, new analysis from the Refugee Council shows.

I feel that I've strayed into the bar at a Golf Club that wouldn't want me as a member. It's quite wearing, all this repetition, like being cornered by the resident Gin Fiend.

Well the latest poll has had
Labour hit 50 percent and the Conservatives down to 22 percent. If people are annoyed by Labour's alleged policy void it doesn't appear to show yet. More support for a government losing an election - albeit the figures are extreme.

Since I don't live in Islington I didn't vote for Jeremy Corbyn

I didn't think you lived in Islington which is why I avoided using the word 'vote' in my post.

All the available evidence shows us that Jeremy Corbyn would have been a far better Prime Minister than any of the 3 we have had since the last election

I doubt it - although I know Keir Starmer was a fan;

I think Corbyn would have handled Covid better, he just has more empathy, even T.May said that after the London bridge stabbings, definitely better than "Its a Disgrace Truss"

Corbyn seems to keep getting elected too, no need to parachute him into a safe seat but of course, he is done for over his inability to deal with antisemitism.... which reminds me, how did the Tories get on with thie far reaching investigation into Islamophobia.. anyone? Clav?

On appeasement @Clavinova just how many millions did the Tory party get from the Russians? & in return for what exactly?

Sunak could be ok but he is screwed over by the far right in his party, a far right which believes in hanging innocent people.... no chance of committing crimes after that....

Well the latest poll has had
Labour hit 50 percent and the Conservatives down to 22 percent

[Weighted by likelihood to vote, excluding those who would not vote, don’t know or refused]

Anyway, here's another poll from yesterday:
Redfield & Wilton Strategies
Labour leads by 28% in the Red Wall, enough to win ALL 40 of these seats in the next GE

Interesting table here (the latest YouGov poll is included);

www.markpack.org.uk/155623/voting-intention-opinion-poll-scorecard/

YouGov and Redfield & Wilton both predict the highest leads for Labour amongst the pollsters (Conservatives -28% and -27%) but some recent polls show a narrower lead e.g. Opinium, Survation, Savanta (Conservatives -16% and -17%).

So would it seem that Starmer had got it right in dealing with Corbyn then?

LexMitior · 22/02/2023 18:35

@Clavinova - of course polls have their issues and not conclusive. But even on these figures, partial as they are, Sunak's Conservatives are not competitive with Labour. And other polls (I prefer Politico) would show about 46 to 25 in Labour. These are very bad results.

Starmer is polling a little better than Sunak also. I don't think he's suddenly going to get a charisma injection but I don't think he needs one. The Conservatives need people to feel richer and then and only then will they be competitive with Labour.

I think, if the Tories can start making people feel that the UK isn't falling to bits, then that have a very slim chance but to do that in 18months is a huge ask, i guess thats why they want or appear to want, to end these strikes.

Quite honestly, i'd love it if Bojo got back to no10, it would guarantee the Cons defeat at the next GE, people see through him for what he is now.

LexMitior · 22/02/2023 18:52

@Clavinova - I think Starmer's relative lack of star quality may matter less than conventional political thinking would usually dictate. They do like people like Johnson because he's exciting, speaks the same language and he can be good with words though I think he's better on the page than in person.

The reason to compare Starmer to Johnson is not to just say "hey he's not as charismatic as Johnson". True. But I think that is part of the ticket. These figures are not just about policy; or a personality. It's a country who is tired of drama. That I think includes Johnson; his own party is exhausted by his behaviour, song I think Starmer is profiting from that. People get tired of drama. They want things to work. Particularly when they are feeling like they have less money, less control.

Johnson's pretend Brexit drama is a mistake. Yes it's an appeal to the hard core. But there are not enough of them to make a competitive Conservative campaign either.

@Clavinova All the available evidence shows that the last 3 Prime Ministers were the worst this country has had in anyones lifetime. Once could debate who was absolutely the worst, two of them broke the law while in high office and the other crashed the economy in less than a month after coming into office It is not really that much a stretch of imagination to suppose that Jeremy Corbyn would have been better. How much better one could debate, but better he would have been.

That's funny, because Wikipedia tells me that Lubov Chernukhin moved to the UK in 1999 (Labour government) and her husband was given sanctuary in the UK in 2004 - Labour government again.

I think the point @Clavinova is making is that Jeremy Corbyn is their prefered choice of leader of the Conservative party.
