What did she want people to do?

Recently went to spectate at a sporting event and we got on the tram to get there. It was rammed, we expected it to be rammed. It's a busy event.

The tram was standing room only, and it was busy Ie sardines.

This pregnant woman was standing in the middle of the aisle she wouldn't move further down so there was a huge gap behind her. She didn't look that pregnant tbh, she kept shouting. im pregnant, I need space, you all need to back off, I'm pregnant I need a seat im pregnant I can't be touched
The only people sat down were kids and old people and the families didn't offer her a seat. The guard came down and told her she needed to move down into the gap or get off. She decided to get off and then asked if the trams were going to be busy all day?

She genuinely wanted random strangers to not go to the rugby because she enforced a halo of 'im pregnant and no one can be near me'

Surely if you're that precious about being pregnant you'd get a taxi?

It sounds like she was feeling bloody awful and was desperate for someone to offer her a seat.

MrsMitford3 · 18/02/2023 18:37

I think it is awful that no one offered her a seat.

She may have been saying she didn't want to be touched because she didn't want to be stuck in a crowd with people pressing up against her. I am a little claustrophobic and it was always worse when i was pregnant.

Bit shit for her tbh

Kids should always give up their seats for pregnant women, yhe elderly and vulnerable. She was clearly feeling anxious and maybe did sound a bit over the top but being in a crowded tram isn't pleasant. Where have manners gone? I would've given up my seat and most people I know.

It depends on the age. A young child isn't necessarily safer standing and holding on than someone "old". Someone earlier was talking about kids giving up a seat for anyone over 40 🙄

Divorcedalongtime · 18/02/2023 18:38

I’m with you OP. i hated how people treated me like expensive porcelain when pregnant…

Somethingneedstochange78 · 18/02/2023 18:38

She probably assumed someone would offer her a seat. It wouldn't be a huge sacrifice to sit child on knee and offer. But I wouldn't have put myself in that situation when pregnant. I would rather walk. I walked miles during both pregnancies. It's good exercise and got dc1 to not be so dependant on her buggy before dc2 arrived.

letthemalldoone · 18/02/2023 18:40

I think it's a shocking display of bad manners that no-one offered this mum-to-be a seat! Certainly no 'old fashioned' courtesy around! Even more disgusting to post about it and slate her like this.

Hope you're never vulnerable at some point in your life, need assistance and get ignored, say if you needed resuscitation or CPR and everyone just turned the other way.

As for never being on public transport, whoever that was, I simply don't believe you. Don't you go abroad? Have you never been bussed from one terminal at the airport to another? Never taken a bus or train to explore? Never gone on a school trip? Maybe you charter private jets... 🙄

T1Dmama · 18/02/2023 18:41

when I was heavily pregnant and sat on a bus I gave up my seat for an elderly gentleman…. I don’t understand why people think old people and young families should’ve given up their seats in this situation?…. Yes we might not know ‘how tough being pregnant’ is for her, but we also don’t know the families circumstances…. The kids might’ve been small and unable to stand due to risk of being pushed over etc… kids might’ve been autistic so couldn’t have stood in a crowd…. The adults or kids might’ve had other hidden disabilities… blood pressure issues, or bad backs etc…. We can’t always assume people not giving up their seats for a woman (who didn’t even look pregnant!!) are being unreasonable..
This woman might’ve just been trying it on… I had a friend once who jumped the toilet queue saying ‘I’m pregnant’ when she was about 5 weeks pregnant and her bladder wouldn’t have even been affected yet!

Not everyone is in walking distance of everything!

Why should she have to walk because people have no bloody manners?

Firstly, it’s very unlikely that every single one of the people who wouldn’t give up their seat wasn’t able to do so.

And secondly, your bladder is affected in very early pregnancy due to the hormone changes. It’s not just baby dancing on your bladder near the end that increases urination.

I have concluded I'm mean because my reaction would have been similar to the OP

It is the bladder being squeezed by a full womb that affects the bladder, not hormones. Hormones don’t affect the size of your bladder……
BUT as I say this lady wasn’t even visibly pregnant so I doubt she was unable to stand …. But I think most on the train would’ve given up their seat to a visibly pregnant woman, I doubt many would move for a woman who was acting so rudely to stand and demand no one get near her…. I certainly wouldn’t give up my seat to let her sit next to my child or elderly nan…. She sounds like someone with other issues demanding a seat and pretending to be pregnant … BUT who knows.

Somethingneedstochange78 · 18/02/2023 18:53

And as I said In my comment it wouldn't be a huge sacrifice for someone to put they're child on they're knee. I had to once with a 9 year old once on a packed bus from the lakes. That wasn't allowed to accept anyone standing because the destination is over an hour away. But I was used to having him sat on my knee to calm him because of his autism. It's kind of uncomfortable for over an hour though.

I don’t think you’re mean…. I think this woman was more likely drunk or mentally unwell and demanding a seat, when that didn’t work she tried the ‘I’m pregnant’ line…. I feel sad for her but not for the same reason as others who chose to believe she needed a seat before even showing a bump

Again, incorrect.

“Increased urinary frequency is an early symptom of pregnancy in women. It's caused by an increase of the hormones progesterone and human chorionic gonadotropin. The urges tend to reduce in the second trimester.”

What message are children getting if they are sitting down whilst a pregnant woman is standing. I am older but would have offered her my seat without question.

That's a bit of a stretch! Do hope you're not an obstetrician! 🤐🙄

Ifeelsuchafool · 18/02/2023 19:04

I hate the modern trend for adults to be expected to stand on transport while children are given seats. No wonder the younger generation are growing up with such a sense of entitlement.
If I'd been on there with a seated child, I'd have told them to get up, pronto. Scrap that, with standing adults, any child I was with wouldn't be seated in the first place.

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 18/02/2023 19:04

I'm shocked no one offered her a seat. I don't blame her for flipping out.

Do you take this same approach if someone isn’t visibly disabled? Do you assume they are also just drunk or mentally unwell?

So you'd sit and make your 5 yo hang on to the rails because your safety matters more?

Well it sounds more to me like she was demanding a seat and inventing a pregnancy than anything else… but like I said we weren’t there so who knows….
would I give up my seat for a pregnant lady… yes !! Would I give it up for some rude lady screaming and demanding a seat….. probably…. But I don’t feel others are rude for not giving up a seat to someone who was actually being quite rude and possibly wasn’t even pregnant

That’s a stretch…. Being pregnant (early stages) doesn’t affect your ability to stand or have people close to you though does it?!…. Hidden disabilities are very different and as I stated the people you claim were rude might’ve had hidden disabilities themselves and were unable to give up their seats….. we can’t judge those who wouldn’t or couldn’t give up their seats as they themselves might’ve needed their seat….. the OP clearly stated most of the seated passengers were either elderly or with very young families….. I wouldn’t stand with a young child and risk them being squashed / pushed over …
mand actually why didn’t she just approach someone and ask politely ‘I’m pregnant please could I take your seat?’

What do you do when someone not yet visibly pregnant asks for a seat? Vaginal examination or will a MatB1 form do?

SemperIdem · 18/02/2023 19:19

I wouldn’t give up my seat for someone behaving so rudely.

I would because I wouldn’t want the baby to be injured or affected if the bus screeched to a halt and she fell flat on her face. She sounds like a bit of a lunatic though.
