Our tumble dryer packed up so me and hubs made a dash to the launderette stuck our clothes on 45 minutes, left thinking nothing really of it we went to do some shopping that took around 50 to find someone had removed all our washing from the tumble dryer?!!

What! We wernt running massively over time and this launderette is not overly even use, It wasn’t even fully dried could of done with maybe ten more minutes! The only thing I can think of is us using “the big tumble dryer” but would you seriously remove anyones clothes at the launderette?!??

Maybe it’s been a while for me but it wouldn’t really enter my mind to touch anyone else’s stuff!

This is how communal laundrettes work.

The basis of many sitcoms, soaps etc.

Ponderingwindow · 18/02/2023 17:03

Honestly, you got lucky that no one took out your wet clothes and stole your dryer time. Leaving the dryer unattended is always a risk.

other customers are perfectly entitled to remove your items if the cycle has finished and you left the premises

In hindsight I was unreasonable but it was after valentines I had my small in that wash so the wash it was more embarrassed I guess lol

Eh?

Clean washing, OP. Clean washing.

If you'd tossed a load of knickers stained with shit and blood on the floor and someone had moved them, on the other hand, then you might have a reason to be embarrassed.

Drip feed a'coming.... 😁

PriamFarrl · 18/02/2023 17:06

So it was your sexy undies that you were worried about? Or some other made up bollocks You shouldn’t really put them through the tumble dryer anyway.

ThinWomansBrain · 18/02/2023 17:08

How was anyone to know when you might deign to return?
Using a machine that had just finished would be more efficient - it's already warm.
Haven't used a launderette in decades, but we have a communal laundry in my apartment block - of course people remove stuff if the owner doesn't come back when the run has completed.

ReneBumsWombats · 18/02/2023 17:08

I once travelled to America with several bondage items in my suitcase. I realised it was going to be seen by security but a) it was hold luggage so they weren't going to see me and b) I figured they'd probably only be jealous.

I doubt it would have been their first time either.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 18/02/2023 17:08

I don’t understand what weird about handling someone else’s laundry to move it from a dryer, OP. It’s literally just been cleaned and dried.

What’s the problem with touched freshly cleaned fabric?

Babsexxx · 18/02/2023 17:09

Yeah hubs said I was completely ridiculous and asked had I of cared if my little outfit was in that load? I said well no….him there you go he was really glad someone took it out lol ffs!

OP posts:
WiIson · 18/02/2023 17:10

Yes if it's finished I'll move it out. I wouldn't wait around as I have no idea how long they will be.

Babsexxx · 18/02/2023 17:11

Love this lol xx

Yes sorry I was the asshole here I know if push comes to shove againwhat I should do is use small dryers times two x

How was anyone to know when you would be back?

They may know how long you've been gone, and they may know how long your washing has sat in the dryer after the cycle has finished.

But the ONLY person who knew when you would be back... was you.

Most of the launderettes round here have a manager hidden away out back somewhere and they regularly come round and tip out anything thats done its cycle and is unattended, regardless of how many washers/dryers are free.

If you're significantly longer than 5 minutes then you'll also get a bollocking.

I think the take home message is - if you don't want people touching your washing, then you'll need to be there BEFORE the program finishes.

It really doesn't matter if you think it is unreasonable or outrageous to touch someone elses washing - in launderettes people will, and people do.

Or just be back in time for the big dryer finishing, or just accept that if you're not there, someone else can use it.

You're paying for a service. So is everyone else. When your paid for portion of time is up, someone else is entitled to start there's, whether you're there or not. Why should people wait around with their wet clothes to see if you're planning to rock back up at some point?

YABU

Yes, especially as ime it’s rare to have ppl running 5 mins late.
I was lucky to be close, but it’s extremely irritating to turn up an hour later (because you don’t want to try ten times to see if they’ve come back) with all the heavy washing, and nope, not back yet. Is my time worth less ?
I wouldn’t put it on the floor, but I’d say a good half of ppl who just know they’ll be late leave the laundry bag in front of the machine, then it’s fair game. I mean I’m here to be clean too, it’s not like I’m likely to soil your stuff by taking out a couple of big bulks

amicissimma · 18/02/2023 17:16

You were lucky that a) your laundry was all still there and b) that it was mostly dry.

You must use a more respectable launderette than I have. IME people take out abandoned drying and use the paid for time themselves. And knicking other people's clothes isn't unknown, either. Best to keep an eye on your stuff and paid-for time.

And I don't get how someone moving your washing from one place to another is problematical. Very delicate fabrics that could be damaged wouldn't withstand a tumble dryer.

soboredtonight · 18/02/2023 17:16

If you use a launderette regularly then you will know some dryers are better than others. Or they are a creature of habit and prefer that dryer.

I've removed drying before and folded it nicely. Not smalls , but general washing I have folded nicely not just lashed on the side. Maybe that's wrong too but it seems rude to just pull out and leave messy for someone to come back to.

No you’re completely entitled to use the same things
But if you’re going to use a different one than the huge ones, you need to respect times.
I understand you’re not used to the system, but rare people only turn up five minutes late, that’s the main problem, if that makes better sense ?
Most people are early

soboredtonight · 18/02/2023 17:19

I do this as I lived in flats once that had washers and dryers for communal use and this is what everyone did for each other.

Around twenty tenants.

No one took the piss and removed wet or damp washing but did remove dry washing so as to use the dryer etc. everyone was very considerate and would even transfer wet washing to the dryer for each other to free up machines.

JusteanBiscuits · 18/02/2023 17:22

You said you took the big dryer. One session on big dryer is generally cheaper than two on smaller machines. Some people saving that money makes a difference.

You're being very precious about something that is perfectly normal.

I honestly don’t fold, I’m not rough either, but just put it back in the laundry basket like probably most people would do, with a bit of extra effort if it’s one of those expensive dryers. I mean, I don’t shove it in, but I wouldn’t fold it.

And as it’s been mentioned quite a few times, most people arrive early, if you want to guarantee you’ll find your laundry still there

soboredtonight · 18/02/2023 17:24

@Godlovesall26 I just followed others example in this case.

Untitledsquatboulder · 18/02/2023 17:26

Babsexxx · 18/02/2023 15:25

Because why would anyone touch anyone else’s washing maybe that

Because they want to use the drier with waiting, what - 5, 10, 20 min - to see when you'll be back.

Want to keep other people off your wash? Then aim to be there 5 min before it's done.

Moveoverdarlin · 18/02/2023 17:27

I haven’t used a launderette since uni but what you have explained is perfectly acceptable behaviour. Why are you making such a big deal about someone touching your clean washing?

WonderingWanda · 18/02/2023 17:28

Missing the point but 45 mins in the big tumble seems a really long time. My drier at home can do it quicker than that and the one in our local launderette can dry a king size duvet in less than half that time.
