For not cooking my teenager dinner

So I am really trying to use everything we have in the house before shopping for more.
today i made homemade tomato soup and garlic bread. My teen complained its not filling enough so they dont want that.
Cue her complaining for the next hour that she is starved, i gave her a list of things she could eat, tuna pasta, tuna mayo jacket potato, omelette, pesto pasta, even cereal.

She has now gone off in a strop because i wont go to the shop to buy her something saucy (?!) she hasnt eaten because nothing sounds nice. And now she’s gotten her dad involved saying i am starving her. Ahhhh

I'm mostly shocked about how much people eat these days.
You gluttons do realise, that home made soup is more than a soup-in-a-cup portion?!? Plus, like what.... 500 - 600 kcal in a buttered garlic bread?

Since when a bowl of soup and a chunk of bread plus snacks is not a meal? Since the "obesity" times clearly...

I was at my fattest in mid-teens. There's nothing great about being a teenage food hoover.

I think you would have to eat a lot of garlic bread or put a lot of butter on it for it to be 500 to 600 calories. The soup would be low in calories as well unless a lot of cream was added to it. Perhaps that's the difference between those who consider it a good size meal and those who don't. I wouldn't add a lot of butter or cream so the whole meal sounds like 400 or 500 calorie to me. That's not enough for an evening meal. Perhaps those who think it is eat a lot of snacks during the day or a big lunch but I don't think school children generally do get a lot of food during the day.

GrapesOfRoss · 12/02/2023 13:23

6 inch baguette is over 400 cals alone.

800 calories in a Sainsburys garlic bread, and for comparison around 300 calories in a standard tin of Heinz cream of tomato soup. So if you ate the whole lot in one sitting it would be over 1000 calories, which is half the recommended daily intake for an adult. I think the poster has a point about obesity. I lost a lot of weight over a 12 month period and sticking to 1000 calories a day - even maximising what I could eat for those calories - made me realise how easy it is to overeat in terms of taking in more energy than you use.

Well do that then, duh! If it doesn't fill you up eat a bigger portion, no? Though with the rate of obesity in this country people probably need to eat smaller portions.

ItchyBillco · 12/02/2023 18:55

Cannot believe this thread is still going and certain posters are still so upset that a chunky soup and cheesy garlic bread is ‘not an evening meal’. 😆

Who would eat a whole one? Surely a third would be a normal portion. Any more than that would be quite sickly with all the garlic and butter. Also, having half your recommended daily intake would only make you obese if it wasn't half your daily intake. I probably do eat as much in the evening as I do in the rest of the day. I imagine a lot of people do.

hryllilegur · 12/02/2023 19:13

A hungry person would eat a whole one. Wouldn’t they?

Someone who’d, for example, decided they want to consume more calories than soup and 1/3 of a garlic bread.

They might opt to eat more soup, more bread or both.

I think many people would consume half or more of a standard supermarket sized garlic bread anyway.

DotAndCarryOne2 · 12/02/2023 19:38

Can’t make sense of this no matter how I try - obviously missing something. My point was that this would be half the recommended daily calories in one meal.

How would having half your recommended daily intake in one sort it make you obese though?

Sitting, not sort.

I wouldn't eat a whole baguette of garlic bread even if hungry. It's not exactly health food.

@hryllilegur

they shouldn’t eat a full one, too many calories
if you look on the packet it usually tells you the recommended serving

I was responding to the complaint that it’s not filling or calorific enough.

If you are hungry and need to eat more food: you should eat more food.

if you think more garlic bread just isn’t healthy enough: eat more soup.

MN is bonkers about food.

That’s not enough food. You need more calories.

Well eat more of it then.

Oh but the packet says no. That’s too many calories. And garlic bread is not healthy.

😫😫😫😫

I wouldn't eat a whole baguette of garlic bread because of the saturated fat and hefty amount of garlic. Nothing to with calories. Tomato soup is fine but personally I would be hungry again a couple of hours after eating it, so not a good evening meal for me as I don't want to go to bed hungry or wake up starving. Obviously what other people do is up to them but I'm just countering the point that some posters seem to be making that those don't think soup and garlic bread is enough for the evening meal are obese or that you can just eat more of it. I can also see why a teenager wouldn't see it as a sufficient evening meal.

But as has been stated many, many, many times, that was not the only thing on offer.

Yes, she should have eaten it and then had something else so that she wasn't hungry. I haven't said otherwise. I was just countering the point that some others have made that tomato soup and garlic bread is a substantial evening meal by itself and that anyone who doesn't think it adequate by itself as an evening meal is obese etc.

I suppose it depends how far the shop is and how much money you have.

If the shop is round the corner and you have money to buy her something of her choosing, then I suppose YABU (I would have fridged the soup and eaten it myself tomorrow).

However, if the shop is far enough to be a nuisance and you are short, then YANBU.

She said she's trying to use up the other food in the house before she goes shopping again. It sounds like there's quite a bit of food for the teen to choose from if she doesn't want soup.

Expecting her mom to go to the store because she's too picky to eat what's in the house is very unreasonable, especially when there's clearly plenty of food for her to eat.

Why should her mom go get her special food to eat when they have food in the house already?

knelson · 26/02/2023 06:51

CaspianPlover · 08/02/2023 22:21

It depends on how old the teen is, a baked potato takes a good hour to cook, not many teens are good at whipping up a meal on demand. Cereal is not an evening meal. Why didn't the Poster cook one of the options she listed to feed her child.

You can put the potato in the microwave for a few minutes, put some butter, and whatever else you want on it. Not that complicated. I could easily make that as a teenager.

My sister and I were able to cook dinner for our family if 5 when I was a teen.

I'm guessing she wouldn't have offered those options if her daughter wasn't capable of cooking them.

LauraTMarantette · 26/03/2023 23:09

That girl is obviously spoiled. At my house you eat what is served. I think tomato soup with lentils and homemade bread is a great meal. I think the options given were great. Teenage girl need to learn we don’t always get our own way in this life. My parents raised 9 children and I don’t remember us ever having pizza from Pizza Hut or some other pizza delivery place. My mom always cooked for us. Sure there were meals I didn’t like but I was glad to have something to eat. She always made our bread, cookies, cakes and pies. And before you say it is cheaper to buy them, my sister is Paula Ames the amazing cake lady. Her cakes cost upwards to a thousand dollars. So really you get what you pay for. I always cooked for my family. Families eat what is served!

Rosesandstars · 26/03/2023 23:23

YANBU unless she has always hated eggs, garlic and tuna!
