Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

Our dog’s bed doesn’t stink. It’s washed far too often for that to even be a possibility. I realise you don’t like dogs but it’s not necessary to be quite so offensive.

People always think their animal doesn’t smell.

jezlifecoach · 07/02/2023 23:48

Dogs are vile and literally eat babies.
They shouldn’t be allowed anywhere that serves food.
dog owners are selfish.
end of :)

Indeed. And some of them are right.

Sure ;-)

I think there probably is something of a hidden division. Now I think about it, I have no friends with dogs (once a boyfriend who had one) so the issue never occurs.

But then I live in London and it's just less common to keep in smaller properties.

Growing up in the country and yes lots of dogs. But people used to tie them up outside the pub or shop, or sit outside with them. Seemed to suit everyone

ThisIsBrandNewInformation · 07/02/2023 23:54

There are lots of threads about people being less considerate, entitled etc these days. I wonder if people bringing their ‘fur babies’ everywhere is just another symptom of this.

PitYerTapOan · 07/02/2023 23:56

Yeah it's annoying.

The owners are annoying too. "Oh but Fifo loves going into cafes" they say. Oh really? And just exactly when did he share this in conversation with you, you massive fucking tin of spam?

Ariela · 08/02/2023 00:03

I'm a dog owner and would never take a dog into a café or other eating place. I know how madly annoying dog hair floating about is when you're cooking, when food is about etc....

This is just silly. Of course they smell, they're animals

You can always smell a dog as soon as you walk into the house

Do you genuinely think that dog owners can't tell if their dog enjoys something or not?

You can’t. You can smell some dogs if they’re not clean and their bed isn’t washed regularly. My dog hating and very outspoken friend very grudgingly had to admit that she wouldn’t know we’d got a dog unless she’d actually seen her.

You would be the only person then. I'd actually love a dog, but I don't want my house to smell.

Blossomtoes · 08/02/2023 00:18

It doesn’t have to. Mine definitely doesn’t.

They seem to think their dogs are soft as shit and just playing when they are chewing toddlers' faces off so no, I'm not convinced they're entirely in tune with much.

CohenTree · 08/02/2023 00:47

Blossomtoes · 07/02/2023 23:50

Indeed. And some of them are right.

Our big hairy slobbery boy only smells if he's had a bath. Then he smells like disgusting fake perfume.

Willyoujustbequiet · 08/02/2023 01:06

I agree OP and I'm a dog owner/lover.

Beer gardens are fine but not inside restaurants etc. Its very selfish to those with allergies and quite frankly some are unhygienic.

Carlycat · 08/02/2023 01:52

Tbh I prefer dogs to people Grin

PitYerTapOan · 08/02/2023 01:54

If you are a real cat then you are dicing with death.

That's just not true at all. My dog smells now, but he's old. I don't give a shit if my house smells. But some dogs don't make the house smell.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 08/02/2023 05:25

ThisIsBrandNewInformation · 07/02/2023 23:19

Fortunately none of our good friends own dogs. I would not go to theirs if they did. When I viewed houses to buy, I turned down any with a dog basket as I knew the houses would not be clean.

Have you actually heard yourself? 🤣

Dogcafedreamer · 08/02/2023 07:07

@ThisIsBrandNewInformation you'd not buy a house that had a dog basket because it wasn't clean? You do realise what sort of other unclean things go on in houses? You do realise you can clean the house once you've bought it?

Honestly I've read some truly mad things on MN but not buying a house because they had a dog is one of the craziest yet.

People leave houses in disgusting states, with or without a dog.

LexMitior · 08/02/2023 07:11

Ah now that definitely can be a thing. Saw a great house, smelled strongly of dogs (estate agent confirmed) and I did not buy it. The house by that point was free of carpet and soft furnishings, so decided it was a no.
