Our tumble dryer packed up so me and hubs made a dash to the launderette stuck our clothes on 45 minutes, left thinking nothing really of it we went to do some shopping that took around 50 to find someone had removed all our washing from the tumble dryer?!!

What! We wernt running massively over time and this launderette is not overly even use, It wasn’t even fully dried could of done with maybe ten more minutes! The only thing I can think of is us using “the big tumble dryer” but would you seriously remove anyones clothes at the launderette?!??

Maybe it’s been a while for me but it wouldn’t really enter my mind to touch anyone else’s stuff!

If they did I’d pay for there washing heartbreaking

So you never use a launderette. The first time you used one things ran contrary to your expectation.
People here are telling you why but you still seem to think you've got it right and everyone else does it wrong?

Now you know - if you are even a few minutes late, people will remove your clothes.

Lostinadream24 · 18/02/2023 16:49

I get what you are saying.
I wouldn't fancy touching anyone else's washing either, nor would I want them touching mine.

Hotcrossbunnowplease · 18/02/2023 16:49

Not the point of your post but why would you go out to dry your laundry, why wouldn’t you just hang it up? Yes dryers are convenient but hanging stuff up is surely easier than going somewhere else to dry it…

Babsexxx · 18/02/2023 16:09

I posted here as I don’t have any experience with a launderette, not sure how many are grown women given the responses lol

Funny, I was just wondering whether you were a grown up. You sound like an entitled teenager or a kid on a wind up 🙄@Babsexxx

Stravaig · 18/02/2023 16:50

Blimey. In my day you might put a wash on and run errands nearby, because the door locks during the cycle. But never the dryer, because the door could be opened at any time, and usually was, to check how dry before feeding more coins. Or removed if done, by anyone at all.

In fact, launderettes used to have an attendant who would check and empty unattended machines to keep things moving. Has modern tech changed public laundry etiquette so much?

If you used the only large dryer for ordinary clothes YABVVU.
If you used a large dryer for a large item YA still BU.
If the next person simply preferred your pre-warmed dryer YABU.
If you expect other people to wait around until you deign to return YABVU.
Being a princess about your laundry in a launderette makes you hilariously U.

Sorry, haven’t the time right now to read the whole thread but will try to later.
Yes, absolutely normal.
The solution that can help is to leave a laundry basket facing your laundry so it will be put in there safely.
Its honestly considered a little disrespectful to not respect your timing.

I get what you are saying.
I wouldn't fancy touching anyone else's washing either, nor would I want them touching mine.

Nobody removes someone's washing from the laundry to fulfil some deviant desire. I can't see what's so icky about touching freshly washed clothes anyway.

They remove it so they can use the machine. That's all.

Babsexxx · 18/02/2023 16:51

I was genuinely not aware especially if there are other machines to use! Sorry for thinking people shouldn’t be handled especially peoples washing! I thought this was ridiculous as there was other options?

Undertheoldlindentree · 18/02/2023 16:52

OP, I have been using launderettes for over thirty years - mostly drying. I assure you nobody would go to the bother of removing your washing if there was another drier of the same size free. Most people like the large drier as it only costs say £5 to dry a large load that would cost £8 split across two smaller machines. Or they have a duvet etc. Why should they waste their time or money because of you?

If you are saying there were driers of the same size free when you got back, I bet they were occupied when the poor time-pressed person had to steel themselves to touch your washing so they could put their own in. The other large driers may have come free a few minutes later - just before you turned up. So it is all pointing towards you making this story up (troll?), or it was a very 'elastic' five minutes.

Beginning to hope you've lost a sock in the transfer - LaunderetteKarma!

Babsexxx · 18/02/2023 16:53

If every dryer was in use no way would I post as that would truly be ridiculous but there where plenty of other dryers!

But perhaps what they wanted to dry wouldn’t fit in the smaller dryer. You were using the only big one.

As people have explained, it sounds as though you were using the biggest dryer. That's why someone chose to use it once it was finished rather than the smaller ones. Presumably that's why you chose it?

And there's nothing strange about moving someone's freshly washed clothes to use the machine. Honestly, if you think that's deviant, I could tell you some stories that would make your hair curl...

I only replied mine because you mentioned you used the huge one. It’s expensive to outsource laundry, so makes sense other people would equally want it.
Also, they couldn’t I imagine have known if you’d be 5 min or an hour late.
But yes, it’s not ‘standard practice’ but is done if there’s clearly a laundry basket underneath ( obv throwing on the floor would be different). But yes, people Id imagine couldn’t know when you’d be back.

ReneBumsWombats · 18/02/2023 16:57

I think that if there's no basket nearby, you put the clothes on top of the machine or on a nearby table if there is one.

Babsexxx · 18/02/2023 16:58

In hindsight I was unreasonable but it was after valentines I had my small in that wash so the wash it was more embarrassed I guess lol

I Just wouldn’t think for a second that anyone would touch anyone else’s washing! That’s crazy to me!

You are absolutely right. This is shocking. People should just wait for you to finish your shopping. It’s not like they anything better to do if they are just sitting around in a laundrette, right?

Maybe next time ask the laundrette if they can set a tumble dryer aside just for you.

Oh, the entitlement!

Yeah but they needed the big one. And they didn't know when you were coming back. You need to relax.

Most loads will have pants in them. Nobody cares. They've just been washed.

ReneBumsWombats · 18/02/2023 16:59

And anyway, they don't know who you are.

amonsteronthehill · 18/02/2023 17:00

You're paying for a service. So is everyone else. When your paid for portion of time is up, someone else is entitled to start there's, whether you're there or not. Why should people wait around with their wet clothes to see if you're planning to rock back up at some point?

YABU

@Babsexxx I don’t think people would have cared what was in it tbh.
However I would strongly advise you if you use public ones ( they should have time apps for ending, even if delayed) to arrive early, if you want to find your clothes at all

TheShellBeach · 18/02/2023 17:02

Of course someone took your washing out. Your time was complete. The dryer was needed for somebody else.

Were you expecting someone to put some money in and finish your washing off for you?

Nevermind31 · 18/02/2023 17:02

You are costing the laundrette money by blocking one of their machines, and wasting other people’s time.
THEY didn’t know you would only be 5 mins.
but… why didn’t you just line dry???
