To give up on heels?

Mimmi78 · 17/02/2023 17:41

I have had a life long love affair with heels, tall, shiny, colours, kittens, courts and sky highs.
Roll forward to working from home since 2020 and now spend one day a week in my Central London office.
I have recently found a whole day in them excruciating and painful. just can't wear heels all day anymore! I have been lugging them about in a bag and do the train to office in trainers and any other walking!
Aibu - just keep lugging them about like the rest of us!
Yanbu- Join the revolution and here are some fabulous feel good but not horrid alternatives!

I like a nice mid heel, there's certain point where the trade off between heel height and wearability factor cross and I like to keep just under it.

More than 4 cm or so and I'm out

I think 4cm counts as low heel. Mid-heel is 5-7.5cm.

verdantverdure · 19/02/2023 15:35

My friend still has heels in her wardrobe for work, but she's a dominatrix.

Scooopsahoy · 19/02/2023 15:43

I think over the next few years heels will become associated with women of 45-65 ish, especially in a work setting. It’s getting rarer for women under forty to wear heels at work nowadays in my experience

And once heels are firmly associated with that 45+ generation they’re not going to be something that younger women aspire to!

BitOutOfPractice · 19/02/2023 15:45

These! 😍 @Calphurnia88

rothbury · 19/02/2023 16:01

@Scooopsahoy I am late fifties and nobody I know would be seen dead in heels!!!

These! 😍 @Calphurnia88

Love them!

Also can't go wrong with Russell & Bromley.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 19/02/2023 16:08

One of the positives that has come out of losing my mobility and needing a wheelchair has been No More Heels! 😂😂

Nobody judges when I am out in my trainers. And I have quite a nice selection, patterned converse, cath kidston design, patterned adidas. I love them all.

I always hated heels and completely resented having to wear them on nights out or at events.

Scooopsahoy · 19/02/2023 16:10

@rothbury Fair enough! I guess I meant that I see women wear heels pretty rarely, and when I do it is nearly always women 45+. Which does mean there are many women 45+ who never wear heels.

Alliswells · 19/02/2023 16:21

Heels are very old fashioned now. Apart from the apprentice love island big lips type nobody wears them

5128gap · 19/02/2023 16:32

I haven't worn them since 2020 except on nights out. It's been life changing. No longer have to worry about how far I have to walk (I'd have been that 'unprofessional muppet' in the cab referred to above😊) and I'm faster and fitter. I doubt I'll go back.
Its not without some regret though. I've several pairs and they are things of great beauty. I love the way they look on.

I hate them and hate seeing women wear them. A woman in heels is always less physically capable than a woman in flat shoes

They were originally military, to remain on your horse during cavalry charges - they became phetishised and used to disable women. - its gross

I can never feel the same respect for a woman if I see them wearing heels, whether they are an employee, a manager, or anything.

Why put on in item of clothing which has no function whatsoever except to disable the female wearer for the pleasure of the male observers?

The irony and you thinking less of a woman because of what she chooses to wear.

(Never wear heels by the way but to think less of a woman because they do is bananas)

TheGoogleMum · 19/02/2023 16:50

I haven't worn heels in years! Too painful. Give them up go for comfort :)

I actually agree with labamba007
When I see women in high heels (who wear them regularly on a daily basis) I just find them pathetic. They don’t seem confident enough without their ridiculous shoes.
Who are they trying to impress? Other women? Men? Nobody gives a shit!
The way they wobble is ridiculous and I find the constant clip-clop sound of their heels annoying enough to cross the road to the other side.

Wait, isn't that the opposite of what @labamba007 said?

Yeah I'm a lightweight. If I can't walk home in them, no deal.

verdantverdure · 19/02/2023 17:32

I don't intend to judge anyone for what they wear, but I realised this week that I don't react to

people who dress like contestants on The Apprentice in those bodycpn sleeveless "workwear" dresses and stilettos as if they are serious people, and I think stilettos are a bit low class as well as very dated now.

I'm not proud of it, but that was my reaction. I'm working on it.

How strange that you're so invested in what other women dress themselves in. Is it just heels or do you judge women for wearing anything that might make them feel more attractive? Must we all dress in hessian sacks to meet your approval?

Anyway, keeping on point, these are the flats I've just bought for work. I don't expect they'll offer much support so I'll wear trainers on the commute.

IchWill · 19/02/2023 17:52

I'm in same boat. I've got about 200 pairs of shoes that I've amassed over 30 years, I have loads of gorgeous 6" and 7" stilettos. I've even listed my shoes in my will. 😅

Before lockdown I comfortably wore 4"-5" heels every day to work. I was so used to heels, I couldn't wear flats as it hurt my calves, I could even run in heels.

Since lockdown, I now am like Bambi on ice in heels. All those years of practice, gone! 🤣

I'd suggest that if you no longer want your heels, then wear flats. Or take a change of shoes if you want to strut about in them during the day.

PS: Beware. If you decide to sell any of your shoes, if any men message you asking to see a photo of them on, they are just after wank bank material.

What a weird response. Whenever I wear heels, I wear them for ME.

To me, they look good, make me more confident as I'm taller and they finish off an outfit. How pathetic of me!

I expect you live in Crocs?

And yes, I hate Crocs. But I'd never think another woman pathetic for her choice of footwear.

Nimbostratus100 · 19/02/2023 18:46

I think the reason for this contention, is that some women , whether they personally wear heels or not, see it as a neutral act, whereas many women ( and I am one!) see it as a specific political antifeminist statement

To me, it isnt a case of judging what someone is wearing just as clothing but judging that someone is actively choosing to conform to the patriarchy, and play the role of a physically incapable woman, for the pleasure of men.

I think if women are walking round in heels without realising how that makes ( some) other women feel and respond to them, (and actually, some men dont like it for the same reasons - they dont want women disabling themselves to try and get into favour!) then this thread can only open their eyes to that - if they still choose to wear heels, its up to them

And if you think I am unfair to respond to heels like that, well, I am aware some women disagree with me.

PinkSyCo · 19/02/2023 19:12

YABU to ask people to ‘join the revolution’ when most women with any sense gave up on heels after a few wears because we don’t like crippling ourselves for the sake of fashion.

It's one thing to say that women wear heels as a result of historical pressure (subconsciously or otherwise) from the patriarchy, but to say you find women who wear heels pathetic - as @Cinecitta did - is another.

I used to regularly wear heels for work (currently on mat leave). I have been in a senior management position for several years, own my own house and have a happy and fulfilled life. To think that someone would consider me pathetic because I used to wear heels is frankly ridiculous.
