Our tumble dryer packed up so me and hubs made a dash to the launderette stuck our clothes on 45 minutes, left thinking nothing really of it we went to do some shopping that took around 50 to find someone had removed all our washing from the tumble dryer?!!

What! We wernt running massively over time and this launderette is not overly even use, It wasn’t even fully dried could of done with maybe ten more minutes! The only thing I can think of is us using “the big tumble dryer” but would you seriously remove anyones clothes at the launderette?!??

Maybe it’s been a while for me but it wouldn’t really enter my mind to touch anyone else’s stuff!

No I think it's quite reasonable if the cycle had finished and people were waiting to use it.,

OutofEverything · 18/02/2023 15:57

This is literally the way laundrettes work.

Regularsizedrudy · 18/02/2023 15:58

“AIBU?”

”yes”

”no I’m not!”

Anactor · 18/02/2023 15:58

Yes, you broke the first rule of launderette etiquette. Which is, it’s fine to leave your stuff and do other things but you must be back by the time the machine stops.

It’s especially fierce over the dryers, because a lot of customers just need the dryers.

Sounds like they’ve had problems before and the attendants just remove anything left unattended when the dryer stops.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 18/02/2023 15:58

I think it is a bit like towels on seats at a hotel pool. The seats are shared - so only yours while you are on them. Leaving towels in your place is not acceptable :)

I expect the person concerned needed a big drier... perhaps for the same reasons you did?

They would have had no way of knowing if you were going to be 5 mins or 5 hours. People are thoughtless and do just leave to do other things sometimes.

MummyDummyNow · 18/02/2023 16:00

Why bother asking OP as you clearly think you're not being unreasonable and have absolutely no interest in others opinions.

Babsexxx · 18/02/2023 16:00

Well no I wouldn’t leave my towels down on holiday and expect for my places to be there completely different if people had 8 free dryers I think it’s a bit different

Well the time on the dryer was a dead giveaway lol

So there I am, a machine full of wet washing waiting for the only big dryer.

The time on the dryer runs out but the person whose washing it is nowhere to be seen.

Do I:
a) hang around until that person comes back, with no idea if the will be 5 minutes or 5 hours?
b) spend more money drying my washing than it would cost using the big dryer? (Bear in mind that people with loads of spare money don’t tend to use laundrettes)
c) take out the washing of the absent person and use the dryer?

Companyofwolves · 18/02/2023 16:01

Ok well carry on as you are & get annoyed when it happens again.

seekingafreshstart · 18/02/2023 16:02

There was only one big drier.

You wanted some stranger to pay 25% more than they had to just because you weren't back on time. Cost of living is hard for many people - why should they pay an extra £2?

Clearly, no one wanted to touch your laundry. You put them in a position where they had to. The person to be mad at is yourself, OP. You were unreasonable.

Babsexxx · 18/02/2023 16:03

I’m not saying anyones wrong here but some comparisons are a bit ridiculous! I just said this is far from a busy launderette and there was other options I wouldn’t like to think I impacted on anyones day but I don’t think I did and to comeback go still 8 dryers empty was a bit shocking.

How was it? They could see your washing had finished. You weren’t there. How long were they expected to wait with your stuff just sitting in there? They had no idea when you were coming back.
I haven’t used a laundrette since I was a student but the rule was that if you weren’t there when it was finished, someone could remove it. You’ve paid for a particular length of time.

This. ^ Such a ludicrous and daft thing to do. Ask 'AIBU?' on mumsnet, and then get all sniffy and huffy because most people say 'yes YABU.' Whilst throwing your toys out of the pram, spitting your dummy out, and saying 'NO NO NO !!! I am NOT wrong wah wah wah!!!' 😢😭

Exactly. I always took the exact change needed to the laundrette, so if I’d counted on £8 for use of the big dryer then I couldn’t have just split it between 2 £5 dryers.

Babsexxx · 18/02/2023 16:06

Actually I think your wrong it costs me a lot more to use a launderette just saying!

i wouldn’t make people wait hours that’s ridiculous and completely out of order!

i would be more understanding but 5 minutes I can’t really comprehend.

As it was only 5 minutes, presumably the other persons washing was still in the dryer. Did you confront them?

(oh, and op, it helps when replying to people of you quote them)

UpCloseAndPersonalWithGlenda · 18/02/2023 16:07

YABU for saying "hubs".

I Just wouldn’t think for a second that anyone would touch anyone else’s washing! That’s crazy to me!

Well they're not psychic, so if they needed the dryer hie long did you want them to wait for? Yabu.

JackiePlace · 18/02/2023 16:09

Ha ha, I thought you meant someone stole your clothes! Removing them isn't unreasonable if someone needs to use the dryer.

Babsexxx · 18/02/2023 16:09

I posted here as I don’t have any experience with a launderette, not sure how many are grown women given the responses lol

You really don’t get it do you.

How did they know it was going to be 5 minutes? All they saw was the time run out on your machine.

And yes using a laundrette is more expensive than using your own machine but to have a machine you have to have a house/flat that is big enough and enough money to buy a machine.

I don’t know many grown women who use ‘lol’.

Babsexxx · 18/02/2023 16:11

No they had actually left for washing to dry themselves

DeedlessIndeed · 18/02/2023 16:12

OP, everyone else is saying this is standard, that you should not take it personally and there is a valid reason why it is moved (big drier, preheated).

Okay, maybe you were initially shocked and felt it was an invasion of privacy, because you weren't aware of the etiquette. But now it has been explained I don't understand why you are still so outraged?
