To give up on heels?

Mimmi78 · 17/02/2023 17:41

I have had a life long love affair with heels, tall, shiny, colours, kittens, courts and sky highs.
Roll forward to working from home since 2020 and now spend one day a week in my Central London office.
I have recently found a whole day in them excruciating and painful. just can't wear heels all day anymore! I have been lugging them about in a bag and do the train to office in trainers and any other walking!
Aibu - just keep lugging them about like the rest of us!
Yanbu- Join the revolution and here are some fabulous feel good but not horrid alternatives!

@Nimbostratus100 the line “it’s up to them” is very much at odds with the rest of your post. The thought of one group of women silently judging, looking down on and writing off another, is just horrible

having said that, I will judge and judge hard anyone who wears Irregular Choice shoes @Youainttheonlyone as they are also horrible 😆

😂😂😂😂 Oh I agree wholeheartedly most of them are vile!!! But to be fair they did do a really nice one in the dazzle razzle range and it’s honestly lovely. I have it in black patent and the “lace effect” over the top takes the “school shoe” shine off so it’s honestly beautiful. You wouldn’t think it’s an irregular choice shoe as it’s very classy and understated

I hate them and hate seeing women wear them. A woman in heels is always less physically capable than a woman in flat shoes

They were originally military, to remain on your horse during cavalry charges - they became phetishised and used to disable women. - its gross

I can never feel the same respect for a woman if I see them wearing heels, whether they are an employee, a manager, or anything.

Why put on in item of clothing which has no function whatsoever except to disable the female wearer for the pleasure of the male observers?

Bit much. Are you always so extreme in your views on what other women wear?

well, no, because no other "fashion item" in our society is deliberately designed to disable women for the pleasure of men

It affects me directly by continuing to bolster up the patriarchy and undermine woman's lib

And because it costs the NHS millions

And nothing else that any woman wears impacts on me like that

Nimbostratus100 · 23/02/2023 13:43

I am absolutely horrified to read on this thread of school teachers wearing them - the worst possible role model to be parading around in the sight of young girls

To me this would come under "bringing the profession into disrepute"

I have to agree.
I don’t even see women who work in banks wearing them anymore, and that’s really a professional setting. I see bank women usually in a pair of navy or black trousers and matching blazer, a nice elegant shirt underneath and flat, comfortable shoes.
You have to go to Vegas nowadays to see high heels on strippers.

Ballet flats can be very uncomfortable. It’s all of the cheap ones out there. I have some leather ones with a proper sole. No plastic shoes is one of my rules in life! (wore plenty of plastic shoes, years ago too).

Don't you mean 'vegan leather' 😆

Not everyone has to like these but they won't deform your feet.

Suede Cherry
Blue loafers
Glitter flats
Mocassin
sandals
flats
with jeans and long skirts

Maison Toufet... Have you bought from there?

I haven't heard of them before, but the two pairs you shared are lovely!

OoooohMatron · 23/02/2023 14:22

OP yes to loafers, they look great. I'm actually starting a new office job soon and have been debating about shoes. I have the same problem as a PP, in that I'm short and I have chunky, short calves (lucky me) so honestly flats just make me feel dumpy. I've settled on loafers with a block heel, which according to a certain poster will make me unprofessional and shit and my new job, not to mention a terrible role model for my daughter 😆

BitOutOfPractice · 23/02/2023 15:26

@latticeleaf omg those are all so gorgeous. I have saved your post to do a little browse on those sites. Thank you!

BitOutOfPractice · 23/02/2023 15:28

And @Nimbostratus100 you’re starting to sound a little bonkers now. but thanks for the throwback. I’ve not heard the term “women’s lib” for years!

Long hair, low cut tops, tight skirts, make-up etc..are pretty harmless. Surely, you can’t put these things in the same category as high heels because it would be pretty daft. I could walk around in tight skirts, low cut tops and caked in make-up all day and wouldn’t even feel it.
High heels are bad for your feet, legs, knees, hips, back, whole posture, the whole shebang. They are way much higher on the extremities list of what women wear.
It takes a certain brain washing for women to accept that wearing them is okay. It’s similar to the foot binding of Chinese women in the past, or wearing corsets, crinoline and all that bull crap while sitting sideways on a galloping horse.

I’m not sure that low-cut tops, tight clothing, push-up bras etc are harm-free? It takes a particular form of brainwashing to believe that physical harm is the only harm…

There is harm everywhere. But I’m pretty sure my granny’s generation, in their smart 1940s court shoes, didn’t cost the NHS ££££ in shoe-related trauma 😂

This thread is bizarre.

