Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

You can generally tell if someone has a dog as soon as you step into the house, as it smells of dog.

I think most owners accept that TBH and don’t care too much.

The worst is wet dog smell. 🤢

LexMitior · 08/02/2023 07:29

Well dogs do have an odour. There's a funny thing where you tune out common smells in your home but visitors will experience it strongly (because they haven't tuned it).

Same for cigarettes, sweat etc.

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2023 07:45

Yes I assume you get used to the dog smell as an owner and can no longer smell it, but others can. Probably the same with all pets.

PitYerTapOan · 07/02/2023 23:56

Yeah it's annoying.

The owners are annoying too. "Oh but Fifo loves going into cafes" they say. Oh really? And just exactly when did he share this in conversation with you, you massive fucking tin of spam?

Unless you're terminally stupid, can tell when a dog is enjoying something by their body language Hmm

Dogcafedreamer · 08/02/2023 07:50

LexMitior · 08/02/2023 07:11

Ah now that definitely can be a thing. Saw a great house, smelled strongly of dogs (estate agent confirmed) and I did not buy it. The house by that point was free of carpet and soft furnishings, so decided it was a no.

If and when I sell, I will insist the agent takes photos of the dog bed in the house.

Can't be doing with time wasters.

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2023 08:00

Difficukt to tell if the dog is enjoying it's trip to the cafe when it's sitting under a table being silent as a lot of owners have claimed is what happens.

LeilaGetTheHose · 08/02/2023 08:02

Yep I don't like it either. Where does it stop with animals? Can people bring their budgies and cats too?

It's gross having them in an eating establishment. Their hair that moults everywhere, the drool and dirty paws, the peeing. It's a hard no from me. But like you said, everyone on here is cat or dog mad.

My dog wags his tail with his excitement when we pull up at his favourite pub or café. He'll even pull us to the door if we're walking past.

The staff know him and as soon as they approach with his treat he wriggles his bum and sits to greet them as he knows exactly what's coming.

While we're eating he does sit quietly under the table but that doesn't mean he's completely devoid of any personality while we're there!

My dog pulls us into every pub as we walk past. He enjoys his pork scratchings and getting fusses

Pinkypie86 · 08/02/2023 08:09

Dogs are far superior than humans and should be allowed everywhere. I'm allergic too.

I think there should be a Dogsnet - it feels like every second thread is about dogs.

Just don't go to places they allow dogs.

So clearly a 'not sitting under the table quietly' type dog. I guess it's all of that sort of thing the OP finds problematic, they don't all head for underneath the table straight away, or that they end up on the next table to those that do.

twinklystar23 · 08/02/2023 08:13

My friend moved an hour away ao we started meeting at a pub halfway. As it's more like a restaurant with people paying a decent price, the last time a guy was at a table close to us. His dog wandered over to us, he (eventually) said sorry and pulled the dog back. I like dogs and the more traditional pubs that pretty much serve drinks only i think is quite nice, and fine. If the dog is well behaved. However the majority of pubs now serve food, which is I think off putting if your paying a fair amount yo have someone's dog coming up to your whilst your eating.
As for kids, mine weren't allowed to wander around in any food outlet including mcDs my son was excited in there with all his friends as a pre schooler, refused to listen to me, I warned him if he did not sit down I would take him outside to finish his meal. He didn't, so I did. Never played up again. It's unacceptable and dangerous where food is being served.
I'll just have to enjoy the & saved by avoiding places with dogs and kids!

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2023 08:14

As PPs have said in some parts those places are few and far between. It's a shame because when the food and service is good at the places that allow dogs it's still a dealbreaker.

There are cat cafes, I'm not sure in they are just cafes that have cats in that you can fuss, or if you bring your own. I've not currently got a cat and they don't allow dogs in them. Budgies, I suppose ok if you bring them in a cage? Mind you I cannot remember the last pet budgie I saw? Seems quite cruel keeping them in small cages.

He does sit under the table quietly. Until someone asks if he can have a fuss. He only goes near people who want him near them. Otherwise his head remains on my foot. Like it does at home.

But what's the option? Go to the car and few between then.

We're going round in circles, you don't like going to cafes with dogs, then don't.

I don't like going to the cinema, I don't go.

I am a huge cat lover but really do not fancy a cat cafe, it just seems a bit wrong.

There is a resident cat at our local pub as well. Shows all the dogs whose boss

Dogs are vile and literally eat babies.
They shouldn’t be allowed anywhere that serves food.
dog owners are selfish.

Every thread about this (and there has been a lot) goes around in circles. I don't understand the comparison to the cinema though-unless they allow dogs now.

The places that don't allow dogs far outweigh the places that do.

It's a non argument isn't it? If you don't like something then don't put up with it.

You're just making things up now. PP never said their dog wasn't a "sitting quietly under a table type".

Dogs can be exited to go into pubs and still behave well once they're inside. Mine also wouldn't go straight to a table as he knows the treats are at the bar and that's where he has to go so we can order first Wink
