Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

I went to get my hair cut a couple of weeks ago. A rare opportunity to be pampered and get some much needed pace and quiet. Two women turned up with their dogs. Who brings their dog to a hair salon? They were licking the floor and kept getting in the way. I don't understand why they were there.

My hairdresser (now not in a salon sadly), used to bring both her dogs to work. Lovely they were, she was always fully booked, so clearly not an issue.

Dogcafedreamer · 07/02/2023 19:09

@Dogscanteatonions open your own cafe that doesn't allow dogs, you'll clearly (not) make a fortune!

Do you know what's tedious? Breaking out in hives and wheezing with asthma after coming into contact with dog hair.

I fully accept lots of places allow dogs now it's surely it's not unreasonable to be able to sit on a chair that hasn't had a dog in it

So go eat and/or drink in the many cafes and restaurants that don't allow dogs. Problem solved.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 07/02/2023 19:11

@Dogcafedreamer I wasn't the only one that raised an eyebrow about the dogs being in the salon. The lady cutting my hair for one wasn't impressed. I can understand dogs being in a cafe in a park but not in a salon.

So don't go there? It's really that simple!

Who goes to the hairdressers for peace and quiet? I can barely hear myself think over the constant hairdryers.

If the staff weren't happy, why were they not told to leave?

It's not somewhere I'd take my dog, but surely it's the staff that have to say 'no, no dogs allowed'

MadameDe · 07/02/2023 19:14

I love my dog with all my heart and if I could would spend every waking hour with him. However, if I go out for lunch, dinner or any other indoor space (bar the pet shop) he stays at home. I don't understand the need for people to take the dog everywhere with them.

AlwaysGinPlease · 07/02/2023 19:20

Another boring dog hater.

I think a lot of people have coffee and lunch whilst out walking the dog, so they are combing the two.

I don't take my dog if I'm going to town for lunch (or town at all, for that matter) but if I was somewhere nice for a walk I'd check out where we could also eat, to make a day of it

Plenty of places don’t allow dogs. If you’re allergic, why not just go to those instead?

There aren't plenty of places tbh and certainly not accessible ones.

Dogcafedreamer · 07/02/2023 19:25

@MadameDe do you never do a long dog walk and end up with a pub lunch?

Springbreakwoohoo · 07/02/2023 19:26

Flinstones · 07/02/2023 18:21

The beach!! Another place people can't go without being attacked by other people's "it's just being friendly" dog!

Oh don’t be so ridiculous - I’ve never seen dogs leave bottles, glass, chicken bones, dirty nappies, used condoms or throw stones at seagulls. I’m at the beach everyday and the chaos caused by humans far outweighs any damage by dogs. In all my years I’ve never seen dogs attacking people on the beach either.

Because the lunch/trip to the pub is part of the dog walk. So, we'll go out on a Sunday and go for a long walk, then stop at the pub or a restaurant for lunch before we go home.

It's not like we go out just for the purpose of taking the dog with us for food.

TotteringByGenteely · 07/02/2023 19:28

I wish we had more dog friendly places in my area. Nothing better than a bit of dog watching over coffee and cake for a relaxed vibe.

Prescottdanni123 · 07/02/2023 19:44

Dogs peeing on the floor/on sofas/counters etc is not ok. Unfortunately, there are arseholes in every walk of life, therefore there are areshole dog owners. Likewise, I've known kids to pee/wet themselves in shops/cafes - parents apologised but they weren't the ones who cleaned it up. They stood back and let the staff do it. I've also see a mum let her kid scribble all over the tables with icing from those decorate your own gingerbreadman packs and leave it for the waitress to deal with. Or parents let their kids scream and run around, at the risk of tripping up staff carrying hot drinks.

I'll defend dogs being in cafes though because there is plenty of alternatives that don't take dogs. You don't have to use the dog friendly ones.

Unfortu

Herecomestreble1 · 07/02/2023 19:49

Taking my dogs to the pub stresses me out. We did it once and they weren't badly behaved, but I was in edge because they no doubt found it very boring!

Charmanderchick · 07/02/2023 19:53

Times a thousand. My son is the same and sometimes reacts even to hairs on clothes. We avoid dog friendly cafes but it’s getting more and more difficult with a local shopping centre welcoming dogs and them not even being banned from local playgrounds.
im guessing the people who suggest just taking antihistamines are the same who would eat peanuts on a plane.

vivainsomnia · 07/02/2023 19:55

It's horrible how callous people can be towards other people
Its nothing to do with this. I take my dog with nme a lot, and never come across someone allergic. That's because it is thankfully quite rare that it would affect someone so badly. I have a friend who is allergic but is OK for 1 hour with or without antihistamines as long as the dog is not right nect to her. I think that's the most common scenario.

if I entered a cafe with my dog, you and your son was already sitting and eating and you came to me, pleasantly, and politely explained that your son's allergy is so bad that he could have an asthma attack but you're there because it's a birthday party for instance, I would absolutely tell you that it was no worry and I'd go elsewhere.

If I was sitting there already and you entered giving me a very shirty look sneering at my dog, I'd feel differently.

CastlesByTheSea · 07/02/2023 20:03

Totally agree!! It’s ridiculous the amount of places that allow dogs in these days. I don’t think it’s right and would rather it not be allowed on the whole.

But it's down to the premises owners surely? It's not your thoughts that matter?

Dogcafedreamer · 07/02/2023 18:08

@lieselotte oh well that's life! You'll just have to go to the limited places.

It's the owners choice how they run their cafes etc, you can use those horrid sterile chain places like costa or Starbucks. They seem to be everywhere anyway.

@Dogcafedreamer

rather a sterile Costa then a place where dogs can sit on the chairs shedding their hairs and any remnants of shit from the fur on their arse (which does happen) I have had a dog, I know it happens sometimes especially for long haired breeds

Hmmm the shit that my dog stepped in wasn't dog shit. What with the fact it was 'covered' with shitty tissues