ExasperatedbyJanuary · 23/02/2023 16:19

Just for interest’s sake, I’ve just done a quick Google of ‘Next women’s shoes’ - so a fairly staple store for professional women to frequent… Of the 40 top thumbnail images, 26 were of heels. Varying kinds - kitten, wedge, stiletto etc.

So looks like all those ‘no one wears heels’ and the hyperbolic mock horror might be… bullshit!

I think women are capable of deciding if they can handle a night out in a pair of heels. I mean, drinking half a bottle of wine isn’t great for your health, but I hope the extremists on this thread aren’t going to suggest we shouldn’t be able to choose to do that once in a while… 🤷‍♀️

IsaacNewtonPoppleford · 23/02/2023 16:44

Of course. They are not obligatory, and the idea that formal dress can only be achieved wearing them (for women) is an anacronism these days.

I also loved my heels (although only for going out, not for workwear above the age of about 19) but my feet have changed shape over time, and no longer have natural cushioning. I can't wear my lovely heeled boots and I couldn't find replacements that I wanted to wear for even a few hours and the ones that felt okay didn't look good. Even when I wear certain (most?) flat shoes for work or other long periods, I feel it in my hips and knees for weeks. I intend to be sprightly and having fun for as long as possible with people asking me my secret (good shoes!) not hobbling around.

There are lots of nice flats and you will see celebs and even some executive-types wearing all sorts including brogues, blingy trainers, bright white ones, slides, flat mules and so on, at all sorts of occasions including red carpets. Find what works for you, and make it a feature IMHO.

You can also make any style of flats fancier with a bit of haberdashery and some superglue, if you want to (like Gok Wan did with clothes on his programme some time ago) 😆

I went into clarks yesterday, a small shop admittedly and not a heel in sight! It was all flats/ pumps. I know they used to do heels and may well still do in bigger stores as I have some from a few years back.
But none in this little store so maybe the OP is on to something.

I like a nice heel 👠 now and then so I don't want them to disappear completely.

verdantverdure · 23/02/2023 17:21

Is it a trans thing? A reaction against that exaggerated hyper sexualised idea of a woman?

I've said earlier in the thread that I sort of shocked myself with my reaction to a senior professional woman dressed like an Apprentice contestant in a bodycon sleeveless workwear dress that probably has a matching jacket, and a pair of stilettos.

I'm not sure what has caused this shift, but I am so certain that I'm not wearing high heels ever again that I've sold/donated mine.

Even my low heeled but wobbly wedge boots are currently on the potential chopping block. I want to feel sure footed and don't want to be held back by my footwear.

I think I wore heels because I felt you needed to to look polished and professional.

Whereas now I think high heels look a bit "wrong" in the workplace. Not classy. Not serious. And a bit like a dressing up costume.

Yes, I have bought from there. Same shoe in 2 colours.

britinnyc · 23/02/2023 19:53

Heels aren’t dated. Maybe a traditional high heeled court shoe isn’t the most fashionable these days but there plenty of people wearing boots with a heel (heeled cowboy style boots are very popular right now), platform heeled sandals etc. Some outfits look better with a heel, some better with flats.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 23/02/2023 20:10

I thought I was over heels, then I saw the pics of Monica Belluci today with her new beau Tim Burton. She had platform designer heels on with a huge elegant coat and looked, just gorgeous. I couldn't be arsed to wear them, but I don't think they are over just yet.

Oysterbabe · 23/02/2023 20:20

Anyone watching Dragon's den? The woman pitching on there is in sky high heels. She's already disabled, madness that she would add to her mobility difficulties.

They will never be over. They look amazing. I don't care how much people on here try to convince themselves!

Oh for sure, if I was Monica Bellucci and therefore short, rich and my living depended on looking papparazzi-worthy in public, I'd wear them on a night out. Not those particular Louboutins though because they look like a broken ankle waiting to happen.

But I think my own somewhat more modest and mundane life can continue happily without heels in it.

OnTheRoll · 24/02/2023 07:14

I have a long body and in flats feel like my ass is too low and legs short. The heels balance me out. I have always worn them (in my 40s now) and not going to give up. I choose good brands so the are comfortable. I wear knee-high boots, ankle-high boots, court shoes, sandals - all wiling heels. Having said that, I do prefer block heels over stilettos, they are sturdier.

I find it weird and frankly not nice when women on this thread berate others for wearing heels for doing it for men's gaze and that the heels look outdated. What a ridiculous thought. Heels look stylish, they add a spring to the step - if you don't like them that's fine but it does not mean that others are stupid for wearing them.
