Manager said no to holiday request

I'm probably going to get my arse handed to me on a plate here but fck it.
I asked for two days off on Monday just passed
I asked 10 days in advance.
Just been told today that it's been refused.
I asked why, was told 'I don't know'

I am very hot headed and I have such strong temptation to walk put right now. (I have another thread about my contract if anybody cares)
I've been spoken to like shit by this manager, talked down to on a daily basis, I've been micromanaged.
I dread coming to work, I cry most days. Management allowed another employee to verbally abuse me and no consequences were ever brought to the other person.

Would I be totally unreasonable to walk out? The thought of never having to work in this place again gives me great relief. Or am I just being stupid and should suck it up

Surely they HAVE to give a reason? They can't just say no if you have annual leave left and you're not in a role with extra pressure around end of financial year or whatever it might be?

Justcallmebebes · 15/02/2023 16:17

Do you need the money and/or a reference? By the money, I mean do you have a partner that can carry you financially in between jobs or is it all on you?

It's on me but I'm due pay next week anyway (fortnightly) and I have an interview on Friday

Apparently not
I have accrued the holidays but they've said no

Can you conveniently be sick on the days you wanted?

Dacadactyl · 15/02/2023 16:20

Is this a job with a rota? In my role they ask for 4 weeks notice of leave and can refuse us if we are late with our request. However, the manager bends over backwards for us and has been known to let us take leave on the day we want it, as long as we are not short of staff.

I wouldn't walk out without a job to go to. Take 10 minutes to calm down. Then go to the person who refused your request and calmly ask why they said no. They may have a valid reason.

Nsky62 · 15/02/2023 16:21

Didn’t give much notice did you?
A month is required for lots of jobs

MadeOfSteel · 15/02/2023 16:21

If you don't need the money or a reference, just leave. They're hardly likely to sue you for breach of contract; it's not worth it for them. Your emotional wellbeing is more important.

Theunamedcat · 15/02/2023 16:22

Calm down get a new job they will have to pay you outstanding holiday anyway

Slimjimtobe · 15/02/2023 16:23

10 days isn’t a lot of notice. I would try and get a new job before I quit

My contract says as much notice as possible
Unfortunately one of the holiday days I need is for a hospital thing, nothing that will impact my job but I really can't afford to reschedule it and I only got a letter about on Friday, hence I told the manager when I came in to work on Friday

10 days isn’t much notice but it sounds like your so unhappy there is it really worth staying at all?

That's helpful. That's the case in some jobs. Double the amount of time you're requesting as holiday is the norm in other jobs.

Definitely not, I wasn't paid any of my outstanding holiday from last year
I've worked here 6 months and I've only had two days holiday

Sorry Monday passed as in Monday this week? Did you take the leave or Monday coming? Do they have minimum staffing/ notice levels. My understanding is they can refuse leave.

No rota, I've done the same days since I started

Yeah Monday just two days ago
It's for two days off next week.
There are two of us that do this job but it can be done by 1 person so that isn't the reason, and if it was then why not say that

do you have to use holidays for hospital appointments? Surely they can’t refuse time off for medical needs?

if they’re being dicks about it just get a sick note for stress and see HR about this bullying

Whatsshecalled · 15/02/2023 16:29

One of the days is for a hospital appt?! Did you tell them this? And they still refused giving no reason? That sounds a lot like someone just saying 'no' because they can and they enjoy it....... however, it is always easier to get a new job when you already have a job so if you possibly can stick it out, do and calmly ask your manger for a reason why you can't attend a hospital appointment (in my work this wouldnt even be taken as holiday, it would be a medical appointment and almost impossible to refuse)

2 days holiday in 6 months? Pretty sure they’re in breach of done employment laws here

That's another issue, I'm not allowed any more time off sick
I had 5 days off over Christmas and I'm being investigated as to why, because "conveniently my time off fell during the Christmas period where I had another 2 days off" yep that's what my manager said to me

Nsky62 · 15/02/2023 16:33

Maybe it’s an American company, trying to apply their rules to English law, illegal I think.
Depending on what health needs you have ( or outs of sickness will depend how they see it).
i can’t really say, as no I work and have Parkinson’s

Manager is a bully. They have to allow annual leave, we get told we have to make sure we use it.

Do they have any HR policies you can refer to?

mamnotmum · 15/02/2023 16:33

I sometimes ask for holidays 10 months in advance and they are declined.

There will be a reason they are declining it. Maybe staffing issues?

I don't pulsar dare walk out because then I'd have no income to pay my bills. But maybe your situation is different?!
