Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

@LuckySantangelo35 they do leave hot disposable bbqs though!

Dogcafedreamer · 07/02/2023 20:29

@LuckySantangelo35 so would you rather your child to step in dog shit or on a hot BBQ, or the pebbles it was used on... what hurts most?

Yes I'm aware that it's possible to get toxoplasmosis, but it's a possibility rather than the definite of a burnt foot.

@AllThingsServeTheBeam

i never said humans don’t shit on the beach

but 9/10 it will be dog shit rather than human shit should you see shit on a beach

But I don't see much dog shit on any beaches. I see lots of human rubbish. Left by humans

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/02/2023 20:32

@Dogcafedreamer

hmmm well the bbqs are only a few months of the year, summertime.

…so on balance I would say people rather left the bbqs than dog shit

I live near a beach and I can count on one hand how many times I’ve seen abandoned bbq”s, dog shit however - I’ve seen loads of times.

Stupid people can’t be arsed picking it up. There really is no excuse for it. Can’t stand such selfish people

I also live a five minute walk from the beach, can't remember when I saw dog shit on the beach. So 🤔!

Anyway, I love walking my dog on the beach, it's one of the reasons why I got another dog.

We walk the beach, end up in the cafe or the bar on the beach.

Lots of other dogs to have fun with and lots of other dog owners to chat with.

Dogcafedreamer · 07/02/2023 20:44

@AllThingsServeTheBeam neither do I! Not sure where all this dog shit is!

Hawkins002 · 07/02/2023 20:44

Dogcafedreamer · 07/02/2023 20:48

@LuckySantangelo35 well the problem is the are you live in, where is it, that the people have such low standards?

Where do you think dogs should be allowed?

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/02/2023 20:48

@AllThingsServeTheBeam

nope

that is true

but the selfish ones spoil it for everyone else

Same, I spend every day at the beach and not once have I come a cropper with dog shit. But broken glass, dirty nappies, snotty tissues, yes. Human waste is so disgusting

Selfish humans spoil everything for everyone. Doesn't matter if they own a dog or not

YANBU. I actually don’t mind dogs but my DH is severely allergic to them. I’m also totally fed up of dogs yapping or barking at each other when I am trying to enjoy my meal.

Taking my dogs to the pub stresses me out. We did it once and they weren't badly behaved, but I was in edge because they no doubt found it very boring!

My dog loves a pub - especially if there are biscuits on offer Grin

It would be a cold day in hell before I re-routed a dog walk to pick up a pint of milk on my way home

Who said anything about re-routing a dog walk? There just happens to be one between the woodland park we walk in and my house. If it wasn't allowed I wouldn't do it but it's convenient so I do and my dog loves getting fusses off the staff, she's already had her run round the fields. Wilkos have obviously decided it's a good business decision for them which I suspect is the case for all the cafes and pubs and shops that allow them.

I'm not sure why you quoted my post about there being no need for dogs in shops, to tell me about how convenient it is for you, and then picked out the bit about what I choose to do from my response to that. I didn't say you re-routed your walks, I said that I would not - and, strangely, I said that because I would have to. I think you have issues with post comprehension.

I don't really care what you do with your dog - mostly because I don't shop at "Wilkos" so I'm unlikely to encounter you - but I do completely understand why other people think it's unacceptable to take dogs into shops, especially when they're wet and muddy from running about in fields.

CocoFifi · 07/02/2023 20:52

I live in the EU and dogs are allowed in restaurants and bars and also shops. I don't see a problem. They are usually better behaved than a lot of children

Dogcafedreamer · 07/02/2023 20:55

@coffeecupsandwaxmelts my dog loves the pub as well, never buys a bloody round though!

Does yours? If they do, how do you train that? 😂

whatadoodledo · 07/02/2023 21:28

I hate it mainly because often I feel the dog owners allow their dogs to come up and sniff at you assuming you're ok with it. I'm not ok with it!

He doesn't 🙄 he even manages to get treats for free but never offers to pay his share.

Bit rude if you ask me 🤣

This is a countryside issue? I never see this in an urban environment. People do not take their dogs to the pub, cafe or restaurant in cities. Perhaps it's the perception that there's not much space. Dogs seem to be allowed outside pubs where there is a garden but not allowed where kids are (good reasons).

You might see a guide dog. That's it.

Sadly loads of cafes in zone 2/3 London allow dogs. Caffè Nero is one of the worst here.

Also, the hygiene argument -

Do none of you have friends that have dogs? Do you not visit them? Have a cuppa? Or dinner or anything?

Fortunately none of our good friends own dogs. I would not go to theirs if they did. When I viewed houses to buy, I turned down any with a dog basket as I knew the houses would not be clean.

Blossomtoes · 07/02/2023 23:33

That’s why people with dogs put the dog bed in the car before viewings. Estate agents are on to people like you and suggest removing all traces of pets.

Yes that makes sense. But people still don’t all know to do that and leave the stinking bed out in full view.

Blossomtoes · 07/02/2023 23:43

Our dog’s bed doesn’t stink. It’s washed far too often for that to even be a possibility. I realise you don’t like dogs but it’s not necessary to be quite so offensive.
