What did she want people to do?

Recently went to spectate at a sporting event and we got on the tram to get there. It was rammed, we expected it to be rammed. It's a busy event.

The tram was standing room only, and it was busy Ie sardines.

This pregnant woman was standing in the middle of the aisle she wouldn't move further down so there was a huge gap behind her. She didn't look that pregnant tbh, she kept shouting. im pregnant, I need space, you all need to back off, I'm pregnant I need a seat im pregnant I can't be touched
The only people sat down were kids and old people and the families didn't offer her a seat. The guard came down and told her she needed to move down into the gap or get off. She decided to get off and then asked if the trams were going to be busy all day?

She genuinely wanted random strangers to not go to the rugby because she enforced a halo of 'im pregnant and no one can be near me'

Surely if you're that precious about being pregnant you'd get a taxi?

I'm calling bullshit on this thread.

The OP has only bothered to reply a couple of times and hasn't explained how a tram full of rugby spectators saw only elderly and children seated. What's the seating capacity of a tram?

The OP has exaggerated, stirred the pot, and fucked off.

The pregnant woman got off the tram. And is now being accused of all sorts on MN (if she exists)

Either BS or she hasn't got the answer she expected/wanted and has done a runner.

Rmw12 · 19/02/2023 09:34

I doesn’t sound like she didn’t want people to go to the rugby. It just sounds like she was upset that no one offered her a seat. She could have experienced fertility problems or miscarriages and be really anxious about her pregnancy. Maybe it’s a regular journey for her and she’s not able to afford to take a taxi. I feel sad that no one offered her a seat when she was obviously distressed.

I’d be more horrified that there were kids sitting down while adults were standing. No manners these days just entitlement. Any child over the age of 8 should have stood. I travel a lot and children in other countries wouldn’t dream of sitting whilst an adult stood.

Yes, yes they would. Because you have poor parenting in every country in the world.

I can only say what I’ve seen. In countries like Barbados or Italy etc it most certainly wouldn’t happen. Are you an expert on public transport abroad.

It's much safer for an adult to stand than a child, for starts our bones are fully formed so less likely to break in an accident. Secondly we are taller so can grab better anchor points. Just because other countries don't care about kids doesn't mean we shouldn't.

And this answer is why this country is failing.

The country is failing because as a 40 yo woman, I'd rather I fall on a bus than my 5 yo and actually, rather than your 5?

I would also rather fall over than have my small child fall. Small kids are much less coordinated than adults and not as physically tall that they can grasp hand rails etc.. Didn’t realise that I was being so selfish by preferring to injure myself than my small child 🙄

Ahhhh I see it now, you didn’t read my original post properly. I purposely put ‘over eight’ in my post but you’ve chosen to ignore that. I also remember my mother sitting me on her knee so a pregnant lad could sit down.

What happens at age eight that kids magically become super coordinated with excellent balance? What if the kid looks 8 bit is actually much younger? Do you ask to check ID?

Boomboom22 · 19/02/2023 12:46

Why can't a 5 or 6 Yr old sit on your lap or even better if your precious 7, 8, 13yr old can't stand give them your own seat and you stand.

AGoldenNarwhal · 19/02/2023 13:36

Utterly gobsmacked by people suggesting children should be sitting while pregnant women are standing.

My older child has been standing up for adults on buses since he was 3 years old. Before that, he was in the buggy or on my lap.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/02/2023 13:37

CountZacular · 18/02/2023 19:37

OP didn’t say anything about 5 year olds. She said ‘kids’ (you know, people up to the age of 18). Do you think the train heaving with rugby fans were all toddlers? But as it happens I have a 5 year old and yes, I would ask him to stand.

Risking your young child falling and getting hurt so you can sit comfortably on a seat doesn't make you the awesome person you think it does.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/02/2023 13:39

T1Dmama · 18/02/2023 20:04

Who said she was screaming?

OP didn't 🤔

@Calphurnia88 - Okay ‘SHOUTING’ then… (talk about splitting hairs!) still not reasonable behaviour. Maybe it is for you…. But I find it very unreasonable that she was SHOUTING at people and possibly scaring elderly and young.

And I'd opt for a modicum of compassion and think that either this lady has a mental health issue in which case in this scenario I'd consider her vulnerable and this be compassionate or that there's something going on in her pregnancy whereby she feels vulnerable but still needed to travel, in which case I'd be compassionate.

Bugbabe1970 · 19/02/2023 16:56

Sounds dramatic
She should have avoided this busy time as it was more than likely she wouldn't be able to get a seat

Don’t be ridiculous. Would you say the same thing for someone with a disability?

When I was pregnant with my first I actually did have a fall on a wet moving bus on my way to my 20 week scan. Luckily it was on my back and whilst I was injured, my now 5 year old was fine. I have a lot of empathy for pregnant women and if they ask to sit, I would let them. I’m well aware of the risks. My child can stand perfectly fine holding on to me.

Kjpt140v · 20/02/2023 19:49

You are overreacting.

Pingu2245 · 20/02/2023 23:05

I mean most of your arguments actually make it better for kids to stand!!

Mothership4two · 21/02/2023 06:22

Whenever I have seen a parent tell their child to stand to give up a seat, they either sit them on a knee or hold on to them unless they are too old to need it.

Travelled quite a lot on buses in Italy as my sister lives there. Not only do teenagers not offer you a seat, on one occasion a YOUNG woman complained that my nephew's foot was touching her because my sister was carrying him, standing up and his little pushchair shoe shod foot had touched her shoulder, and on another an elderly lady asking my sister to make her 4 YEAR OLD stand - which would have been holding on on his own as my sister was seated with a baby.

Rudeness, poor parenting and ignorant f'ers in EVERY country.

Tbf, she wouldn't have known they were pushchair shoes. He could have trod in shit. I wouldn't want a kids shoe touching my clothes, especially if it was a brand new outfit.

LouDeLou · 21/02/2023 13:33

Stating that she could not move down or be touched is just silly. I can only think maybe she didn't think there were suitable points to hold on further down, in which case she should have just moved aside and let people pass. Not sure why you can't be touched FFS!

I travelled into London every weekday whilst pregnant, sometimes I got a seat, sometimes not - once I sat on the floor when really sick, someone noticed me and jumped up, bless them, they'd had their nose in a paper and didn't notice me hyperventilating and starting to sweat. But even then I didn't announce I needed a seat, the floor was just fine.

No one is entitled to a seat over anyone else, even pregnant women... and I wonder what you all would have thought of me when I suffered excruciating sciatica and needed a seat too. Should I have announced to train, "sorry I need this seat myself my back hurts?".

PoseyFlump · 21/02/2023 13:34

Tbf @UdoU if I'd overheard that conversation on a bus I'd wonder how the hell some people dare go outside at all if they're worried about baby shoes. No wonder they're called snowflakes 😂

Well of course not - but we would assume a young woman (or her mate sitting next to her) would have stood up and offered the lady carrying a baby her chair, not complained.
