Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

YANBU but unfortunately businesses are happy to pander to mingers who love nothing better than wallowing in dog fur, dog slobber, piss and shit.'

Hilarious. That's EXACTLY what happens too - which is why the cafe owners are so happy to allow animals in...

vivainsomnia · 08/02/2023 11:58

have you never heard of Toxocariasis?
This is getting hilarious! Wipes good enough for covid, kids faeces, cough ect....but a dog...oh no....but don't get me wrong, it's not targeting at dogs at all, I really really like them 😂

And they all keep coming back after all getting nasty diseases passed in by those disgusting creatures!

I think we are back to scare on, don't go there!!

@vivainsomnia

it is targeting dogs cos dogs carry risk of Toxocariasis, not people. Simple as that.

and I do like dogs. But I treat them like dogs, not humans. So that means they sit on the floor and not on chairs.

vivainsomnia · 08/02/2023 12:07

soooooooo entitled
Yes indeed, m dog is entitled to seat on my lap, which is where they go when I travel, so yeah, I guess we are entitled just as you are entitled to seat in your allocated seat. You are not entitled to demand my dog stay on the ground. I'm not entitled to tell you to go and find another seat!

If I'd have a problem with you, whatever it is, I'd ask the conductor to move me. You'd be free to do the same. It is indeed quite simple.

vivainsomnia · 08/02/2023 12:11

Toxocariasis is rare in the UK. Oh and can't be passed from fresh faeces, it takes weeks before it can infect. And it's treatable.

Now let's count the number of people travelling with Covid who put their hands on everything and passed it on at times when it was putting large numbers of people in hospitals.

But yeah, let's keep on targeting the group least likely to cause ill health!

Plus

all these dog owners saying their dogs don’t lick their own genitals or their dogs don’t smell or whatever

NEWSFLASH!!

They do. All dogs do.

My staffy couldn't lick his own genitals. A lot of bull breeds can't reach round that far. FYI

@Springbreakwoohoo

when I go out I wear nice clothes and do not want to be sat somewhere that a dog has just been sat

is that really so hard for you to understand

I wear nice clothes.

Good for you. I'll continue to do as I do too. Thankfully, in real life I have never once met anyone as petty as in here. All I get is how cute and adorable my dog is, how incredibly well behaved they are and can they pet them! Much nicer than MNs public place 😄

what about, what about, what about covid etc

compare it to what you like

but most people do not want a dog to be sat on the table of a train

WFHbore2023 · 08/02/2023 12:17

Jesus.

Some people are really making it hard for other dog owners on this thread.

Some people in real life may well think differently they just can’t be arsed to confront you about it

MooseBreath · 08/02/2023 12:20

I am very pro dogs and love that they are accepted in some cafes.

That said, I do not bring my dog to cafes. He is excellent with children, doesn't jump at people, and doesn't bark, but he won't sit still and would be massively annoying to try and keep under a table. I do wish other dog owners would only bring their dogs if they were suited to the environment.

LexMitior · 08/02/2023 12:22

Well, self awareness can be difficult. British people are not publicly confrontational. They are polite.

So I wouldn't take no comment as active endorsement. People just don't go, or avoid a particular place.

Anyway, it's the owner, not the dog. The dog can't help it

Elphame · 08/02/2023 12:23

Walterwhiteswifey · 07/02/2023 13:03

What do dog lovers think about dogs barking in restaurants and cafes? Recently I was out having lunch and a couple and their dog sat at the table next to us. The dog barked endlessly, really loud right in my ear. The owner couldn't stop it so they just carried on eating while everyone around them stared and got agitated. It was so loud we had to get up and move tables.
Surely this is not on? Why should everyone's nice time be interrupted by a howling dog so loud people couldn't have a conversation.

As a dog owner and dog lover I hate it as much as I hate listening to toddlers screaming who won't stop which ruin my nice time.

There is no excuse for allowing your dogs to bark continuously in a pub or cafe and if mine did (they don't!) I would take them out.

There were 2 schnauzers in a pub we went to over Xmas that barked the whole time we were there trying to get at my dog (we were there first) the girl working behind the bar had to ask them to sit elsewhere. Which I think was outside!! I wouldn't take my dog to places if he didn't behave either. It's not enjoyable for anyone!

@Dogcafedreamer
@vivainsomnia

i do wipe the table first yes

but if a dogs arse had been there I would want to bleach the table never mind give it a wipe!

have you never heard of Toxocariasis?

Have you heard of flu, covid, rubella, all types of viruses etc?

I think humans may just pass on more germs than dogs, don't you?

Perhaps you could purchase these, because realistically you don't know who or what had been on the train table?

*pass on more illnesses

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2023 12:30

LuckySantangelo35 · 08/02/2023 11:56

That’s sounds a good idea. All the dog hair and smelly dog breath etc can be contained in one carriage for dog owners

It's the perfect solution. Everyone can enjoy the train trip then.

@Dogcafedreamer

already got some mate

and guess what I still don’t want your dog on a train table

and you can compare with humans diseases all you want

I still don’t want dogs on chairs and tables and lots of other people don’t either

they don’t need to be there

Yep I agree

mamnotmum · 08/02/2023 12:36

Being a dog owner I'm happy that places now allow dogs.

Like you say though - some people do not train their dogs or have different thoughts on what is acceptable behaviour. And this is where the problem lies.

A dog friendly section might be an idea for some of these places. A lot of pubs only allow them in the bar so maybe check before you go in?

Could you consider antihistamines when you are going to these places to make them more bearable? Alternatively I can only really advise avoiding them completely.

ThisIsBrandNewInformation · 08/02/2023 12:37

So when furbaby-lovers are challenged about their smelly dogs’ bums and drool on furniture, the best they can come up with is, but but but toddlers sometimes have leaky nappies and some adults don’t wash their hands. Amusing that that’s all they have.

Anyway maybe I am lucky but I have never been on a train with someone keeping their mutt on a table; I have not seen anyone that uncivilised yet. Things could change, as anything goes with entitled dog-owners!

I would never have allowed my kids to put their feet on seats or stand on a table. Or wee on the floor. Or leak on a seat. Higher standards I guess. Which is what the whole thread is about really.

@icelolly12

that’s bollocks

most people don’t walk around with their hands all over the floor do they

come on now, unless you know some right grubby people that’s just wrong isn’t it
