For not cooking my teenager dinner

So I am really trying to use everything we have in the house before shopping for more.
today i made homemade tomato soup and garlic bread. My teen complained its not filling enough so they dont want that.
Cue her complaining for the next hour that she is starved, i gave her a list of things she could eat, tuna pasta, tuna mayo jacket potato, omelette, pesto pasta, even cereal.

She has now gone off in a strop because i wont go to the shop to buy her something saucy (?!) she hasnt eaten because nothing sounds nice. And now she’s gotten her dad involved saying i am starving her. Ahhhh

With the ‘cold pasta isn’t enough for an evening meal’ what happens if you microwave that pasta? Is it then enough?

Come on now. Everyone knows that hot pasta is far more substantial than cold pasta 🤣

@Sizzlebot I think it's you that's obsessed. With the British class system! Maybe I'm French, Italian or Moroccan... and need something more substantial than a bowl of soup when I'm hungry and knackered. Does that still make me British lower middle class? Even if I come from a different continent entirely?

This post isn't about you, though.

StanFransDisco · 10/02/2023 21:53

@Sizzlebot I know that. It was you that tagged me and accused me of being small minded and having a chip on my shoulder, so I was responding to that.
Enough said. Shame we can't disagree about something as simple as food without you throwing insults around but there you go. It's Friday night on MN so I guess you have nothing better to do.

I'm just trying to imagine my old school Jamaican mum's face if I told her she was gaslighting me with the dinner she'd cooked. 😂

Agreed. See also my Glaswegian mum's face 😱

Likewise, my dear 😘.

@Sizzlebot good night sweetums 😘😘

I really did not throw a tantrum Confused

I live 1 min from a convenience shop. I wouldn't find it any problem to get random bits for members of my family. I could be back in 5 minutes with something that someone wanted. I actually went this evening for one item for my dh who was tired and had a rough day.

It was a bit off for you to tell the OP to ignore my post. I didn't have a tantrum, I just pointed out that the OP is free to ignore whatever she chooses but that I don't really think that when she's asked for opinions that you should just tell her to ignore mine.

I don't agree with you on this issue. It doesn't mean I've had a tantrum.

This comes across as though you run around after everyone and say its ok because they're teens, work hard, breather etc. If its 1 min for you, it's 1 min for dh and dc...

Op gave a lot of other options, teen ignored them and basically wanted op to do what you do and go and get something. Teen can cook for herself or go to the shop and buy something.
My ds cooks for himself if he has too because I've had a long day and he's been home gaming. He will also when really hungry after eating 3 burgers, make a bowl of cereal or 2...

luck i made cheesy garlic bread! It was delicious probably all the cream in the soup. It definitely was not miserable.

Your soup and cheesy garlic bread sounds absolutely delicious, @Ohdesr - please can I come for dinner?

Share your favourite dinner recipe and we'll part as friends 😋

As a teen pre period week I’d have been disappointed with soup for dinner. We occasionally have soup for dinner but have a dessert too. It’s usually because we’re short on time between work and clubs. Not really very substantial but pasta alternative should be fine. Teen was being unreasonable as offered compromise.

StanFransDisco · 10/02/2023 22:12

@Sizzlebot maybe next time. I'm too knackered 💤

JosieHetty · 10/02/2023 22:15

Soup and bread clearly not enough. My slim and energetic teens would also still be hungry and would have that as a starter

Lou202211 · 10/02/2023 22:19

YABU- for a soup to be a dinner for a teenager- however you offered alternative meals so YNBU

Kanaloa · 10/02/2023 22:20

JockTamsonsBairns · 10/02/2023 21:45

I genuinely wanted to know 😂 we have pasta for tea all the time, but is it ok since we eat it hot? Why is cold pasta not enough? And why is fish and chips (fish with potato) an acceptable dinner but baked potato with tuna (fish with potato) not an acceptable dinner? It just makes no sense!

LoisLane66 · 10/02/2023 22:22

Once you start down the path of giving in to her strops, there is no going back.
She has choices. That's it.

LoisLane66 · 10/02/2023 22:25

She could have had the soup and garlic bread first and put a potato in the microwave to eat after the soup. Maybe even topped with cheese or butter.

Hope you have a restful weekend with lots of nice food 😊.

Cintha · 10/02/2023 22:54

Many of you criticising the substance and sufficiency of a soup lunch are neglecting to take on board that this was a homemade chunky, filling and nutritious soup accompanied by homemade cheesey garlic bread! Delicious and substantial - and YANBU! 🙂

Kjpt140v · 10/02/2023 23:06

Are you kidding? The child is absolutely ungrateful and is being manipulative.

Mandyjack · 10/02/2023 23:11

Tell her to go to the shop herself and use her pocket money to buy something saucy if she wants it that much

Mrsgreen100 · 10/02/2023 23:13

Ffs of course a hearty tomato and lentil soup is enough, just eat more of it and more bread
I am at a loss as to why anyone would think it wasn’t enough for dinner ,
no wonder we have such a huge obesity problem in the population .
well done for cooking from scratch super mum I’d say
teen tantrum!

T1Dmama · 11/02/2023 00:31

NOPE… I wouldn’t go out to buy something else either, you have plenty of options.
Some people on here are nuts!… why would you buy more food before everything in the house is used up…. Can imagine how much food some of the commenters throw away each week because they ‘just pop’ and buy more for their little darlings!
This is what’s wrong with todays kids… parents never say no!!
well done OP… maybe next time she’s ‘starving’ she’ll eat what’s on offer without the toddler tantrum

GillianCarole · 11/02/2023 02:15

Are you the unpaid help? She can cook her own food, or get her dad to cook it for her!

Dogcafedreamer · 11/02/2023 07:04

StanFransDisco · 10/02/2023 21:35

@Dogcafedreamer in your opinion it is. It's not in mine 🤷‍♀️HTH

Luckily a lot disagree with you!

Poppyblush · 11/02/2023 07:44

Soup and garlic bread is not enough for a teenager, so YABU.

Her reaction to additional food, YANBU. But she was probably hangry.
