Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

Why is it wrong? The man may have no other company other than his dog so why shouldn't he bring it into a bar. That scenario wouldn't bother me as I don't go round licking bars and I use hand sanitiser and wash my hands. I'm assuming it was more a country pub than a fancy cocktail bar?

@Dogcafedreamer

already got some mate

and guess what I still don’t want your dog on a train table

and you can compare with humans diseases all you want

I still don’t want dogs on chairs and tables and lots of other people don’t either

they don’t need to be there

"SIGH" Mate, I never said my dog got on a table, you've fabricated that, because you're over invested in the thread, want everyone who points out your misplaced concerns to stop, don't like it when people point out the bloody obvious like humans pass on more illnesses etc.

Mate, take a walk, get some fresh air and calm down. Walking a dog is good for all those things.

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2023 12:45

So we now have dog's paws are cleaner than a human's hands. Grin

@Dogcafedreamer

thank you for the advice but I’m just fine

I stand by my opinion

there is nothing you or anyone else has said that has altered it

Well it's non comparable really isn't it. It depends on both the dog and the human and where they have been!

@icelolly12

he can go into the pub on his own 🤷‍♀️
or have the dog sat by his feet like most people would in a dog friendly pub

What has the one thing got to do with the other?

icelolly12 · 08/02/2023 12:50

If their dog is their companion and helps them socialise then I'd rather they brought their dog into a public space than remain at home alone.

Its non comparable because humans don't walk on their hands, or dig holes in dirt with them etc.

icelolly12 · 08/02/2023 12:53

The dogs paws and human hands thing was just a light hearted comment referencing people who don't wash their hands after the loo

Blossomtoes · 08/02/2023 12:53

LuckySantangelo35 · 08/02/2023 12:42

@icelolly12

that’s bollocks

most people don’t walk around with their hands all over the floor do they

come on now, unless you know some right grubby people that’s just wrong isn’t it

You’ve obviously never seen that study in which a bowl of peanuts on a bar was analysed and found to contain traces of over 20 different strains of human urine. I’m constantly staggered by the number of people who don’t wash their hands after visiting the loo. I’m anecdotally informed that hand washing is quite rare in male toilets.

No they don't walk around with their hands on the floor, they scratch their arses, pick their noses, wipe their arses and masturbate and then don't wash their hands all day long.....................

They can be put in an on more disgusting places than that ground though. Like I say, it depends on the dog and the human...

I think you need to realise that it makes you come across as extremely condescending, you may want to rethink how you use it. I mean it is not being said in a "friendly" manner, is it?

supersaluki · 08/02/2023 13:02

I have 5 dogs and only take them to dog friendly places

Honestly if you dont like phone places and ask if they are dog friendly
Then go there

I have choices to have m6 dogs with me
2 of whom are my attendance dogs I would not be able to out without them

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2023 13:06

It's hilarious, people tying themselves in knots comparing dog's paws and human hands and trying to argue that a dog is more hygienic. But if that's what you want to believe to justify it I suppose...

Not saying more hygienic, just saying you need to think about hygiene all the time, not just if a dogs been around.

Which is I think obvious?

Nobody’s said that, human beings can be disgusting so the hygiene argument doesn’t stick.

humans can be gross

yes, no one is denying that

it doesn’t mean that dog owners should have free reign on letting their dogs be unhygienic in public spaces does it? Like sitting on chairs or tables

two wrongs don’t make a right

There is only 1 person saying they would allow that though?

I've said multiple times the only time my dog has been on furniture in a pub is when the actual landlord has invited him up.

Everyone else agrees that dogs should only be in places if they behave and don't take the piss.

totally agree with you

vivainsomnia · 08/02/2023 13:30

I still don’t want dogs on chairs and tables and lots of other people don’t either
I, I, I. The world doesn't revolve around what you want. All the reasons given have been challenged with facts. You can say that you don't like X, Y and Z, but that doesn't translate to your wants taking precedence over what is allowed.

I would never have allowed my kids to put their feet on seats or stand on a table. Or wee on the floor. Or leak on a seat. Higher standards I guess. Which is what the whole thread is about really
Neither did I but that doesn't mean it others don't. I would never impose my dog on someone with a phobia or who asked politely to do something different. If they don't want to ask, or respond contrary to how they feel, that's their issue.

What I hate is unjustified generalisations. All dogs this, all dogs that and them decide they are entitled to make rules for all just because it fits with their own personal principles. Imposing their views confusing what is right or wrong with what they believe is right or wrong. That's entitlement.

We all have to follow the rules and be respectful. I follow the rules and try to be respectful, but what I won't do is systematically do what one other person demands just because they strongly believe it's their right as defined by their own book.
